Not this again. LOL. America isn't a melting pot. We need to know what these catch phrases mean and use them correctly. ;)

Haha! Get your appetites ready, everyone.

I thought that "melting pot" as a term went out of vogue a while ago.
I thought America was more of a mixed salad (not tossed salad, you dirty children) and that Canada is a cultural "mosaic".

Hm. Maybe parts are more like salad and parts are more like stew, just depending on how much interaction you've got. So America is like a soup & salad special :)

It's steak and potatoEs!!!!

What's funny, and the point I was making, is that all of these catch phrases and rhetoric are predictable and often misused. :D

Okay, so then let us clarify for those who may not know the difference. ;)

Melting pot - when everything gets mixed together and each element looses its unique quality. You really can not differentiate one component from the other.

Stew / salad / mosaic - when each component comes together, but they each retain their own unique quality.

So where does that leave people like Madonna - an Italian-American Catholic from Detroit, who during her early music career incorporated a lot of Soul and R&B sounds into her music, but then moves to England, tries to fake an English accent, and converts to Kabalah (?sp). Now is she a melting pot or a stew?:p

this thread has me hungry for some good comfort food of some sort. Soup. Stew. Fondue from the Melting Pot.

Madonna would still fit in the stew category, IMO. I view the "melting pot" idea as everyone's cultures become one culture - you wouldn't be able to pick out different parts someone has incorporated, etc. At its most extreme, in a melting pot America, everyone would speak General American English no accents, no one would identify with any cultural heritage other than just "American", everyone would have the same basic value system.

Stew is the grossest thing ever.

Neither. She's just confused.

When will America have the "crab cakes" analogy?

I looooove crab cakes. Especially Charleston crab cakes.
