Sure, 99% of us joined a group because of the quality of the local chapter. Few 18 year-olds think beyond what's right in front of them. To me, it was a terrific boon to later realize what an outstanding national organization I had joined. The benefits are many.

FYI:

Current #s for Chi Omega:

Over 300,000 initiated members
171 active collegiate chapters

(Both stats are #1 among NPCs)

You must be an undergrad. After college, your National org matters more. And since you spend 4-6 years as an undergrad and 30+ as an alum, your National should matter to you.

Agreed, when you first pledge, you are thinking (most likely) only of the local chapter.

After you become an alumni you hold your chapter dear, but even more so the national reputation, tradition and strength.

I don't have the exact figures with me right now, but I know we have 200+ active chapters with approx. 300 total charters issued since 1856 and 75+ alumni associations... NONE of which are in the Philippines! The total number of initiates as of right now is 281,345.

Also, sometimes undergraduades (or alumnae/i for that matter) from prestigious schools think that the individuals from their specific chapter are all more outstanding than the members of the national organization as a whole.

Some finally open their eyes eventually and are pleasantly surprised that there are indeed outstanding members from EVERY chapter!

Very true. Though I know that many undergraduates don't give a lot of thought to that. (I suppose I didn't at the time, but I was very fortunate to still end up in an organization that I'm very happy with on an International level.)

(Just realized that I've been an alumnae longer than I was an undergraduate member already. Hadn't thought of it in those terms before.)

How about another take on this thread. (I'll update this post with the replies, so don't quote my post in yours)

Where is your largest chapter:

Sigma Nu - 225ish at Ole Miss I think.
AGD - Auburn Chapter.
LXA -
Sig Ep - 175 at University of Oklahoma
KD - (Bama would be my guess)
Pike - (my guess would be FSU)
Gamma Phi Beta - Oklahoma, Auburn or USC (California).
DG -
DZ -
Kappa Sigma - (my guess would be U of Ark)
Phi Mu -
TKE -
Chi O -
KKG -
AOII - 1. Ole Miss, 2. Georgia, 3. Auburn, 4. Alabama (all 4 would be over 200)
ATO -
ZTA -
SAE -
KAT -
KA -
Beta -
DTD -

For AOII I would guess (from some slightly outdated stats) 1. Ole Miss, 2. Georgia, 3. Auburn, 4. Alabama (all 4 would be over 200)

Using some new member figures cited in this quarter's The Crescent, I'm going to guess that Gamma Phi Beta's biggest chapters are either Oklahoma, Auburn or USC (California), but any Gamma Phis know for sure? The Arizona chapter used to be huge too.

banditone 05-05-2007 07:16 PM

No one else knows their largest chapter size or location? Man, I always knew that junk when I was in school. Guess I'm just a curious George.

AGDee 05-05-2007 07:49 PM

Our Auburn chapter is our largest.
