I figured it out once I came on here, but boy, I had a hard time coming to that realization. :p
Haha, I had never heard of locals either! Not until I joined GC, actually.

learning all 26 NPC sororities is a part of the Tri Sigma new member period. Inside our NM book is four pages with the name, year and college of founding, colors, jewels, flowers and a picture of the badge of every NPC organization. It's really helpful and interesting, plus a good reference tool if you ever have a question.

My two cents on the original topic (forgive me if this has been said before it's a long thread): As a member of a "smaller" NPC, I understand why our national organization has to be so judicious in where they colonize. They have to choose locations which are going to be successful, and it is not always the campus panhellenic turning down smaller orgs, but the orgs themselves deciding that a new chapter wouldn't be competitive at that particular campus. Many times an org may choose to only colonize at smaller schools because they know that's where they'll do well. Does that make sense? I hope it doesn't come off like i know everything that goes on with the extension process or that other arguments aren't equally correct. This is just my input

the basic info about all the sororities (letters, colors, founding school/date) were in our new member book as well, but we never really learned anything... they were just kinda like "yeah, there's other sororities..." and moved onto to the next topic.

I don't expect all NPC sisters to know all of the information about all the other NPC sororities, just know the names of all the NPCs.

tld, it is not a stupid questlon!!:)

It does seem at times to get WOW! But depending on what Your Campi is like, normally Greeks do so much more for Campi and The Alums of any Chapter will donate money to the school or work with The Local Chapter more so than an indipendent!:D

Same here...I don't think I ever looked at it though until after I was initiated....but I wish we would've gone a little more into the different organizations and learned a little more about them to foster that Panhellenic Spirit that should be seen around the world....what one organization does for the world through philanthropy and other goodwill attempts is a positive step for Greek life as a whole

All of the NPC information was in our pledge manual as well. We did not spend a lot of time on it as I recall, but I was one of the goofball nerds that read the thing from cover to cover and learned about NPC and at least learned about the different orgs. out there besides the ones on my campus.

I think it is fun to learn about the different GLOs and where they are located across the country. That's one of the things I love about GC - even though we're not face to face, I always learn something about other GLOs and HBGLO's as well that I didn't know before.

And while we're in the Panhellinic spirit, check out this fun web page: http://www.npcwomen.org/about/badgeposter.pdf

I love looking at all the badges!

We didnt go over it in our pledge program but I also read everything I ever got from the sorority so I picked up some knowledge about other sororities.

Also, Phi Sig is colonizing at the University of Minnesota- Duluth. The chapter, Iota Zeta, I believe, will be installed in Jan. 04.

That is AWESOME! My best friend from high school attends UM-D and ever since I joined AGD (and wouldn't shut up about it, lol) she has said that she'd want to join a inter/national sorority as well, but I think up until now they have only had locals and Gamma Sigma Sigma, a service sorority.

Very cool :) Congrats to Phi Sig and their baby chapter!
