Okay, confession time. There were 2 PNMs at my school who dropped out of rush, and I'm convinced it was because of something stooopid that some of my sisters and I did.
It was my sophomore year, my first time on the other side (in my defense), and it was my local sorority's first time participating in FR (in our defense). XYZ fraternity had offered us an open invitation to come to dinner anytime during rush week; a couple of sisters were dating XYZs, and of course the brothers knew it's a good thing to fill your house with attractive girls during rush. ;) During round 1 of FR, we met two very sweet PNMs, I'll call them Buffy and Willow. They were a "package deal". They were both invited to return for round 2. After round 1 was over, we turned in our invitation list, cleaned up, set up for round 2, and then realized it was dinnertime. So a group of us decided to take XYZ up on their dinner invitation. We knew there might be PNMs there, and we knew we couldn't talk to them, but we went over to XYZ anyway. Naturally, who should show up but Buffy and Willow. At the time, we had extremely strict silence rules. We weren't allowed to talk to PNMs at all outside rush parties - even to explain to them that we couldn't talk to them. So we kept having to say to the XYZs things like, "Bob, would you do me a favor? Remind Buffy and Willow that we're not trying to be rude, but we aren't allowed to talk to them outside rush parties." We should have left... actually, we shouldn't have gone to XYZ in the first place. I'm pretty sure Buffy and Willow interpreted our not talking to them as us being stuck-up sorority snobs or something. In any case, they didn't come back to us for round 2, and wound up dropping out of FR. Later, we invited them to a COB rush event, and they turned us down. :( So we lost them because we followed the rules. :( Needless to say, by the following year we had a rule that no one was to go near a situation like that until after bid day! |
Going into recruitment, my choice was down to two. (We have deferred recruitment and only four sororities, so this wasn't really jumping the gun, too much.)
I ended up not joining the other one for quite a few reasons. 1. The girl that talked to me the first night just kept talking about how home school was better than public school... I went to public school and loved it, and didn't really care to talk about it. 2. On philanthropy night, we colored on plastic bags, while at all the other houses, we did really cool things. 3. There was a girl from my high school in that sorority that didn't even say hi to me the whole time 4. The girl that preffed me started crying (I didn't understand then that it is an emotional night) and it creeped me out. 5. When we walked in the room, they said, Sisters of XYZ, may we present to you PNM's full name. ..I wanted to turn around and walk out then! 6. The colors... I hated them. I rationalized and figured if I was weirded out that much by recruitment, I prolly would not like the sorority. |
I probably did the most stupidest thing in the history of rush. See, going into rush I was pretty sure I knew who I wanted...Sorority 1 (mainly because they had a house). Getting into rush, my friend (who rushed with me) and I decided we liked Sorority 2. I was pretty sure I didn't want Sorority 3 because I HATED their colors and we just didn't click. Well by the inivational parties (which i'm guessing is equivalent to pref parties) I had totally eliminated sorority 1 because they were just to "girly" for me. During my last invitational party at Sorority 2, I got stuck with one of the sorority sisters who's main focus was talking to one of her other sorority sisters. She totally ignored me, and I had to sit quietly at our corner table watching all the other PNMs having a good time. So I decided to drop them and pick sorority 3, the sorority I thought i'd never wind up in. My instinct was right, I didn't end up liking sorority 3.....and now i'm going back to rush the sororities with an OPEN MIND! LOL.

ROFL! I've been reading this thread off and on for a few days now. I wanted to spread the chuckles out over time. :)
Guess I'll add some more: - I dropped a house because it was a friend's sister's house. She was the most plastic, fake, self centered b**** I have ever met in my life. Since she'd graduated just 2 years earlier I assumed everybody in that chapter was like that. I later became friends with a couple of girls from that house and they told me that everyone hated her too. - Someone in my rush group kept going back to a house because (at that time) it was one of the only houses that was air conditioned. She had no intention of pledging them, just wanted a break from the heat. - A friend, who went to another campus, dropped a house because she said it had one of the ugliest living rooms she'd ever seen. Massive, ugly floral prints everywhere. The drapes, couches, throw pillows, even the carpet had flowers on them. She said it looked like the FTD man had thrown up in there. She couldn't imagine looking at that room every day for the next 4 years. Another case of bad judgement because she told me that the very next year they redecorated and it was absolutely beautiful. |
Okay, I'll confess!
I cut one house because the girl talking to me had THE YELLOWEST TEETH that I have ever seen in my life. I feel bad, but seriously they were like yellow from the crayon box. They made me uncomfortable and I couldn't stop staring at them. She was smiling nonstop and kept leaning forward. Oh my goodnes, I fled from that house. |
I thought I had posted on this thread already, but I just did a review and I found that I hadn't!
My decision was almost totally based on what the TKEs I was friends with (I was dating one seriously too). They had some friends in one chapter who were rushing me hard and I couldn't stand them and they were known as the "ugly" chapter, so they were out. Another chapter was very small and were referred to as "XYZ who?". The third chapter had a rep as "sluts". I didn't go any parties for the first two (recruitment was way different back then). I did go to the third one for first rounds, and to Alpha Gamma Delta. Not a soul spoke to me at #3. Not one sister! Now, the fraternity boys had said "The Alpha Gams are the stuck up ones. They're smart and they won't sleep with us". I loved the girls there as I was going through recruitment and was impressed with all the leadership roles they had on campus (our President was the President of student government, etc.). Anyway, I wanted to be the smart, stuck up, student leader who didn't sleep with every fraternity boy that showed interest, so I stuck with Alpha Gam for the rest of the time and did an ISP. I did find it humorous that #3 kept inviting me back to their parties, even to pref, when they couldn't have even known who I was since nobody spoke to me at the one round I went to! Later I realized I would have been happy with XYZ who? too, but I can't imagine being anything but an Alpha Gam now. We had one girl ISP us who was a legacy of another chapter. Legacies were VERY rare on our campus so it was a big deal. She purposely didn't want to be in the same chapter as her mom. She ended up being my sister-daughter. Dee |
I can honestly say I was totally biased when I started formal. My best friend at home was an AZD and I SSSOOOOO wanted to be one too. I was dead set on being an AZD. (And totally against being a TriSigma bc my roomate said they weren't the best).
So I went through rush and cut the sororities I thought seemed "dorky" and cut the ones I got ignored by bc I thought they were "bitchy". I ended up with AZD, ZTA, and SSS. And odd thing, I chose SSS!!! That's why I am SOOOO for formal rush, bc you can totally start with one thing in your head and you know in the end you ended up where you really belonged. I'm not a fan of purple or my three letters in a row (sometimes I like variety LOL), but I love my SORORITY as whole...my sisters more than anything. |

I dropped ZTA and ChiO because I thought that there were to many blonds. DZ wasn't for me, I really didn't like the way their house was decorated for Philanthropy Day.

A girl from my church said she's always wanted to be a Delta, but now she's pursuing AKA b/c she thinks the Deltas on her campus are ugly. She's legacy for AKA, so her mother's happy she changed her mind, but rest of us are just kind of like...

For example, I liked ADPi, Tri Delt, Gamma Phi, Kappa, A Phi, Theta, etc. You get my point. So every sorority on my campus can pretty much go by some kind of nickname like that, except for Sigma Kappa and Phi Mu. They just go by their names, which I didn't like. I wanted a cute nickname damnit! But luckily, I got over that weird thing and look at me now, proud to be a Phi Mu! Funny how those things work out. Just so you all know... before I read this site, I had never heard of "snakey K's" We call Sigma Kappa "Sigmas" but we don't have anyone else on campus with Sigma in their name. Phi Mu... well we don't have a nick name at all. |
I had some dumb reasons.
I cut Alpha Phi because I didn't like their suite (they redecorated the next year and now it's gorgeous!) and I didn't like one girl I talked to. I cut ZTA because "they all looked like teachers." (Yea, I don't know  ) I didn't like DG because one girl asked me where I summered, and I didn't understand the question. My response: "Dayton, OH." |
I cut SKEPi b/c I was intimidated by their hotness.
