the POINT is that everyone believes stuff that they see on television - whether its a murder investigation on the news or a silly commercial that makes people ACTUALLY think they can lose 2 dress sizes in 48 hours by drinking "magic juice".
And my point was that even if you believe something at first, if you actually GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT later on, you'll realize that it isn't actually true. This isn't PBS or CNN or anybody with a smidgen of credibility. It's freakin' MTV. If someone is dumb enough to take a music video network's word as gospel, that's their problem, not yours.

Come on people, PNMs aren't as dumb and gullible as you're making them out to be. They know that "The Real World" is anything but. They know that MTV likes things with shock value. They know that the average student's life is mostly pretty boring. They know that MTV would not air a show about a group of people - ANY group of people - getting along and contributing to the community. MTV doesn't like shiny, happy, friendly stuff. They like slap fights and freak dancing.

The type of people who believe that this show is an accurate representation of ANYTHING probably think that "Animal House" is a documentary.

I don't think that this show is going to decimate recruitment numbers. The people who are going to use this show as proof of negative stereotypes are not the type of people who would want to rush.

I don't think it's fair to continuously tear Sigma AEPi apart. While, Many greeks are upset because of the way that MTV has portrayed Sigma, I think that everyone needs to keep in mind that Sigma is not representing your own personal organization. While yes, they are representing "sorority life", they are representing their OWN, "sorority life." No matter what organization MTV had filmed, the portrayal never could have, or would be intended to represent all greeks. Take into consideration the location and type of sorority that Sigma is, and that is who they represented. Even if MTV does a second season of sorority life, the next sorority will never be able to demonstate all of the ideals, beliefs and actions of every sorority across the country. EVERY sorority is different. I personally applaud Sigma for having the balls to take this one on. I don't think that they had any intention of insulting or demeaning the greek population.

This thread started while I was on vacation so I just want to thank MSSTCY1 for bringing it back up because I have spent the last half an hour reading these posts and LMAO!!! :D There were just too many good posts to quote, but this one goes the best with what I want to say...

And intelligent women never insult others for having dirty laundry, because they know full well that there will be some point in their lives when they'll have some too.
News Flash:
People talk about other people...Most people are natually catty...
How much do you want to bet that people who are saying it's wrong to bash SAEPi have, at one point or another, bashed a member of another organization or a chapter on their campus? It's the same thing folks, just on a larger scale. It's almost like bashing celebrities...they're used to it, they're not going to come knocking on your door because you insulted them. It's not about class, it's about entertainment value.

The quote that come to my mind is from Steel Magnolias:
"You know what they say: If you don't have something nice to say about someone, come sit next to me!" ;)

And when you say "they're not really Greek" - "their rush is stupid" - etc. etc. - do you realize how much that plays up to every "sorority girls are snobs" stereotype? And yes I say girls, because I've seen very little bashing from the guys on here.
I went to the sorority interest meeting, and one of the girls answering questions from us PNM's said, "they're just a local chapter. Local chapters aren't real sororities. They're just clubs playing greek." I wasn't impressed by that. Especially since we have a local at our school, and they are as close to each other as the girls in the NPC sororities, even if they are smaller. And, since these girls are brand new, they've had to do A LOT of work to get started, so deserve even more respect. I've talked to the girl one on one, and she is very sweet and down to earth, but that comment not only made me question her sincerity and snobbishness (is that a word?) but the attitudes of sorority women in general. It made me happy when she later apologized for the comment because she realized that it sounded as though she were looking on non-NPC groups.

I've developped a lot of respect for GLOs because of the threads I've read on here, and by seeing the way that women from different groups are usually very respectful and sweet to one another. I agree that these girls have put themselves in the public eye. Personally, I don't watch the show because as soon as I saw it advertised, I figured it would be an insult to any girls in sororities I know. And so it has, from what I hear. Most of us PNM's aren't naive - we know that it's edited, and we know that the majority of sorority women are nothing like the "edited" version of the girls in the show. What we are watching and paying attention to is your reaction to the show, and how differing opinions cause you to react to each other.

By the way, how sad is it that MTV is supposed to be entertainment, and yet their corporate mission statement states their mission is to "shape the opinions and political views of American young people"??

4 things....

1.Free site....Free opinions
2. Whether or not you feel that others opinions are correct or valid...they have the right to make them on whatever topic they please.
3. This show will and has reflected negatively on all of us.
4.No need to get your panties in a bunch....just accept this a mistake (By the Sigma's) and move on.

MTV is a network that has done LOTS in order to educate young people...reality series aside.

Their political documentaries (esp the ones from the 90s - I used to show them all the time when I taught high school) are phenomenal. Yes, they are very liberal, but these docs were made to get kids (people under 25) interested in political issues.

Guess what? It worked!

And you might be too young to remember, but MTV spearheaded the Rock The Vote - MotorVoter initiative, which really revolutionized voter registration policies all over the country.

my thoughts

its not the "dirty laundry" that i have a problem with.. everyone has that.. its the negative image of sororities that they portray with their attitudes and the way they treat their sisters

MTSUGURL 09-05-2002 10:31 AM

Good point KDonline... Actually, I'm old enough to remember the rock the vote thing. (showing my age...) Had forgotten about that. :)
