I'm not a Palin fan, so I'm cheering for her to not hurt McCain, not to further her political future.

BUT

She held her own. Neither person answered any of the questions tonight really, but that's okay because Ifill was kind of annoying, she kept interjecting herself where she wasn't needed. No big gaffes on either side, except talking about same sex couples Biden accidentally said that they would work to protect the rights of those in gay marriages (he clearly meant relationships based on the context and misspoke, everyone I was watching with, all Democrats aside from me, heard it and cringed). That one will be in an ad probably, but aside from Joe describing Bosnians as "Bosniaks" (which is apparently right, but I've always heard them referred to as Bosnians in the US) that was the only "what!?!" moment I heard from either side. No home runs in this one either (probably somewhere close to a tie, Palin started far stronger, Biden finished strong), but that's fine because very few people are basing their votes on how the VPs convinced them. McCain may gain a little because Palin held her own and thus looks less incompetent than she has recently and may reassure some people. But my overall opinion is that that debate was probably pretty damn close to meaningless in the race.

I'll concede it won't necessarily cause a huge swing to either side, but I wouldn't call it "meaningless". I think it's important we get a look at who the #2s on the tickets are, particularly since one of them has basically been kept in a shroud for the better part of her candidacy. Biden saying Bosniacs was no worse than Palin calling the General in Afghanistan by the wrong name. Palin did flat out not answer several questions, though, and was a bit of a one-note Nellie. She was so controlled so as to not make gaffes, she had absolutely no depth or breadth to her answers. And I don't know who coached her to do that cutesy, "Aw, come on now, Joe" stuff, but good lord was that annoying. It felt like she was in the interview section of a pageant most of the time, the constant fake smiling, the goofy winks and folksy Fargo-like talk, it was just too over-the-top. One heartbeat away. Seriously. Bone-chillingly terrifying, that prospect. I always thought of Biden as kind of a quirky guy and wasn't prone to take him as a serious VP prospect, but his performance tonight actually gave me a great sense of confidence.

Because you were already supporting Obama/Biden and expected Joe to win. To be honest, so did I, and I was pleasantly surprised that in my opinion it came out somewhere close to a tie. Time graded both of them as a B and I would tend to agree. She avoided specifics, but did it without coming across as just not answering. There were a number of cases where both of them either answered the question which was asked of the other or didn't answer the question at all - and I think at least part of that was Ifill's fault. Why was she, say, asking a question of Biden, then asking a different question of Palin before Biden had responded, so Joe had to talk and then Palin had to talk about a (at times completely) different question that was asked 5 minutes before and not repeated without having the chance to respond to Biden? Ifill did that both ways and it made no sense to me, just seemed like a pointless structure. The odd thing to me was the way the different sections came out. Palin outdid Biden on foreign policy (the entire reason he is the VP) while Biden won on energy and tax cuts (the two big Republican campaign platforms). Certainly didn't see that coming. Biden "out-facted" Palin, but using too many facts and statistics makes you harder to follow at times (which he sometimes was, particularly early in the debate). He seemed more knowledgable, but also kind of dispassionate. He seemed almost sad rather than angry at times when angry seemed like the correct emotion. Palin was impressive because I think the main reason people tuned in was to see her flop. She didn't and fought a 36 year Senate veteran to something at least pretty close to a tie and I think that may tilt the scales a little in her favor tonight simply because of how low the expectations were.

But in the end, people are going to remember this debate for about 48 hours. Palin seems like less of an irresponsible choice than she did before the debate, and if that lets her get back on the trail on the attack it could chage the race, but the debate itself isn't going to change many minds at all.

You and I were watching two different debates, my friend.

Yes, not in terms of policy, in terms of debating. He let her flat out call him wrong on a number of things without responding.

I.E. the "waving a white flag in Iraq" line and her response about what a troop surge in Afghanistan would entail and how wonderful it would be.

Most people don't tune into a debate to judge how wonderful the ideas are, they aren't knowledgeable enough to make that decision. And when you let your opponent flat out call you wrong or do something as bold as calling your Iraq policy surrender without responding to it, it comes across as you conceding the point. Biden certainly "out-facted" her through the entire debate, but he needed to give a short response and then make his own criticism instead of just shaking his head and letting them move on to the next question. The strict partisans already have an opinion on who "is right" and that's the person they will think won an issue. But to people who don't already have a strong opinion, when your opponent gives a strong criticism and you can't or don't respond to it at all, you just lost that point.

That's wasn't Bristol holding the baby tonight, that was Willow. Come to think of it...I haven't seen Bristol lately. Hmmm :rolleyes:. Willow is a few years younger than Bristol...13 or 14 years old. They look so much alike, it's scary.

Willow is the pretty one looking at her mother! Piper, the youngest daughter is soo adorable. If you have ever seen her on the campaign trail, you'd notice how she looks up to her mother as if she was God! Too cute!
