My grandfather and his wife...married when he was 72 and she was 68. My father-in-law and his wife when she was 74 and he was 71 (religious only, not legal due to pension concerns!)

That is two without even having to dig for info.

How do Domestic Partner benefits fit in with this? I mean, we're talking about all the legal benefits and all that... don't domestic partner benefits cover all of that already?

The 100+ elderly men and women I worked with last year at this hospital didn't. I'm beating you by 80 and I didn't even have to dig for info. Honestly, put some thought into what you say.

I would just refer back to the Separate but Equal doctrine that we had in this country in the early part of the 20th century. Why didn't that work?

Also, DP benefits do cover, well, probably some of that already, but no one is really required to adhere to it. Like, a company can choose to give benefits to spouses but still exclude domestic partners. No DP at all get federal legal/tax coverage and it still doesn't cover random things (like a lot of car rental companies will only let another person drive without an extra charge if they are your spouse). So, even then it's Separate but Not Equal.

11,146 women over the age of 50 got married in Texas in 1999. Over 500 of those were over the age of 75. (I don't consider 50 a senior citizen but they are past child bearing age).

Approximately 900 grooms over the age of 50 were married in Nebraska in 2002.

These stats all seem to kept by state and I can't find (in the time I'm willing to put into this) stats for the whole country. But, senior citizens DO get married.

Domestic Partner benefits aren't offered by many employers. My company does offer same sex domestic partner insurance, but you have to pay full price (about $300 per pay period), where I could cover a spouse for free.

Lots of people got tired of benefits in 1997.

Marriages in 1997: 2,384,000
Divorces in 1997: 1,163,000

Senior citizen divorces in 2002: 2.5 million

And in your statistics it seems only 500 senior citizens out of however many marriages in texas get married...barely a drop in the pool.


Trees do fly...not many but some do I suppose.
