My good friend is #48 on the list for OoP - she got on the list right after the last one came out. I said "Just think - there are 47 people sicker than you" j/k
Anyway, when the book comes out on Saturday, she will be on vacation - so I am going to pick up her book (and get to read it) and she is going to get one when she gets to Flagstaff. I'm sure I'M going to get a lot done this weekend!!;) |
I like # 2 the best, but #1 isn't so bad...:)
Edited to add: I looked through all the covers (I like the German ones, too!) and noticed that although I picked up the first three paperbacks while studying abroad in England, I have the Canadian covers for books 1 and 2 and the British Commenwealth cover for number 3...what's with that? |
CP, you are so funny!
Is there any reason why they put the authors' name as "Joanne K. Rowling" on the German books instead of J.K. Rowling? I think Harry looks a little evil on the German covers. The French ones look so old fashioned! I wonder why each country has such different cover styles. Is it a matter of each country hiring a different artist to do the covers, and each artist wants to make it original? Or is it just that the publishers thought that's what would appeal to each country? |
Oh my gosh - everytime I've been reading throught ChitChat I've seen the title of this thread and didn't think it would interest me. Dumb Dumb me didn't realize it was about Harry Potter!!!
Only 25 more hours and I'll be able to pick up my copy of the book. I've been worried that my mom was going to pick up the book and have her hands on it before I was able to get my crack at reading it. She has asked me to pick up the book now. Yeah!! I'm going to the Justin Timberlake/Christina Aguillera concert on Friday night and figure on the way home I'll stop by the Borders to pick up our reserved copy. Then I'll hide the book under my bed so mom cant get her hands on it before I start it. That is if I'm not up all night reading it. We have an executive board retreat on Saturday and I've already warned my Archon that I may not be paying attention. Of course, if they want me to do all the bad/hard work for all of next semester that will be the time to ask me to volunteer for it. I'm going to be so engrossed in the book that I'll probably just be saying "uhhuh, yeah, that's okay, mmmmhhh, etc" and will have no idea what I just agreed to. |
more Harry Potter news for you....
Harry Potter Author Sues N.Y. Daily News
By ERIN McCLAM NEW YORK (AP) - Author J.K. Rowling sued the Daily News for $100 million Wednesday after the newspaper obtained an early copy of her new Harry Potter novel and published a preview, the book's U.S. publisher said. The News published details of ``Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix'' after buying a copy from a Brooklyn health food store that had mistakenly put the book out for sale before its Saturday release. The suit, prepared by lawyers for Rowling and Scholastic Inc., claims the newspaper damaged Rowling's intellectual property rights and harmed Scholastic's $3 million worldwide marketing campaign. The book - the fifth installment of the adventures of the boy wizard - has been under extraordinary security ahead of the release. In a statement, Scholastic said it hoped ``this unfortunate situation will not spoil the surprise for millions of children around the country who have been eagerly awaiting the book.'' Scholastic provided a copy of the suit to The Associated Press and said it had been filed late Wednesday in Manhattan federal court. There was no way to verify the claim Wednesday evening. ``We will vigorously defend any action and are confident we did nothing wrong journalistically or legally,'' Daily News spokesman Ken Frydman said. The News story contained what it called a ``brief glimpse into the 870 action-packed pages'' of ``Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.'' ``If you don't want to know anything about how Harry and his pals spend their fifth year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, stop now and buy the book when it's officially released Saturday,'' the News said. An accompanying graphic displayed, with legible text, two of the novel's pages. The News said the store owner received a shipment of four books from a wholesaler and decided to put them in the window. The owner told the paper he didn't know he was supposed to wait until Saturday. The paper withheld the name of the store and its owner. Retailers signed agreements not to put the book on sale early, with Scholastic threatening to punish violators by withholding timely shipments of future Potter books. Stores across the United States plan late-night parties Friday, and a countdown is scheduled in New York's Times Square. Festivities also were planned in England, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Scholastic has commissioned a first printing of 8.5 million copies. The books are making their way from printing presses to distribution facilities to retailers and private homes under tight security. Advanced Marketing Services, a San Diego-based distributor that expects to handle about 2 million Potter books between Saturday and January 2004, has hired security guards in the United States and added guard dogs for a Canadian distributor it partially owns. Meanwhile, authorities in Newtown-le-Willows, England, were looking for a tractor-trailer containing 7,800 copies of ``Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix'' that was taken from outside a warehouse. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I CANT WAIT!!!
I am soooo excited!! I have a feeling that from Saturday to Sunday most of the GC Harry Potter group will be OFFLINE :) I have a feeling I wont be able to put this one down Has anyone heard of any of the books that came out maybe popping up on Ebay or somewhere of the sort??? I cant believe the luck of the people who stumbled across books out early...lucky lucky |
Ack! My American covers did not show. Wah...... (and all that hard work too).
I really don't know why the cover artwork is so different? I guess the Marketers for different countries go with what they think will sell? On that note, I don't know why German covers have her listed as "Joanne K. Rowling". Apparently, there is a real science to the artwork of book covers. I've heard it said that if a book sells well, it's because it was a good book, but if it sells poorly, it's because the cover was unappealing...(LOL) I wonder why the American and Canadian covers are different..... sure we're different countries, but we're not *THAT* different....... |
I HATE MORNING RADIO DJ'S!!!
This morning, I'm driving in and they GIVE AWAY WHO DIES IN THE STORY! Granted, I turned the radio down JUST in time, but I turned it back up to hear something I HATED HEARING! I won't tell you what they said, but THANKS FOR RUINING IT ASSHOLES!    |
Speaking of spoilers, I have a request... if you're going to post spoilers, please use spoiler warnings.
I pre-ordered my copy from Amazon, but asked for free shipping, so I'm not going to get it for a few days :( (On the up side, that means it'll come on a weekday. I work from a home office. This means I can get my paws on the book before my husband does... :D ) |
Is anyone going to any of the Harry Potter parties tomorrow night? I'll probably be a bit drunk, so I don't want to set a bad example around the little kiddies. I'd go if I were sober AND they were serving snacks!!LOL

I think they're diff just cuz Scholastic has all the printing rights in the U.S., whereas in canada, Raincoast through Bloomsbury print and publish the book (u can see both their names on the spine, etc). ******** OT: I love how Raincoast is so environmentally conscious when it comes to printing...all HP books from them are printed on 100% recycled(40% post-consumer) paper and it's processed chlorine-free! ******** I really liked the german covers too!! Did you notice that Goblet of fire is one word in German...I need to take german lessons... ******** I emailed my friend various HP recipes...we're getting together on saturday after we get our books to have a HP night (including reading the book to each other). I found 2 recipes for butterbeer, so I think we'll def try one of those... |

Feuer is fire and kelch is cup. A Becher is actually "goblet" and "tasse" is a cup also (like a teacup). My German is not good enough to know the nuances of what kelch is, but I guess they figured that would be the best translation for it....hmmmmmmmm |
