Yes, DD has a variety of doughnuts, but so does KK. And for all their variety, there aren't any DDs that taste good. Cake doughnuts in general, and DDs in particular, aren't worth the calories or the money to me. They're too dry. That's why the coffee has to be so good -- you need it to get the doughnut down. |
Best.Donuts.Ever:
http://www.elriobakery.com/index.html They go so fast there's not even a decent photo of them in the slideshow! They are indescribable; drenched in glaze, rich, light, and melt in your mouth. Where are my car keys? |

If you are from Texas, Shipley's is the best, the donuts melt in your mouth! |
Son and I just returned from the 10th annual Krispy Kreme Challenge. Around 8000 participants, 5 miles, $200,000 for NC Children's Hospital, and almost 100,000 Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.
Ain't nobody running (or walking) 5 miles on a February morning to get Dunkin' Donuts. Just sayin'. |

Like many on this thread, I am a devoted fan of DD coffee and make it at home every day. I grew up with Krispy Kreme and that *used* to be my hands-down fave, until... I discovered a little local shop here in Phoenix called Rainbow Donuts. Not only do they have amazing doughnuts in all the expected flavors, they also make a couple of specialty flavors topped with chopped bacon. And (be still my beating heart!) they are the only shop I've ever seen who makes kolaches just like I came to love in central Texas. The clerk explained that their head-baker used to live in Texas, where almost all of the independent doughnut shops make them. Rainbow Donuts attracts displaced Texans coming from all over Arizona to get them.
And if that's not enough for them to win the GreekChat donut battle, one of the reviewers on yelp said this: Quote:

Ginger, I found a local shop called "Young Donuts" and they cannot be beat for cake donuts. But El Rio Bakery is still the best. One of these days the Tucson GCers need to meet the Phoenix GCers midway, in Casa Grande, for a donut taste test.

Voodoo donuts, hands down

Maybe I'll make a trip there this weekend... |

To me, all of KK's donuts look and basically taste the same. And again, I can't stand that they just taste like pure sugar. I get through half of one and I'm done. To each their own, I guess! |

But all kidding aside, yes, it's certainly a case of to each is or her own. As has been said many times, to some degree it boils down to whether one prefers cake doughnuts or yeast doughnuts. I love yeast doughnuts while cake doughnuts don't do a thing for me at all. I eat one and then think "Why did I waste money and calories on that?" |

As long as they don't change their coffee to taste more like Starbucks, I don't care! :p It is actually interesting when you think about it - DDs now makes coffee, donuts, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, hash browns, muffins, chicken and other deli sandwiches, etc. KK mainly focuses on donuts. ETA: I also love the fact that DDs has K-cups :D |
Bump for National Donut Day. Thanks, ASTalumna06.
I shall ignore the fact that ASTalumna06 was the last poster in this thread and she's posting about DD instead of KK. How dare she. |
