Somebody correct me if that's wrong. |
you can get around that with dialup and proxies.

DA, no, that is where you are in error, I beleive! You cannot block a whole ISP!
He has banned certain people, uf_pike for an example. But this bad pee"ney who keeps showing back up on site under a different name!:( Many as a matter of fact!:( But, thanks to the many Sharp People and the stupidity of the poster, He/She/they are found out very quickly and reported. John, is truely the only one to Ban posters. While Mods do see these people most are wary of recommendation of banning to John. Usually the reasons are very obvious as they become total Asses.:o As you will learn the Hard way, if it gets out of hand on the Thread you are a Mod on, You can Block/Lock, delete or recommend that they be Banned. With The site that you are on, it do get hairy so can only suggest taht you confer with your fellow Mods before a decision is made!:) Rudey, that is why some people who have been banned return, it is because of different log on names. See? But, John can check out the ISP to see if it is the same Moron!:D John aint heavy, He is My Leader! |
OK I don't know if this applies to me, but I can't log onto greek chat through my internet explorer but I can through my AOL. I connect through ethernet. Another person that goes to school with me can't log onto GC either and we both use the same email server, etc. to receive updates when people respond to the threads we've subscribed to and to log onto GC. So, does that mean we were both banned?

I haven't called the Internet people as of yet. The reason why is because if you go to the computing centers around campus you can log onto GC. It's the weirdest thing. I didn't think I'd offended somebody to get banned. I might have ruffled some feathers but everybody's gets ruffled every once and a while. I don't know. I am really not a computer guru or junkie so I don't really know how to fix the problem. :-)

if you were banned, you wouldn't be able to post right now.
John only bans usernames, to my knowledge he has not ever banned an IP or ISP. |
OK just wondering! :D I guess I better call Internet Tech support at my school!

thats pretty common knowledge. if you're trying to say i do that...i dont. thx gui |
I think another reason John doesn't ban IP addresses is because it is possible to falsify them or generate fake ones. Some friends of mine lived in a house together and wanted to hook all their computers up to the cable hookup w/o paying extra (it was like 5 guys, so those 4 extra lines would have been pricey). Somehow one of them made fake IP addresses so that it appeared the other four guys were on their own hookup and not all hooked up to one connection via a hub. I don't know how to do any of that, but I'm sure many people do.

AXJules... I'm not sure vernacular means what you think it does.
No Rudey, KSig RC & Damasa, I did not know that. No doubt you'd all fit neatly into the gifted class in Malcolm in the Middle, well good for you - I don't feel particularly embarassed about that gap in my knowledge of genetics  . I did not 'get' your little quip and I don't have a problem with that because I do not use the plight of disabled people for humor. ImtheChamp & Swissmiss; yeah, you guys are spot on. I didn't mention those points before but now someone else has it's cool. With a dialup the IP address changes slightly each time leaving you with the option only of banning an IP block (which could include legitimate users); likewise IP address spoofing is possible which means you come up as on a totally different address. Public proxies aren't that much use since while they'll hide your IP... a lot of boards just get a list of all the public proxy IPs and ban them all at once. I still say a board administrator holds a lot more cards in his hand than a problem user and can make life pretty hard for them ;). |

I don't have to state that because it is obvious that you are. |
