There's also talk about the show doing what Pop Idol (its British predecessor) did -- cancellign. Cowell won't produce a show that doesn't pick talent. Like Pop Idol, he'll change it to X or whatever, and make it so just the judges vote, ensuring actual talented people win...

Sanjaya is beyond awful. I don't even find him endearing like other people do. Blah!

LeslieAGD 03-30-2007 09:46 PM

KD, they should make American Idol like the Grease show...
let the audience vote, but then have a "sing off" for the bottom two
and let the judges make the final choice each week.

Rock Star does that too... the audience votes, there's a bottom 3, and they have to each perform... then the judges (the band they're auditioning for) choose who goes and who stays. I think it's a great idea, and I don't know why AI doesn't do that.

Sister Havana 03-31-2007 06:05 PM

That is a good idea, especially since the judges don't actually have any judging to do once AI gets to the semifinals - all they do is give feedback.

It's not a completely foreign concept to 19E... they did this for So You Think You Can Dance? for the first 5 weeks or so and then switched to the audience only vote after all the crappy folks left.

I've never seen that show, but I still don't see why they don't do that for AI.

texas*princess 04-02-2007 09:34 PM

How exactly does the ranking go for 'Dancing w/ the Stars'? I'm not an avid watcher of the show, but it looks like it's a combination of judge votes & audience votes?

LeslieAGD 04-03-2007 09:37 PM

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but Sanjaya's sister works for Hooters...

Sorry, just had to quote myself and toot my own horn! :p ;)

Last night was pretty good - not as boring as last week, at least.

I didn't get why they were fawning all over Chris - I hated most of it, only liked the end. Blake has a decent voice, but he really doesn't have a lot of range or power, so I'm not sure why they love him so much, too. I thought Jordan's performance was really not that great, so, again, not sure why they loved it. Didn't like Melinda as much as I normally do and I still love LaKisha - even though I don't think she will win.

I think Phil or Hailey will go home.

ADqtPiMel 04-04-2007 07:37 PM

MMMMMMMMMMMM Blake.

I think Phil's shiny head's days are numbered.

smiley21 04-04-2007 08:04 PM

I love Blake too, especially when he sang "Don't Speak" and "Love Song". I was a little skeptical when I realized he was going to sing a No Doubt song, but he made his version sound so hot. I turned into a Blake fan. :)

I cannot comment on Sanjaya no matter how hard I try. Just plain yuck. Please send that train wreck home.

Yeah, but all the tweens are gonna vote for him trillions of times!

and he's safe again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! darnit little girls!

Sister Havana 04-04-2007 09:29 PM

WTF????

irishpipes 04-04-2007 09:43 PM

Very surprised tonight. Wow. Obviously America is deaf (but not blind).

pinkies up 04-04-2007 10:51 PM

Okay, this needs to be the LAST season of AI. Melinda, LaKisha or Jordin will be the winner unless AI does some quick "fixing" of the votes. This year's "talent" is garbage. Not a good show.

I totally agree. While Melinda, LaKisha or Jordin will most likely win and I think that they are amazing singers, they do not even come close to the past contestants.

AI needs to step it up on the talent next year, or I will stop watching.

AXO Alum 04-04-2007 11:47 PM

I like Melinda & Jordin - I am totally not into LaKisha at all. I think her "Diamonds are Forever" just grated on my nerves too much. The "talent" this year is lackluster at best.

SanJayJay is just making me sick. (But I still don't believe for one second that viewer "votes" actually count for anything other than stating the number of votes "cast" - I just don't think for one minute that the viewers have anything to do with it - besides, if they kicked SanJayJay off, it would REALLY become boring with no side bets on what the heck his hair will do next!!)

Sad but true. Scary isn't it?

_Opi_ 04-05-2007 12:22 PM

I don't know what the big deal with Sanjaya is. Sundace was worse, and I didn't see people making snide comments about his looks or voice then. Chris Sligh was also bad. He still made it to the top 10. Go figure. I'm also not a fan of Haley. She should be going home next week.

I'm loving Chris Richardson. If I voted for any contestant, I would vote for him.

Seriously?! Sundance had a great blues voice when he stuck with it. Chris Sligh was a vocal major in college and had a very good voice.

The issue isn't that Sanjaya is unnatractive (though some of us do think he's creepy looking), it's that he doesn't sing well. He should be auditioning for his high school musical, not be on American Idol. He has a decent voice, but it doesn't compare to many of the people who have already been voted off.

I've been watching the show since the beginning. Sundance's audition was great. I saw the potential as well. He just never brought it again. He still made it past Hollywood week. I was a little confused about that.

I don't know anything about Chris's vocal background. I'm just going by what I hear. He's alright. He was just not that great. I believe Simon said the same thing as well.

If I remember correctly, though, the judges thought Sanjaya had potential to be American Idol. They picked him for the top 20 out of thousands of people. I'm pretty sure they weren't thinking "high school musical" then. Otherwise, he would not have made it past hollywood week. I guess I'm just not understanding how everyone got on the let's hate on Sanjaya for the way America votes. I guess I feel kinda bad for him. Some of these comments are irrelevant to his vocal/stage performance i.e. "creepy" "weird" "freak" "making me sick."

Unregistered- 04-05-2007 03:41 PM

One has to wonder what Chris and Blake were thinking when they found out that they were grouped with Sanjaya?

Was it:

"Holy shit -- we're in the Bottom 3 because Sanjaya's finally getting the boot tonight!"

or

"Freaking A, we're saved because Sanjaya's got the teenyboppers' vote!"

Actually, I think that Simon and Randy (who cares what Paula says:p ) both said Chris was the best male singer - he just didn't choose the right songs and he had tempo/performance problems.

And while they did put Sanjaya through to the top 24, since his very first round there they have said he wasn't strong enough to continue - but America keeps getting screwing up the vote.

I also agree with Jen - I think he knows he should be going home, but that he's going to keep getting to stay and he's gotten a bit smug about it. Meanwhile, people like Stephanie and Gina, who want desperately to be there, are getting voted off. It's really turning people off I think (except the crazies who keep voting for him, obviously!!).

Is it really the teenyboppers who are keeping Sanjaya around? I thought he was simply the benefactor of the "underground-anti-Idol-vote-for-the-worst-singer" camp.

ΑΓΔSquirrel10 04-05-2007 05:31 PM

I'm now thinking that it's the producers trying to get ratings:confused:

I like to think it's a combination of both. I think there's NWIH the underground help could be doing it on their own.

I'm getting memories of John Stevens and how long he was able to stay in competition because of these kids.

Ditto. I loved Gina last year, and darn it if I wasn't pulling for her this time around. Thought she did a great job on her sing-out, although it was bittersweet.

PeppyGPhiB 04-06-2007 02:46 AM

I'm sure Sanjaya is getting votes from some teenage girls, but he's also getting votes from people who are tired of American Idol dictating everything on TV. The other networks won't schedule any of their priority shows against it, and since AI airs two, sometimes three, nights a week for MONTHS, good shows get pitted against each other on the remaining nights, with the ratings loser getting cancelled. I HATE that almost all of the shows I watch regularly have been moved over the past several years because of American Idol.

MTSUGURL 04-06-2007 08:23 AM

I kinda figured Gina was going home this week. Just doesn't seem fair... Pretty soon they're going to be left with 5 spectaculars and one, "Well, your hair sure is interesting..."
I can't decide if I'm a bigger Melinda fan or Jordin fan.

kdonline 04-06-2007 12:49 PM

NExt Wednesday will be Blake Lewis Day, in the Seattle suburb of Bothell, where he's from.

No word yet on a Sanjaya day - he's from another suburb, Federal Way, but I think he used to live in Bothell??

kansas13 04-06-2007 09:46 PM

Why did Gina have to go?! I really liked her and plus she's a Chicago girl and I always root for the Chicago contestants!! :) I am frustrated that Sanjaya isn't gone, but what frustrates me more is that he wasn't even in the BOTTOME THREE!!

texas*princess 04-10-2007 08:35 PM

I've decided that I dont think I like Haley. So much so that I might be bold enough to throw her in the same pile as Sanjuya. She's not the strongest singer - this week sucked. All she has is her short-shorts like Sanjuya with his hair.

tinydancer 04-10-2007 08:39 PM

I agree, t*p. Didn't help matters that I just hate that song she sang.
I guess the short-shorts helped draw attention away from her false eyelashes and red red lipstick.

Xylochick216 04-10-2007 08:55 PM

I've been waiting for Haley to go for weeks.

Watching Sanjaya is more painful each week, especially with the peach fuzz on his face. His vocals are horrid this week, too.

Blake impressed me this week.

ΑΓΔSquirrel10 04-10-2007 09:00 PM

Simon's comment about Haley had me cracking up!!! That is officially the coldest comment he has ever made!

And I just about threw up listening to Sanjaya. Why one earth did Simon say that "it wasn't that bad" ?!?

I'm guessing they're gona start saying he's good so people will start voting for a different worst.
