Thanks Christiangirl. THat is EXACTLY what I wanted to know! I knew there was an interesting story behind it, I wish they had EXPLAINED that. It was so annoying to sit there and have it seem so important and then have it mean nothing at all!

I don't like that they switched out Lavender. Black girls can kiss gingers too. (My boyfriend was born with red hair!)
ETA: On second thought I'm glad they changed her ethnicity.

Someone may have already said this, but: why did Ginny hide the textbook? That's when Harry found the diadem. I feel like this is a crucial thing to have changed.

Also, does anyone else think that it was a big mistake to leave Dobby out of the 4th, 5th, and 6th movies? He's kind of a big deal in Deathly Hallows and he has only made an appearance in the 2nd movie. How difficult would it have been for Dobby to give Harry the gillyweed in Goblet of Fire, find the Room of Requirement in Order of the Phoenix, and make some kind of cameo in Half Blood Prince?

Something else that popped in my head too and maybe it will be explained more in the next movie (don't know if anyoen made mention of this) but remember: the Horcruxes had significant meaning and they weren't just things and I cant remember if they got into it in this book or not but it's not really explained fully why Voldemort needed 7 of them.

Something special about the number 7, I believe. Dobby was expensive and not really essential to the story. Kind of like how they swiched Cho and the chick from Slytherin in the last film.

I'm sure they'll do flashbacks from the 2nd movie to remind viewers of the character.

I feel like he is essential to the story, just not in those books. I'm sure they'll figure something out. Perhaps the fact the he saves them from Malfoy manor will seem a sufficient reason to mourn his death to the extent Harry does. I'm interested to see how they address the diadem. Maybe Ginny will remember seeing it.

That's right..I don't think they explained that he made so many because 7 is the most powerful number in magic and he felt making 7 would ensure immortality. DD said it in the book, but I can't remember if he said it in the movie.

Oh well, looks like I'll have to go see it again! :D

lyrelyre, good point about the diadem. There are so many more examples I can think of that they NEEDED to put in this movie because of the role they play in the next... Not sure if these are spoiler alerts or not (maybe for the books but probably not the movie), but just in case...

Ok, HOW HOW HOW could they leave out the prophecy!?!?!?! Seriously, the whole POINT of the entire second half of the Order of the Phoenix movie was based on the death eaters trying to get it, and Harry's visions, the ministry break-in, the big battle, Sirius's death, etc. so that they couldn't get it. And now the non-reading audience doesn't have "neither can live while the other survives" in their heads. WTF. I also think it gives Voldemort a motive for trying to kill infant Harry, motive for creating the horcruxes, and also brings dear, dear Neville (who I love and was disappointed by his non-existent role in this film) into the story line a bit more, and also sets up his (Neville's) killing of Nagini in Deathly Hallows.


Why was the scene in the Pensieve where Dumbledore shows Harry the Gaunt's house and explains the ring, Riddle's lineage, his murdering of his parents excluded? I think it is crucial to the plot as well as the development of the depth of Voldemort's evil, and quite foolish to leave it out.


And the ring. did. not. have. the Deathly Hallows mark on it! HOW could the ring be so lame? It's supposed to be this large disc with a crack in it, with the DH symbol on it. Seriously. How hard is it to make the ring the same as in the story? Instead they had some wimpy-ass little thing. And now, for the next movies, they will somehow have to make up for this oversight in not making it legit. How can you change something that is related to the title of the next book/film? Did the screenwriters even read the books?!


These are the three main things I can't believe were excluded to put in an extraneous scene of the Burrow burning. I hope my frustration comes through in this post. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the film. Honestly.

I'll probably wait for the DVD. Potter movies are always DVD waits for me.

That was really big for the 5th one though, not so much for the 6th. Flashbacks to 5 could take care of this. I agree with the rest.

That got me, too, but I have to presume it would have been a huge special effects effort to pull off everything regarding the Gaunts and Riddles. They've always gone into special effects before, but it seems they're cutting back more and more. Maybe they'll pull out all the stops for Deathly Hallows I & II.

I also have to agree with most of what you said...except enjoying the movie. It was just cool and going through the HP motions to get to HP & the DH. *sigh*

Well, I finally got a chance to see it. What a let-down.

I really thought that I had read/seen enough about the liberties taken and changes made from the book that I was prepared, but I wasn't. There were some good and well-done parts, but they really mangled the overall story.

I think I am now dreading Deathly Hallows I and II.

Now this I'm looking forward to -- loved seeing the trailer before HBP. I think I've mentioned them before at GC, but the Percy Jackson series (recently completed with book 5) is awesome. My 11-year-old likes it better than Harry Potter -- it really got him interested in Greek mythology. His copies of the fourth and fifth books are signed by Rick Riordan, the author, who came to a local bookstore.

For my money, I'm hooked on any book/series where the first chapter is entitled "I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher."

And I really like this background (borrowed from The Wiki, but edited a little to match what Riordan said when we heard him): Development for both The Lightning Thief and the Percy Jackson series as a whole commenced when Riordan, a teacher and author of several adult mysteries, first began making stories for his son Haley, who had recently been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. His son had been studying Greek mythology in second grade and requested that his father tell him myths at bedtimes. Riordan had taught Greek mythology in middle school for many years and was able to remember enough stories to please his son. Eventually he ran out of myths and his son then requested that he "make one up." So, Riordan created the fictional character Percy Jackson and made the story of how he would travel across The United States to recover Zeus's lightning bolt. Riordan gave Percy ADHD and dyslexia, like his son. (It seems both traits are common among half-bloods (demi-gods) -- ADHD because of the need to be ready to fight a battle and dyslexia because the brain is working simultaneously in English and ancient Greek.) The bedtime stories turned into the books.

I highly recommend these books.

I think the plan is to go all out for DH 1 and 2. Percy Jackson looks very interesting... lol
