How did this little nugget escape us, that an NPC sorority has been racially diverse (and more than just 1 token) since 2011? Congratulations to SDT for not parading out their members through all of this brouhaha saying "what about us? Look! We have black girls!" But SDT couldn't ask for better promotion. It makes them look really good both locally and as a national sorority. I could see a lot of out of staters giving them a second (or first) look. And my guess is SDT was never part of The Machine. Just a guess ;)

A lot of the stories about the whole mess have mentioned that fact.

This is amazing press for SDT! I would love to see this jump start their chapter!! Congrats to these great ladies!

I'm not so sure that they were "never" part of the Machine...but you might have to go back pretty far to when sororities first joined.

"Sigma Delta Tau accepted its first black member in spring 2011 as Courtney White was initiated into the sorority. To date, Sigma Delta Tau has initiated three black sisters, with one additional recruit who transferred before being officially initiated."
Whether or not this is how seem people define "diversity" is not based on having more than one. It is about the ratio of different cultural, racial, and ethnic groups. It is also about how people interact which includes not having to downplay or hide cultural, racial, and ethnic identities for the falsehood of "colorblindness." Plus, token doesn't mean there is only one. The good thing is SDT is a Jewish sorority and one of its founding purposes was in response to discrimination against Jewish women. I hope SDT maintains its Jewish foundation, not just in its founding and history but in its current and future culture and traditions. |
