I went to see it (FINALLY!!) this weekend and I enjoyed it overall!
Jennifer Hudson was great! Loved her voice and acting, she was wonderful. I'm sure she'll get either a Golden Globe or Oscar nod. The only thing that didn't sit well with me was the ending! Did Curtis just have an epiphany and realized that was his daughter? What happened to the group after that? My friend and I were sitting there like, "WAIT, the credits are rolling!! Hold on!!" LOLWe both really wanted to see more closure. Other than that, great movie! |
An article re: the fashion/makeup featured in the movie
Supremely stylish 'Dreamgirls' evokes time that defined glamour for African-American women Samantha Thompson Smith, Staff Writer A scene in the new movie "Dreamgirls" took Judith Bell back: Beyonce's hair in a chignon with a dainty hat on top. "I used to wear my hair like that," she says. Raleigh's Lillian Thompson remembers wearing similar makeup -- heavy around the eyes. "We did thick liner to make your eyes look dark," she says. "Dreamgirls" might be a fictional tale loosely telling the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes, but for countless women raised on Motown who took style cues from the Supremes and other girl groups, the movie is a dazzling, true-to-life flashback to a golden era in fashion. "At that time, parents told you what you could wear and what you could not wear," says Esther Delany, 56, a Raleigh native who grew up watching the Supremes and the Shirelles. "The way they dressed at that time, they portrayed the norm. They were not outrageous. It was a proper kind of dress." Read more here: http://www.newsobserver.com/105/story/529973.html |

I really liked the movie. Just some observations:
Acting/Singing: -- JHud was clearly the stand out star. She held her own in every scene. -- Not that impressed with Jamie's singing, especially since he's a singer. -- Jimmy got soul....I'm too young to remember Eddie in his singing days. All I could thinking of was Donkey from the "Shrek" movies. It didn't help that they showed the preview for "Shrek 3" before the movie. -- Jimmy's character seemed like a combination of people, but I keep thinking David Ruffin from The Temptations. -- "Listen" is actually a good song in the context of the movie. But, because it was released as a lead single before the movie opened all people could see was another Bey song. (Someone said it up thread, but see is overexposed right now.) Behing the Scenes: -- Jennifer Holliday claims that the filmmakers used her voice on teaser trailers for a few months. -- Most of the original cast were upset that Jimmy's character used drugs in the movie. That wasn't apart of broadway musical. Other: -- I think the movie cost between $60-90 million. I'm sure they will make the money back. Most people went to see it to hear JHud sing. Since it was in limited release, I'm sure it did well $$$ per screen. Awards: -- JHud should win the Golden Globe, and hopefully will be nominated for an Oscar. -- I'd like to see Eddie nominated and win an Oscar. |

"My girl wants to party all the time, party all the time, party all the tii-ime.." ^^^^^ The only E. Murphy song I remember. You kinda have to be an ol' head to remember it. He didn't do too well with the singing thing. |
^^
I remember Boogie in Your Butt. At 40-something, I guess I qualify as an old head.:o |
I remember in 7th or 8th grade my neighbor use to be outside playing "Put Your Mouth on Me" ALL THE TIME... I saw the vid on YouTube a while back and it brought back good memories

I have FINALLY realized who the replacement for Effie was. I'm sitting here with Boston Public on, and she's the other AfAm teacher.
