What rule of etiquette am I breaking if I do this? Where does a stylist get the idea that she's entitled to a lifetime commitment from me because she cut my hair once?

I was floored by the tip cup at the DD drive-thru window the other day.

We don't have Dunkin Donuts here, so that one took me a minute.

I always feel really bad when there's a tipping cup, because I rarely carry cash on me, and if I do, it's a few dollars and that's for coffee or something. I don't like throwing the left over change in the cup, because I just think that's kind of an insult. For tipping at a restaurant, I give really good tips.

Most of the pizza places I use state that the delivery service is NOT paid to the driver, I understand this, as I know a smallish place whose owner says up front that he has to pay x amount extra to keep a delivery man on at lunch hours. Rain/Snow = higher tip.

But when all the takeout person has done is bag my order, I'm not really wild about a tip. I'll give a token one, but unless you've offered me something to drink while I've waited, or taken one of your seats, I'm not very happy about it. After all, I can remember when fast food places based their wages on your getting a tip!

Oh, you thought it was the DD boobie drive-thru? Sounds like a place k_s would frequent. ;) "I have your order as one Double D cup feel-up. Would you like to super-size your order for only $10 more? No? Ok, your total is $20, please pull around."

"Oh, it's you, again k_s?" $50, pull around."

I always tip 20%.

I tip other people too (all spa stuff, etc.)

I would never not tip, I just don't really get it. Wouldn't most managers say part of the job is great service?

You guys know people in Asia don't tip right?

As for me, it depends on how big the bill is and how good the service is.

At the bar I work at, its really annoying and insulting when someone who orders a togo order doesnt tip at LEAST 10%, ESPECIALLY if I poured you a drink or got you water while you waited for it to be cooked!!

This thread is long, and what I'm gonna say was probably said somewhere in here, but as a server I ask for you to get off your high horse and tip what you want to tip, regardless of whether or not a gratuity was added. The manager can remove it if you seriously don't want it. If the server was good enough, add more. There's nothing more pleasing, as a server, than when someone says "You did such a good job, I'm willing to add more than what your company says you deserved."

Regarding this, while I don't work To Go, I can say that (at least at Olive Garden) the To Go Specialist does do a lot of work. The only real difference between what he/she doesn't do for you that servers do is fill your drink and grate your cheese. The To Go Specialist does everything the same, just in a shorter amount of time. You may not want to tip the 20% I hope you like to tip, but they definitely do a fair amount of work that earns some sort of tip

Umm, not really. I used to put together food for people that called in to-go orders while I was bartending at the same time (the sports bar where I tended also served decent food). Got everything ready for them (other than cooking the food myself), they paid me, etc. I didn't do everything the same, just as the "To Go Specialist" doesn't. They don't check back on the people, refill drinks, make sure the food was okay, clear the table properly, etc.
