Heh. I had no idea Blue Moon was made by Coors. It's not my favorite beer in the world, but I do like it.

One of the local pizzerias just got a liquor license (beer & wine). They have a very limited selection, but they have Stella Artois, so I'm good :)

So turns out I have a solid liquor store in town; when I brought my order up to the register, the owner started telling me about the best breweries in the area. She also apologized for not having the Dogfish Head Pumpkin Ale in stock. Now that's an owner who knows her beer.

On another note, Dogfish Head Chicory Ale is AWESOME.

Aephialum, I hear you on the local pizza joints. The one closest to me only had Bud and Bud Light, but recently started serving Sam Adams. I'm a fan of this latest development (especially it's one of only two restaurants in town that serves alcohol).

Snow Goose is a well-balanced ale that's spicy (like most winter beers) and has hints of chocolate, caramel, and a little bit hoppy. I found a pretty good (albeit verbose) review here.

Oh, I also tried the Sam Adams Winter Lager from the tap not too long ago, and it was really really really good. I wasn't too impressed with it in the bottle but man, it is great on tap.

I'm pulling a Valkyrie and quoting myself here. I got my first Snow Goose six pack of the season on Saturday and it was AWESOME! I've been keeping an eye out for new winter beers at my regular store and unfortunately the selection isn't that great. Maybe the winter beers are still coming in?

Also, what's up with Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale? Any good? The packaging just looks so ugly to me and it turns me off so I've never tried it.

I'm pissed because the week after baby boy was born (still before Thanksgiving), I went to go get some pumpkin ale because I could finally have some, and the store had stopped carrying it for the year.

I'm not sure - I've tended to stay away from Sierra Nevada at times because it's a bit overpriced for the quality. It's good, but not among the top tier of beers.

In this area, the winter beers have been coming in since August. Maybe it's because Sam Adams and the local breweries come out with their brands early around here.

If I try it I'll post though. I'm going to be picking up a couple of six packs of something once exams are over.

Too lazy to look back over the thread, but I tried Magic Hat #9 over the weekend. It didn't really do anything for me.

Re Blue Moon, I drink it with a lemon, not an orange.

macallan25 12-12-2006 10:56 AM

........far better with an orange.

I've had it w/ both, and I just don't like the orange.

shinerbock 12-12-2006 11:35 AM

You two should get a room for your beer and fruit. Why don't you just trade it in for a grapefruit and stoli or something.

On a serious note, when I moved to Athens, anytime I ordered a bourbon and coke, it came with a lime. What the hell is with this? God I hate UGA.

#9 is the weakest of the Magic Hats, in my opinion. The limited time varieties are much better than their usual beers. Their holiday beer this season is awesome.

People serve bourbon and cokes come with lime around here all the time; that's why I usually just order bourbon on the rocks. No one dares to put a lime in that.

Edited because I apparently can't type in complete sentences...

shinerbock 12-12-2006 11:53 AM

You would think. I usually order knob creek and ice, and the other night the guy goes, "would you like a lime?" I don't understand what the deal is. Even if you get a well bourbon and coke at a bar in bham or atlanta, they don't ask if you want one. Florida is even worse, a bartender in Orlando didn't understand when we didn't want Canadian Mist after they ran out of Makers...apparently "its pretty much the same thing"...

Since they always put them in up here, I've just gotten used to asking them not to put the lime in when I order it.

It's funny, I don't mind fruit in my beer (like in a Harpoon UFO or a blueberry beer, etc.), but I don't want it in my bourbon or bourbon and coke.

Really? I think Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is the shit -- I always refer to it as our "default beer" -- it's yummy and I don't get sick of it.

I haven't had the celebration ale since last year, but I know I like it, so I say go for it.

In other news, there's a beer fest in Vail next month. We're trying to figure out if we should go -- they have some sweet hotel discounts, so it's probably worth it even though it's ski season. Also, I think I'm almost finished with my list of Colorado breweries -- there are 106. I actually made an Excel spreadsheet, LOL. BEER DORK.

It's not that it's necessarily bad; for some reason I've just always thought of it as a good, but not great, beer. Maybe it's because I haven't had it in a while. I'll have to pick up some this week and do another taste test.

That's awesome that there are so many breweries around you. Out east there are a few really good ones, but not as many as you would think.

The place I like around here is CitySteam. The Baghdad Black is awesome, and overall their stuff is solid. Plus, the prices are pretty reasonable, especially for beer of that quality.

I like Sierra Nevada, but its sort of a 2nd choice behind sweetwater for me.
