Sandra Day O'Connor is a Theta.

Two more fun Kappas to add:

Laurie Hickson-Smith--Designer for Trading Spaces (The Key did a really nice article on her last year).

Anne Barge--up and coming Wedding Gown Designer (hers was the gown that was chosen on the last GMA or Today show throws a wedding (I don't remember which show for sure)).

It's interesting to see how many "well I heard..." and urban legends there are out there about GLO affiliation.

Have any of y'all ever read the book or see the website www.savekaryn.com? She's in a sorority, but I don't know which one. I emailed her to ask, though!

Don't know which one she belongs to, but I read somewhere that a movie depicting her "struggles" will be out in 2005.

And for those who wondered how she looked like, here she is (from the Smoking Gun):

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/graphics/art2/bosnak1.jpg

Edited to add: Columbia College of Chicago lists her as a 1996 graduate. Don't know if that was for undergrad or grad work.

Her full name is Karyn Bosnak. Can anyone do a search? There isn't an ADPi chapter at Columbia College (to my knowledge).

pinkyphimu 12-31-2003 01:52 PM

i recently heard a rumor that barbra bush was an alum initiate to pi phi. supposedly this was fairly recent- within the past 5 years or so. anyone know if it is true?

From what I could find, there isn't any mention of Greek life of any kind of Columbia College of Chicago.

I just checked, too (not that I don't believe you!). I'm thinking that maybe she was a transfer student?

You know, I've heard that several times too. But I'm not sure if I buy it

A) Because why wouldn't she go for Theta like her daughter-in-law and granddaughters?

B) She's not listed on our website

So I think it's just a rumor...

DGqueen17 01-03-2004 09:19 PM

I read the Save Karyn book and in it she claims to have pledged a sorority with a friend but they both decided they didn't want to be in it after all.

kayla0deegee 01-04-2004 02:11 AM

how about Conan O'Brien??? Was he is a frat?

AOII*Azra-elle 01-05-2004 12:54 AM

AOII has me--that is whenever I make it to the Olympics for figure skating! *haha*

kayla0deegee 01-05-2004 01:07 AM

ok one more...what about Shania Twain..i seen her on tv with a Delta Chi hat on...sweetheart???? Also was she in a sorority?

AXWhoah 01-05-2004 01:24 AM

I am fairly certain that Shania Twain didn't even go to college, I'm not sure she even graduated high school...

RACooper 01-05-2004 11:22 AM

No Shania Twain did not go to university, so it is extremely unlikely she's in a sorority (unless she's a honourary somewhere?)

honeychile 01-05-2004 02:46 PM

There were some Delta Zetas on "The Price Is Right" today....

IvySpice 01-05-2004 02:54 PM

Conan O'Brien went to Harvard and was president of the Lampoon twice (an unheard-of honor). While there may have been an underground chapter or two at Harvard in the 80's, it would be pretty bizarre by campus standards for a Poonster to be involved; they have their own social activities.

Munchkin03 01-05-2004 03:29 PM

Oh my gosh...

...next thing you know, someone will come on saying Jessica Simpson is Greek. :p

Don't you have to be literate to join a sorority? :p

i thought she was. i can't remember which group i heard it was, but i think their mascot was a chicken...or was it tuna. i forget,

Munchkin03 01-05-2004 06:11 PM

I think it was the plata-ma-pus. Or the buffalo. It's hard to keep all these sororities straight.

Tippiechick 01-05-2004 07:23 PM

The Shania Twain Delta Chi hat in question was an ArmaniExchange hat... A/X

George Eads (Nick from CSI) is an alumni of Texas Tech, and is a Phi Delt.:)

honeychile 01-07-2004 09:25 PM

I'm completely stunned and amazed that no one has checked to see if the former Mr. Britney Spears is in a fraternity at Southeastern Louisiana State University!

Any GreekChatters from there? Here's the link.

I just found out a couple of days ago surfing the Tridelta web page that Molly Sims is a famous Tridelt from Vanderbilt. I guess they just added her a little while ago. I thought that was pretty cool!

I read an interview with Molly Sims in Allure a few months ago. She seems really down to earth and sweet. Great representation for a great sorority! :)

My GPhiB gals would know for sure, but according to their official website, she is not listed as a prominent Gamma Phi Beta.

Phamous Phi Mu's

Regarding the "honorary" status of Julia Roberts. This is just a "Phi Mu" Urban Legend. She was not made an honorary member. In the movie "Steel Magnolia", she wears blush and bashful in her wedding, and the composite seen over her shoulder in the "bon voyage" scene with Sally Field is a indeed Phi Mu composite. That is it, rats. Quick we need to get her nominated for sisterhood!!!

Regarding Jackie Kennedy Onassis. This too is a myth. It recently was discussed on another communication venue, and our national historian could find no record of her "pledging" so she contacted the Kennedy Library for further clarification. The response was "no Ms. Kennedy Onassis never joined any GLO".

We have a number of strong women who achieve daily. I think the great ones are the ones that represent our creed in their daily lives...as giving, caring human beings. :)

Oh yes...Phi Mu has me :)!

sageofages 02-27-2004 07:57 PM

Other famous GLO Members

I noticed early in the thread someone commented how ridiculous that it was the pope was a member of a fraternity.

Phi Kappa Theta counts among its members many Catholic leaders as it was originally founded as a catholic fraternity. As such, the Pope is considered a member of Phi Kappa Theta.

That would be AWESOME, but I can't imagine having time to both competitively skate and go to formals and whatnot, all whilst at Stanford (isn't that where she went? I think I saw that she did, and had like a 4.0 or something!)... I hope it is true, though! She is one of my favorite skaters of all time.

opaldragon 02-27-2004 08:18 PM

Famous and/or notable Alpha Xi Delta alumnae

Kim Webster - actress on "The West Wing"
Jane Henson - co-creator of the Muppets
Lynda Carter - 1970s Wonder Woman
Betsey Johnson - fashion designer
Jan Davis - NASA astronaut

And that's all I can remember right now.

dakareng 02-27-2004 09:27 PM

I can confirm that yes, Barbara Bush (the wive of the first Pres Bush) is indeed a proud member of Pi Beta Phi. She was an AI a year ago and is a member of our Houston Alumnae Club, the originators of our current nationwide Literacy project (literacy is one of our major philanthropic efforts, also a major interest of Mrs. Bush).

Last I saw on Tv I believe she was attending UCLA. Someone from UCLA may know if that is true or not.
