I think part of it is nutrition, meaning, we have better nutrition so we look healthier. But, it's more than that. They have totally different facial structures and such.

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that over the past 50 years or so, parents are more likely than they were in the past to marry outside their ethnicity. Think of historical physical traits of different ethnicities - for example, if someone's parents are both 100% Italian, their children may bear strong Italian features (Roman nose, olive skin, etc.). Many native Americans tend to have distinct facial features and hair (prominent cheek bones, very dark hair).

Perhaps having more than one ethnicity in your heritage changes the way people look. If you are old enough, think back to when you could possibly identify someone's heritage by looking at them. The stereotypes still exist, but not as much. We must be very careful not to judge people on their assumed heritage. It's getting better, but it still exists.

Additionally, years ago, it wasn't necessarily proper to marry outside your ethnicity. Even in the 70s and early 80s, I remember ethnic issues going on at our church, which for many years was primarily Irish. Then the Italians moved into the area, and it caused quite a stir. Then Portuguese immigrants moved into the area, and the Church started having one mass a weekend in Portuguese.

Anyway, it's just my opinion based on my personal experiences.

I hear ya - my grandmother got a lot of flack from her parents for marrying someone whose family was Swiss (and from the German region of Switzerland at that). My parents got a lot of flack from their parents (both) because my mom's dad was Irish Protestant (read: English family that lived in Ireland) and my dad's mom was Irish Catholic. After meeting and getting to know each other, though, they melded pretty well into one big happy American family.

My brother "looks" very German, however. And I "look" very Irish.

In fact, we don't really look that much like each other at all - you would think my SIL and I are actually sisters and he married in - if you didn't see how much he looks like my dad (who looks like his dad, who looked like his dad, etc).

/hijack (on my part, at least)

I was looking at some of my cousin's pictures from the mid to late 90s when she was an active with Chi Omega. I can not believe how much things changed in the six years between when she joined and when I joined - but some of the pictures are pretty funny as far as wardrobe. The hair was curly with the curled under bangs and tons of plaid school-girl type skirts. I'm so glad I went through after 2000, where it seems like the fashion is a little simpler (of course we went from spending an hour curling our hair to spending an hour straightening our hair every day).

I can't wait until I can look at my pictures and think "WTF was I thinking with THAT outfit?!?!"

This is from Derby Days (note the hats, and Sigma Chi banner in the background), maybe like 1973? Not sure how reliable the dates on the photos are, though. My mom's boyfriend was Sigma Chi, so she has a lot of photos of Sigma Chi stuff. This brother is apparently in drag...

I'm guessing the brother is a pledge. A lot of Derby Days included a "Dec-A-Pledge" contest where each sorority was "assigned" a pledge to "decorate" to match some sort of theme. The chapter with the best "decorated" pledge got points and the pledge usually got some sort of "award" within the Sig chapter. Like not having to do House duty for a month.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...byDaysdrag.jpg

I find this hilarious. Even his nails are painted!
(I guess it really is 73, evidenced by the derby in the background)

Seeing the baby bottle makes me think this might be a contest where the pledge has to chug-a-lug. And often, instead of milk, it would be beer. If he wins, the sorority he represents gets points and he gets some "award".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...bydaysline.jpg

More Derby Days. I LOVE seeing all the letter jerseys together! They're a little hard to see on here, but on the original, I can make out Sigma Chi, AOII, KD, and ADPi.

I'm kind of partial to the short shorts.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../AOIIdecor.jpg

I'm guessing this is before a football game. Too bad we can't read the banner! The platinum blonde Gator chick on the swing over the door kills me. The date on the back of this says 1977.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...AOIIdecor2.jpg

On the left it says "98 lb. weakling," with what appears to be an emaciated tiger...I guess they were playing LSU or Auburn. I think the banner said something about "...in the ring..." so I'm guessing there's a Gator and Tiger off to the left battling it out in the ring.
ETA: or maybe it's a wildcat for Kentucky?

No way that cat is a Wildcat. He would be blue!

I look back on some of my pics from when I was a new member (2004), and I ALREADY ask that sometimes (espcially with date party outfits and stuff I wore to mixers).

a few years later than tangelo's mom was at uf, one of the events at fsu sigma chi derby day required each sorority to dress up their sweetheart-most often in a costume related to their theme. the year my sorority was crowned derby day champs, 8 of my sisters worked for several weeks constructing a realistic oscar the grouch costume for our sweetheart. except that it was made of orange fake fur, it looked exactly like the real thing, complete with trash can. our poor sweetheart almost got heat stroke, it was so hot during derby field day. it was a little too realistic, because the sigma chi brothers who were on the judges committee did not believe that the girls had made the costume, so we were only awarded 3rd place in that event. if only they could have seen all the remnants of orange fur we were still picking out of the carpets weeks after! good times, good times.

1984 Rose Formal

The girl in the maroon dress made all of our dresses. I'm not sure what cracks me up more: The satin material or that we were all wearing long gloves.

Love the plastic belts. We sure didn't have a hair shortage in the 80s and no one needed extensions. Just a lot of Mousse!

Farmville, Virginia - 1901

I was lucky enough to get a copy of a 1901 yearbook from the State Female Normal School of Farmville, Virginia. Kappa Delta, Tri Sigma and Zeta Tau Alpha were in their infancy. Alpha Sigma Alpha would be founded about 6 months later. I looked through the entire yearbook for the future founders of ASA but found none. Keep your eye out for a founder or two of the others.

For those who are familiar with "Chi" which is still very active at Longwood University, it's interesting to note the first members:

Lastly, I think this photo of the "Basket Ball Team" is adorable. About half the team are members of the sororities.

Those are so cool. Thanks Leslie!

I love that it has our old badge design and colors in it. Some people don't know that our colors and badge haven't always been what they are today.

Sidenote: That cheer is still in use by some collegiate chapters :)

Thanks Leslie Anne. One note----look at all the hair styles in all the pictures. All basically the same. Only one stands out---front and center in the ZTA picture (and she is a member of the BB Team). I know of two women that have this same hairstyle today! 2009!!

UofISigKap 02-03-2009 09:42 PM

I was curious, and I don't know if anyone could tell me, but the Lucy T.C. Stubbs of Tri Sigma...was the current sorority dorm at Longwood named after her?

You know, after reading those cheers, my own sorority's cheer makes a lot more sense. Whenever we sing it, lots of people say, "whaaaaaaaa?" but it appears that a lot of the "nonsense" rhyming was popular.

University of Miami - 1955

Hi,

I have lurked here for over a year, but never posted before because I was initiated in 1970 and don't really think that my experience is relevant now.

However, in a Retro picture thread such as this one, things are different. And since SWTXBelle, who has a really great sig, has bumped this and asked for more pictures while she fights with her scanner, I am posting some old yearbook pictures that I have from the University of Miami, Florida and my fraternity - Tau Kappa Epsilon.

These are from 1955 and I'll make several posts to separate them. First will be TKE and then one each for the sororities of the Little Sisters from my era. Yes, we had Little Sisters. Many of the houses did and most were sorority women.

UofM-TKE, those are great pictures. I need to get my hands on some of my dad's pictures. He pledged TKE at Wayne State University in Detroit in 1954 or 55.

SWTX: My Initiation dress was a white Gunne Sax. I have searched and searched for my pictures from my initiation and haven't found them yet. Someday they will show up. I was initiated in 1984 :)

University of Miami - 1955

Tropical_Dancer,

One of my best friends at Miami was an АΔΠ. I'll post some 1970's pics later with her in them. We used to hang out at the main Greek spot called the Varsity Inn, which was at Lejuene and Dixie. We all had beautiful paddles on the wall. By the time that I left Miami, the VI was a Pizza Hut.

FSUZeta,

By the time that I got to Miami, the white dinner jackets were long gone. The hippies wore bell bottoms, we wore jeans or gym shorts and when we were feeling hippie, we wore striped bells. The Phi Delts who ran the VI, set the style. We looked good.

AGDee,

I found these pictures on the Internet. Pics from that era are hit and miss. Hope your dad has his. Getting old pics from my brothers and Little Sisters is literally like pulling teeth. They all want to look, but no one wants to scan.
