Another perspective on Janet ...

Ladies -

I wanted to share a thought (a rant, actually) I had on this topic.

Dorothy Dandridge
Hattie McDaniel
Dianne Carroll
Lena Horne
Cicely Tyson

... keep adding names.

All these women caught hell -- took demeaning roles -- dealt with all kinds of Entertainment Industry B.S. -- paid all kinds of dues and suffered all kinds of indignities -- to pave the way for Janet Jackson to have the opportunity to perform on (what was arguably) the world's biggest stage.

And how does she honor that legacy?

By allowing herself to be groped and ultimately exposed onstage. (And make no mistake, nobody is going to expose Miss Jackson's breast unless she gives the go-ahead!)

And don't fool yourself -- a whole lot of folks are saying, "What's the big deal -- it's only a BREAST!" Consider what would have happened if Bobby Brown had exposed Britney Spears' breast? You know and I know that Bob would have been damn near arrested before the 3rd quarter started and they would STILL be trying to figure out something to charge him with.

I am less concerned about a bare breast on television than I am about the message the whole performace sent. Nearly every one of you ladies here has, at one time or another, been devalued by someone because you are a Black woman. And here is a Black woman who allowed herself to be devalued on international television. That's what my Grandmother used to call "common" behavior.

We have a hard enough time fighting negative stereotypes in the media as it is -- and Janet couldn't find any other way to entertain but to act like a stereotypical "Black Hot-Momma?"

Don't get me wrong - I love sex, sexy women, and breassesses - but I also belive that we need to respect ourselves if we expect to get respect from others. There's a way to do everything and some things are simply not done. Like selling your self-respect.

Like Chris Rock said ...

"You want me to stop calling you bit*h and h*? Then stop dressing like one."

I agree with much of what you say IotaNet, but I think people's reaction to this is just a sympton of our lack of moral conscience these days. The things that SHOULD outrage us, don't. The things that should NOT outrage us do. For example people were ready to march in the streets because Ludacris gets pulled from Pepsi (i agree with that by the way) or something along those lines. We're so easy to get riled up by superficial issues. WE AS A COMMUNITY DO NOT SEE the constant chipping away at family values and the issues that are really causing the demise of our community. We see things like baring a breast on TV, or two women kissing, or saying more and more curse words as pushing the envelope or Not a big deal....Some people may not consciously say that..but that's what our actions show.. Don't we see that OUR children are CONSTANTLY emulating what they hear in songs and what they see on TV?? Everything from the dress, to the speech, to the disrespect for authority..

I just hope we don't wake up to late when are kids are too far gone..

Disney replace Janet Jackson-inspired statue

I guess entertainers will think twice now before trying to shock the world on primetime TV
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.ananova.com/entertainment...sm_880395.html

Disney has removed a statue of Mickey Mouse inspired by Janet Jackson, following her Super Bowl gaffe.

The singer was one of a host of celebrities asked to help design and personalise a 6ft statue to mark the cartoon character's 75th birthday last year.

Disney spokesman, Gary Foster, told the Orlando Sentinel the Jackson version saw Mickey wearing a tight black outfit similar to the one the singer wore on tour in 1990 after the release of her Rhythm Nation album.

The statues were erected in front of the Florida Magic Kingdom and are now being moved to Philadelphia to greet shareholders at Disney's annual meeting, before going on a nationwide tour.

But the Jackson version will not be tagging along and has now been replaced by a spare statue created by an in-house designer at Disney.

Foster said: "Considering all the controversy it [the Super Bowl performance] drew, we talked it over for a couple of days and decided it would be best to replace hers with a new one."

I fully agree that what Janet did was in very bad taste and hopefully it will spark a movement to clean up television (btw - if you want to help with the movement, please go to afa.net ).

However, I find it HIGHLY suspicious that Disney would pull this statue out of concern for the controversy surrounding the Super Bowl, especially considering that every year, Walt Disney World sponsors "Gay Day" (www.gayday.com) at their Orlando theme park  (yep, that sounds like a company that cares about the moral fiber of our society to me :o ). So if anyone plans on going to Walt Disney World Resort please check the park's calendar. You and your family may get more than you bargained for!

In my earlier rant, I invoked the name of Lena Horne. That makes the following news story (from CNN.COM on February 24, 2004) so much more ironic and satisfying to me:
Quote:

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Janet Jackson has been left out in the rain after "Stormy Weather" singer Lena Horne balked at having the younger star play her in a planned television movie.

The 86-year-old Horne reportedly is angry about Jackson's breast-baring stunt at Super Bowl and pressured ABC to drop Jackson from the project, the trade newspaper Variety reported Tuesday.

ABC executives resisted Horne's demand, but Jackson representatives told the trade newspaper that she left willingly after Horne and her daughter, Gail Lumet Buckley, asked that she not take part.

Good for Ms. Horne! Being a Lady and having Class never goes out of style!

Jackson Says Halftime Show Was Accident
1 hour, 6 minutes ago Add Entertainment - AP to My Yahoo!

NEW YORK - Echoing her on-stage partner, Janet Jackson (news) says her breast exposure during the Super Bowl halftime show was a "costume accident."

Slideshow: Janet Jackson Controversy

"It was not intentional. It was a costume accident," Jackson tells Ebony magazine for its April issue in her first interview since the now-infamous Feb. 1 performance.

"It was an accident," she says. "That was basically it."

Timberlake has said that when he reached for Jackson's top, exposing her right breast covered only in a sun-shaped nipple shield, it was a "wardrobe malfunction."

In the article, Jackson also discusses her boyfriend of the past year and a half, record producer Jermaine Dupri, about whom she's been reticent in the past.

"Things are great with us," the 37-year-old singer says. "I'm sorry, but I get so tickled when you say his name. It's so funny because I've never been in a relationship when my friends adore him and my family just loves him. It's a first me for me.

"But more importantly," she added, "I love him. Everything is great."

Jackson is headed back to network television on April 10 as the host and musical guest of "Saturday Night Live," NBC announced.

Forget surfing the Web for screen shots of Janet Jackson's infamous nipple slip--now you can own a piece of Boobgate history.

E! Online Photo

Currently up for sale on eBay--plastic replicas of Jackson and Justin Timberlake in all their Super Bowl finery.

In an effort to capitalize on the controversy surrounding the wardrobe malfunction that rocked the nation, Canadian artist Siobhan Sawatsky, 24, created the Barbie and Ken-proportioned pair and put them up for online auction.

Though Sawatsky admits she did not actually watch the Super Bowl, she was meticulous with her creations, down to Jackson's sun-shaped nipple shield and Timberlake's beard stubble.

"The dolls actually took only a couple of evenings to create," Sawatsky told E! Online via email. "However, if I had known they were going to create such a hype, I would have spent more time on them and paid more attention to detail."

Sawatsky has created other leather-clad dolls in the past and sold them on eBay for between $30 and $80. One of her earlier creations is a Playboy Bunny doll, complete with bunny tattoo on its shoulder blade; another doll wears bondage attire, complete with a cone-shaped bra reminiscent of '80s era Madonna (news - web sites).

"I really only began making the dolls because they were fun to create and sold for relatively good money," she explained.

As for her take on the fallout from Jackson's slip of the boob, Sawatsky says she found the frenzied reaction amusing.

"I have to admit that the whole incident was quite humorous," she said. "It is amazing how something so minor can be blown completely out of proportion and become such a national event."

Bidding on Sawatsky's shapely synthetic duo starts at $49.99. So far, there are no bids on the dolls, but the end of the auction is still several days away.

Other Janet and Justin-themed merchandise available for purchase on eBay includes photos of the nipple-baring moment of truth and newspapers and magazines reporting the event.

None of it appears to be selling well, perhaps because photos and footage of the event are still so widely available for free on the Internet.

Meanwhile, Jackson is returning to television April 12 as the host and musical guest for Saturday Night Live. It will be her first live gig since the Super Bowl.

We wonder what the theme of her opening monologue will be.

NFL Cancels Opening-Game Kickoff Concert

NFL Cancels Opening-Game Kickoff Concert
(AP, 03/09/2004 3:28 PM)

The NFL canceled plans for a third opening-game kickoff concert following Janet Jackson 's risque halftime show at the Super Bowl.

The league held free downtown concerts before its season-opening Thursday night games the last two seasons, but NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday that commissioner Paul Tagliabue put an end to the concerts.

Tagliabue informed the owners of the decision on Feb. 12, less than two weeks after Justin Timberlake tore off part of Jackson's costume, exposing her right breast.

Tagliabue was incensed at the action, which generated outrage throughout the country and from Congress.

Two years ago, the NFL had its first Thursday night opening game in New York, and Jon Bon Jovi headlined a concert in Times Square that afternoon. Last year, the opener was in Washington, and more than 100,000 people came out in the rain for a concert featuring Britney Spears , Aerosmith and Aretha Franklin .

Aiello said there might be a different sort of event to coincide with the game, including musical entertainment. Neither the site of the game nor the participants have been determined.

"No decisions have been made on any events other than the commissioner telling the ownership on Feb. 12 we will not have a concert," he said.

So the whole industry is being punished, still, for the idiocy of 2 people. That's cool.
