Dad's side of the family is Scottish and French. Mom's side is mostly French (Normandie-Bretagne) with Danish roots way back and a bit of East Prussian. Dad's family left Scotland to settle in France for several generations where they did rather well but were forced to leave by the revolution of 1789. They came to Boston and branched out to Philadelphia, New York, and St. Louis. Mom's family is interesting in that they served in the American Revolution with the French Army, returned to France then had to leave due to the French Revolution, came to Philadelphia, went to New Orleans, went back to France after the 1861-65 unpleasantness, and eventually returned to New Orleans. My St Louis Grandfather met and married my New Orleans Grandmother during WWII. Dad married another New Orleanian (Mom) after he returned from Viet Nam. I think we have started a tradition of marrying Southern Belles from New Orleans so I have to watch my step whenever I get down there to visit my cousins. This tradition might be broken soon as my sister has an English victim, er, I mean boyfriend, and my brother seems to be getting serious about an English girl he met in school and dated all through college.

Mom's side: Italian and Irish
Dad's side: French and German |
Mom: born on the Island of St. Michael, of the Azores, Portugal. She came to America in 1965. Both of her parents were Portuguese as well.
Dad: French Canadian. Both sets of his grandparents came down from Canada. I want to say that I've posted it before, but what I think is fun is the story of how his family got to Canada from France. My uncle discovered it a few years ago when he was researching our families history as a gift to my grandfather... Back in medieval/feudal times the latest generation of the family consisted of 2 twin brothers and their families. I don't remember details, but one brother ended up killing an important town official. He was killed and his family was banished from the country. They ended up going to Canada, and the letter "X" was tacked on to their last name so that from then on all would know who was related to the "evil twin." Yay for having an "X" at the end of my name. |
Mine is almost easy -
I'm first(ish) generation american soil on my father's side Mother - mostly german, my mother's side of the family immigrated on the same boat as william penn and settled a few parts of pennsylvania before moving south Father - all italian! my grandfather and grandmother, great uncle and great aunt immigrated right after/slightly before he was born from Milan. I've still got family there! I'm a little interested to see what cashmoney comes up with on this one...heh heh ;) marissa |
I'm first generation Canadian. Both my parents are from Hong Kong by way of south eastern China (mostly, anyway). My grandmother on my mom's side grew up in the then Portuguese colony of Macau (aka The Vegas of Asia), but her dad was an orphan. Otherwise, I'm mostly southern Chinese (although I have one or two ancestors from the north/Beijing area). No known southeast Asian or European blood, but you never know.

Well my adoptive family (dad's side) is very Czechoslavakian. My last name actually means, "little rabbit" in Czech. They emigrated to the Nebraska area in the 1800s with many other Czechs.
My mom (adopted) side is all over the place. Irish, Cherokee Indian, you name it. They're mutts. :p As for my biological family, we only know about my mother's side, which is VERY Italian (and I look it). The last name is one of those super-Italian ones, but I haven't found out what it is yet. We think my biological father was Irish, but that's only because he had red hair. |
Alrighty then....
Okay I'm a 5th/7th generation Canadian (mom's side/dad's side). On my Mom's side (mostly Anglican): - English (military family that settled in Canada following Crimean War). - Swiss (came to Canada following Franco-Prussian War, not sure why). - German (a number of "waves", after Franco-Prussian War, after WWI, and WWII). On my Dad's side (mostly Catholic): - Scottish (came over to Virginia after failed Jacobite Uprising, most of family moved to Perth, Ont. during the Amercian Revolution). - English (came over to put down as my granfather put it "the American Rebellion", after settled in Perth). - French (little hazy, older family that married into family around time of American Revolution, quite possibly originally from New France). Basically I always explain it as anything north and west of Switzerland. PS> The different branches of the family have remained pretty close, and over the generations some 4th and 5th cousins have married ;). PPS>> One interesting thing: during WW2 one of my great uncles was wounded and catpured when Cyprus was overrun by the Germans. When he arrived at the POW camp, his name was recognized by the Commandt, and spent a week in the Commmandt's personal care, before being transfered to another POW camp because of a conflict of interests.... my uncle was married to the Commandt's favourite niece. My family has ended fighting each other in two world wars, and has made for some interesting family get togethers or reunions. |
