So, you decided to be typical and cliche`: Essentially, defend your org, explain why you chose it, and offer the "some of my close friends/family members are NPHC" qualifier.

When will folks get it? :) You were old as heck when you finally became a Groove so you should really know better. There are some discussions (especially old threads like this) that you should let roll off of your back. Remember that you all care more about your organization than anyone else does. Many of us have only knowingly met a couple of Grooves and Swings in our lifetimes. :)

Well said NYGroover. At my alma mater, the Grooves and Swings were very visible on campus. I had an opportunity to meet members from both organizations through community service events, and they were always assiduous and hard working in their efforts. Much Respect!

I apologize for responding in caps lock. This is nostalgic because as a college freshman I was introducted into Groove Phi Groove by a member who took his personal time to welcome new freshman and to give them info on the school and its inner workings before actually arriving at campus. Its funny because this was one of the first sites that popped up when I was searching for more information on Groove and that's when I decided to respond. But Now I am officially a brother and didn't even think I would arrive back here. Anyway its a shame that you guys can't look at what your writing and see how rude you are acting. My point is you can't knock down someone history if you cant even prove its wrong. None of you have lived through that time to say with a fact that the history is wrong. I always say that all these things in these books can be false and the only truth is within the one who lived the experiences. The history books we have her say something totally different in France or another country. and Dr Phil i dont know if what you said about that Groove was you downplaying Groove Phi Groove but I want you to know our members are not perfect and even though we try to chose the best sometimes a little less slips through. And as far as distancing ourselves: Our history may be different and our knowledge and perception but that does not mean we are removing ourselves away from any other organization. We all are similar by the fact that we are here to serve the community and uplift our youth however we are not one organization but many who have different qualities and origins and that is what makes us different. We are a fellowship but have many of the tendencies BGLO's have but that does not mean we are posers or copying. I dont know whether you feel you created lines and stepping but I know that we identify it with our african heritage so please dont knock us for not submitting to being your creation. We are commited to making a change guys so don't act like our many communities do and focus on being enemies instead of working cooperatively.

A lot of things are a reflection of the motherland (and we all know this) but don't act like what BGLO's and orgs like them do today was taken directly from Africa; like that's where you got it from. You and others like you say that to discredit BGLO's (which by the way, the Grooves might actually have been part of creating the stepping that's done today...who knows?) and/or so you can feel better about saying you're not like them while being just like them in many ways. The thing is...there's nothing wrong with orgs being like eachother...just don't trash talk and act like you're so different. Now that I've said my peace on that...Congrats on becoming a Groove. I know many Grooves and on the campuses where I've met them, they are very much respected by the NPHC orgs and participate in all the council's activities. Also, there are a lot of interesting discussions that happen on GC. Why don't you try to become a part of the community and help the GCers learn more about your org instead of continuously rehashing this argument. Again, congrats and welcome back to greekchat! :)

phantomreaper 08-13-2010 05:15 PM

thanks for the congratulations

who started the trash talking or whatever you want to call it. This topic was created to learn more about the organization but look what has resulted. Yes we addressed that our stepping comes from the motherland. Yet the other BLGO members on this site are the ones who insisted that we retrieved it from them. We are not saying that they are wrong for not recognizing the origin but they are saying we are wrong for doing so. Of course it was not taken directly from Africa today but we just believed it evolved from there. And please don't say we say that to discredit other BLGO's because you are not a part of our organization to be able to say that. Maybe you just feel discredited when we say that but that is not the purpose. We are essentially showing a different "upbringing". And I will become a part of the community this is just one of the few topics that was focused on my org that I wanted to comment on. To my fellow Groovers I just want you to understand that we will never stop being questioned and disrespected because of our youthfulness and uniqueness (this not targeted to anyone but just a general statement from what i experienced on and off this website) so please continue to do with you do despite any negativity. And to Dr. Phil addressing what you said to NY Groover it seems that you are looking for a repeat of 2002. He doesnt have to continue this thread any longer constantly defending our org when people just want to belittle it. No matter what others say we are not here for popularity,Fame, Parting, or etc those are just benefits that come with our true purpose uplifting the community so people can talk and say what they want but we the brothers of Groove Phi Groove know what we stand for.

The stepping that you all do does NOT come from the motherland! If it does, then you all better start doing the South African gumboot dance in stepshows, exactly as they do it in South Africa (wellington boots and all). Yes, I think that's the answer. You can honor your heritage and bring a different flavor all at the same time. That will show everyone!!!;)
