Here's a few things I've learned and still hold on to...
1. Never do someone else’s hand signs, even if dissing, if necessary modify to appear similar, but NEVER put up someone’s hand signs.
Well, I know here in Alabama the Zigmas have a party hop where they diss everyone using their signs. No one thinks it's a big deal because it's HILARIOUS. Besides, our orgs are so much more than our hand signs. I don't want to see any man that isn't an Alpha throw up the Mighty "Phi" but I won't get bent out of shape over it.
2. Never, ever, ever touch another Greeks paraphernalia, even with permission.
I think paraphernalia was kind of loosely interpreted here. I can understand why a Kappa wouldn't want someone to touch his cane or why an Omega wouldn't want someone all up on his boots. There are certain things I have in my house that are on my bookshelf that I don't just et everyone touch. I think we all have certain things that are organizational relics that we don't want others to really play with.
3. When another organizations national/regional song is on, you do not stroll or obstruct them in any way.
That's a courtesy thing, forreal. Plenty of fights and misunderstandings have occured because someone got into the oncoming path of a massive organizational strut line. Here in Alabama everyone knows that when "Down For My Aggins" comes on you need to make it to the edge of the floor until we have made our desired path known. (It's typically in a circle anyway, so it's not a big deal.) Other orgs relegate themselves to other corners of the party. It's out of courtesy, and 90% of the time, it is returned.
4. Never argue with another Greek in public.
I agree. Nuff' said.
5. Never call a Sigma Gamma Rho a “Rho”, a Delta a “DST”, or an AKA an “AKah” (seen as very disrespectful where I’m from).
We have all sorts of nicknames for the sororities. Deltas=Reds, Elephants, DST's, Divas, etc./AKA's=Pinks, Frogs, K's, etc./Zetas=Zaters, White's, Z Phi's, etc./SGR=Rho's,Poodles, Lil' Bits, etc. They don't really seem to mind here.
6. Train only if you’re an Alpha, Hop only if you’re a Que, Shimmy only if you’re a Kappa, and Triple step only if you're a Sigma.
I agree with all except the triple step. I've seen all orgs triple step except for the Omegas.
7. Even if an unofficial bond exists, never refer to an AKA or Delta as “soror” (as far as KAPsi is concerned).
Agreed...occasionally.
8. Never wear more than one piece of pari.
I believe that wholeheartedly. I've seen cats with para on from head to toe and I thought they looked P.R.E.S.S.E.D. we know we're greek, let's not become walking billboards for our orgs.
