Hey R...

Go for it!

I thought it interesting that the first few YouTube comments didn't seem to realize that this show was on Broadway those many years ago...

I didn't go too far back in the comments, though.

Tinia...

Our son-in-law directed Godspell at a local theatre company a couple of years ago, and I thought you might be interested in some small parts of the review from the Denver Post threatre critic...

"Many a day-by- day ago, when I was a teen on the precipice of adulthood, I saw a joyous little musical that rocked me to my young, cynical core. Nothing in a theater - or in a church - has ever moved me in the same way as my first production of "Godspell...

...Surely someone, I thought, will understand that "Godspell" does not merely follow the gospel of St. Matthew...

...Someone will have a clue how to establish a satisfying initial context; how to find the right balance of reverence and playfulness, of joy and sobriety, of theology and secularism. And someone will know how to execute a finale that will leave its audience in search of a hammer with which to go out and build a beautiful city...

But then again, maybe "Godspell" is a real-life Brigadoon. Maybe it's only intended to reveal its true power every 100 years...

...It is clear from the top that (the director) has assembled a loving and lovable cast of talented youngsters to do his good works, ranging from the refreshingly forceful (actor) as the master, to the comic relief of (actor). The kind of chemistry they exude is only reached through outrageous luck or a brilliantly effective rehearsal process...

...Though the first act has its share of missed moments, the final 45 minutes are close to perfect. (our daughter's) "Turn Back O Man" perfectly marks the change in tone to older, more serious and more sexual. (Actor) understands that "By My Side" is a confusing amalgam of budding passion mixed with real fear. (Actor) and (actor) start the tears flowing early with "On the Willows" before two unexpected jolts: (Actor's) visceral crucifixion is the most bloody and effective I've ever seen, and (the directors) choice to follow the death scene with Stephen Schwartz's "Beautiful City" is, for lack of a more adequate word, beautiful...

When it was over, I was in shock that my search for the next great "Godspell" was over, but I mulled why I wasn't reaching for the hammer with which to build that beautiful city. Maybe that first "Godspell" was a miracle to me only because it found me at the right time, right place and most important, right age. Maybe I'm too old to feel quite that way again, but perhaps every production of "Godspell," great or flawed, is a small miracle for someone..."

Perhaps the reviewer is right. Maybe Godspell was in the right place at the right time for a very special generation.

Or maybe it takes a special director and cast.

I don't know.

Tinia2 08-05-2008 11:45 PM

wow. thanks for making and taking the time to share.
i think i can agree across the board.

I can't wait for the 9 to 5 musical with Alison Janney, Megan Hilty and Stephanie J. Block!

I'm also curious to see what happens with Shrek The Musical, especially the costumes and set. Has anyone else heard the songs that have come out? I especially like I Know Its Today but the others have yet to grow on me. The Seattle previews start next week I think.

Good question. I know son auditioned some time ago, so it's been cast, but I haven't heard anything more about it at all.

LoveMyKeyKKG 08-10-2008 03:14 PM

Brian D'Arcy James and Sutton Foster are Shrek and Fiona. He sounds just like Mike Myers in the songs I've heard!

piphiangel314 08-10-2008 10:20 PM

Ohhhh Sutton Foster. I adore her.

I hope this show does well and isn't a flop. It seems interesting, to say the least.

I just want to say that I am pumped for Equus! I'll be making a trip to NYC to see it.

LoveMyKeyKKG 08-12-2008 09:37 PM

Outta my way Elphaba, there's a new greenie on Broadway!

Thats just downright scary! Has broadway gotten that bad that they must turn Shrek into a musical or a play?:rolleyes:

BBelleADPi 09-06-2008 01:48 PM

I've been reading reviews of Shrek the Musical on Broadway World. They seem to be revamping it and making some good last minute changes. Has anyone seen it yet? I'm trying to decide whether to get tickets for it for our upcoming December trip.

moe.ron 09-07-2008 04:50 AM

I'm waiting for Apocalypto the Musical. Also The Passion of Christ the Musical.

piphiangel314 09-08-2008 01:08 AM

I really want to see Equus this Novemeber. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be able to. I'm very sad about this.

When "RENT," Broadway's landmark musical, marks the end of an era and closes its historic run, Sony Pictures Releasing's new special programming division The Hot Ticket will be there. For the first time ever, audiences across the country who are unable to attend a Broadway show will be able to see this once-in-a-lifetime event as The Hot Ticket presents the closing of "RENT" in select movie theaters with special limited engagement performances September 24th, 25th, 27th, and 28th.
I saw it tonight! Might see it again this weekend

srmom 01-19-2009 12:53 PM

I saw Spring Awakening (travelling Broadway cast) last night and LOVED it!!

Once I got over the heeby jeebies of the nude/sex scene ;) I cannot tell you how glad I am that I went to see this with a friend and not my son! lol

The music was AWESOME, I just bought the album on I-tunes.

minDyG 06-05-2009 03:32 PM

Audition help!

Bump! I need a Broadway song to sing for an audition in August. It's for It's A Wonderful Life: The Musical. I couldn't find anything else by the composer (Bruce Greer?), but the female songs seem to be in the soprano range, and with a bit of a 1940's/1950's vibe. My first thought was to do something from Anything Goes, but the best songs from that show are mezzo/alto. Any suggestions?

a.e.B.O.T. 06-05-2009 04:42 PM

Umm, I would recommend looking at The Simple Joys of Maidenhood, With a Song in my Heart, or You'll Never Walk Alone... they are all classic soprano solos... and seen as good audition pieces...

minDyG 06-07-2009 11:02 PM

I'm watching the Tonys right now! Billy Elliot just won Best Musical...but before that I was already rushing to post here how much I'm now DYING to see it after seeing the dance number in tonight's show. I saw the movie years ago and loved it. Has anybody seen the musical version?

AGDee 06-07-2009 11:53 PM

I'm dying to see Rock of Ages after watching the Tony's tonight.

a.e.B.O.T. 06-08-2009 12:56 AM

I was too excited about Rock of Ages after tonight, but Next to Normal is on my MUST see list now...

christiangirl 06-08-2009 10:33 AM

I've decided to go see Wicked on Bway for my birthday! I'm so excited. I had long ago decided not to go because, after seeing Idina Menzel sing "Defying Gravity" live, I just couldn't imagine someone else in the role. But a woman at my internship convinced me to go and I'm super geeked. :)

ETA: I just saw the Idina chat a couple pages back and I agree with all of the above! I traveled 4+ hours to see her TWICE. I had a blast both times and I'd so do it again. Her concerts are AWESOME to the nth degree!

Me too. I was pretty ho-hum about some of the performances tonight, and just Broadway this year in general (a lot of revivals and movies-turned-into-musicals), but that kid in the Billy Elliot number was amazing.

I saw Wicked the first time with Shoshana Bean as Elpheba and Meg Hilty as G(a)linda, and I can tell you there were people in the theatre that thought they were better than Idina/Kristin. Give others a chance.

PeppyGPhiB 06-09-2009 05:56 PM

I should also add that I thought the Hair performance on the Tonys was excellent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1GzYCsoVv4

swedishkd87 06-10-2009 09:12 PM

I also saw Megan Hilty & Shoshana Bean in Wicked and they were both incredible! The second time I saw it with Eden Espinoza and Megan and again, incredible! :)

AlphaFrog 06-27-2009 07:27 AM

This just may be Broadway blasphemy, but I really don't like Shoshana Bean's voice. I just watched a youtube of her singing "I'd Give it All For You" (one of my very favorite songs) with Jason Robert Brown, and I actually liked him better, even though he's not a very strong singer. But, hey, when you can write music like JRB, you don't NEED to be a strong singer to be amazing!!!

DeltAlum 07-28-2009 11:56 PM

I haven't posted or moderated anything here in almost a year, but have lurked every couple of weeks, and saw some posts on this forum a while ago, so thought I'd add this. You don't have to tell anyone else I was here.

Had a great weekend in New York visiting with the son. Not a lot to report on him, (doing a lot of regional work, and auditioning a lot and has a couple of good prospects, but it's tough in this economy) but we did see three shows in two days.

"Rock of Ages" was really fun. Not being of an 80's rock fan, I wasn't looking for too much, but it was very good. Great voices and some pretty funny stuff. I liked it a lot.

I was really excited about seeing "Hair" (being a child of the 60's), but while it was good, I wasn't all that happy with it. Good voices, etc., but I guess after seeing it originally in the early 70's, I expected the same excitement. Maybe it's just that we aren't in the middle of Vietnam, The Civil Rights Movement, etc. The stuff on the Tony's this year was good. The understudy for Claude, who worked with the son in regional theatre came up to say hello at intermission, which was fun.

The best part of the weekend (theatre-wise) was seeing "In The Heights." Again, not being much of a rap fan, I was not expecting much. It was outstanding! Best thing I've seen in quite a while. Again, one of the chorus members and understudies who worked with the son in regional came out to see us, and a couple of his friends from OU happened to be at the same performance, so that was fun, too. I'd highly recommend the show. It's no wonder it won the Tony last year.

I bought "the cheap seats" online for Hair, did the lottery for Rock of Ages, and some slightly obstructed seats for In the Heights (after not being selected in the lottery), so saw all three for just over $100 for each of us.

Seeing "Osage County" next weekend here in Denver.

SydneyK 07-29-2009 08:27 AM

Glad to see you back, DA!

I've got tickets for "In The Heights" in Atlanta this November, so I'm excited to hear that you recommend it so highly. When it comes to shows, I always pay attention to what you, AlphaFrog, and MysticCat have to say. I'll be sure to report back after I've seen it!

Ahem. Would that be Ohio, Oglethorpe or Oklahoma?

Sorry, couldn't resist. :p

All of the above, TS. Don't want to be specific. Trying to protect the innocent.

Thanks for the kind words, Sydney -- but I'm not really "back," just checking in on a few threads every now and then, and still getting a few private messages. Hope you enjoy the show.

Take care, everyone.

Thanks, but I doubt that a lot of the other moderators would concur.

Back in a month or so. Well, probably.

I was just surfing through you tube and I found the sweetest video from The View. A little girl with CF was on and Rosie surprised her with the cast of Rent. Here's the link...

DeltAlum 10-26-2009 12:47 PM

Back for my quarterly (or so) visit. Not much happening on this thread since the last time I was here.

We're excited because the son was cast out of NY for Jospeh....Dreamcoat at a local Equity house for the Holiday season, so he'll be here from November 2 thru January 2.

Unless...

He also just had a third callback for the national tour of A Chorus Line, in which case he would take that instead. He's been that far in the casting process for this show before for tours and Broadway, and the casting agency really likes him, so we'll keep our fingers crossed. Situations, like someone coming off a different tour of the same show can throw a monkey wrench in the casting process.

Oldest daughter and husband just saw Next to Normal in NY and are raving about it. They also saw In The Heights and liked the former better, so it must be pretty good since I really liked In The Heights.

Hope you're all doing well.

AGDee 10-26-2009 03:37 PM

That's exciting news! Best of luck to him! It sounds like a win either way for him.

I won't be seeing anything for a while now. After a year of Rent, Wicked, Spamalot and Phantom (thanks to a co-worker who had season tickets and got first option for many shows), I'm broke and all my money is going to tuition now anyway. It seemed like we got a slew of really good shows all in one year. I would have also liked to see Chorus Line and Jersey Boys, but funds ran out. I could have foregone Phantom, but my daughter was dying to see it because she never has.

it sounds like you get the exact same shows we get here in Indy! I wish I could see Spring Awakening, but the closest it came was Cincy... I am going to see Chorus Line.

Spring Awakening is really good. Right up there among my favorites.

Thanks for the kind words.
