Official Insignia

Three golden stars, crown set with pearls, within a gold crescent of three hundred degree bearing three deltas in black enamel is the official badge of the Fraternity. Tri Delta initiates receive a Stars and Crescent Badge with her initials, the Greek letters of her chapter, and her chapter Initiation number engraved on the back. The badge belongs to Tri Delta and is lent to each member during her lifetime or as long as she remains a member.

DOH - I've even toured their headquarters and seen all the crescents they feature - but I always think of a trident as their symbol. I am going to stand in the corner in penance. . .

Yes. I want it lol

Gammy Bug

I heard from IHQ - the Gammy Bug was never an official mascot. A task force decided against adopting it as an official mascot. Cheryl Gunter, our historian, was given a copy of my inquiry, so I'll let you know if she adds anything.

I rarely thought about squirrels (except to avoid them in the street) before I pledged Alpha Gamma Delta.

I loved green and yellow while growing up...red was occasionally. That being said, I do wish that our Founders had been more specific about what shade "buff" was supposed to be. So, now most AGDs use the BRIGHT yellow but I keep thinking..hmmm..is that what the Founders meant?

I've always heard of buff being a darker mustard color, or a yellowed tan.

I think it was the 1980s when I first noticed people sporting the playboy bunny and then it being associated with Kappa. I think my memory is correct. I always hated it. It's an unnecessary and stupid reference.

I read years ago where playboy was either suing or called for a cease and desist on the use of the playboy bunny in reference to Kappa. Kappa started telling members to stop getting things with the logo and burn the things they already have. LOL. The good thing is that was never an official animal or symbol.

/of course you know much more about this than I do

***************************

With that said, I love everything about Delta's colors and official and unofficial symbols. What I sometimes don't like is how some (licensed and unlicensed) vendors put it together and how some Deltas of all ages choose to display it. But, I have no real complaints as long as they are not violating Protocol and Traditions.

I remember this in the early 90's too...sooo glad it died out. And that's hilarious about the cease and desist if that's true, but yeah how you gon' just take a trademarked symbol and use it like it's officially yours?! LOL!

I really like our colors because of what they stand for but I can't stand my high school colors (crimson and gray; sometimes red and gray/white/black). My mom has this big portrait of me on her living room wall in my red cap and gown with white collar. My college colors are purple and gold. Really? LOL!

That's the problem, there are different definitions of what the "buff" rose actually looked like in 1904.

There was an article in the Alpha Gamma Delta Quarterly mag several years ago where someone had researched the topic with no strong conclusion.

Oh well, I still like buff/yellow..just glad it wasn't !@#^&! (not meant as cursing, meant as "What????" ;)

I was the same when I was younger, except I favoured green and red (apart or together [I love Christmas :)], yellow doesn't work on the exceptionally pale. Our chapter regards buff to be a pale yellow, except when ordering clothes. Then we take what we can get, which is usually yellow (because gold can look awkward).

There are some girls that don't like our colours, but green and red are my favourite colours, and the buff balances them out. I figure that being that we have three colours, every Alpha Gam must be able to find at least one of them that they look good in. I love having the squirrel as a mascot because then I'm reminded of the Fraternity pretty much all of the time :)

I really like the lyre as our symbol-I think it is beautiful and unique. James Avery Craftsman had a perfect lyre necklace years ago that I bought but have since misplaced :(-it had the exact number of strings which can be difficult to find. One night at work I was wearing the necklace and speaking with two young women about their sick pet when they both asked if I was an AXO.
I like the colors red and green but rarely wear them together. I have red hair but look great in red so no problems there.
As far as college colors-Maroon and white combination is much better than burnt orange:)

I have always loved lily of the valley. My mother put some down in the garden when I was a young girl, and I always thought the flowers were so pretty and delicate. At some point I'm going to get off my butt and plant some myself.

Green is not my favorite color in the world (my favorites would be black and indigo) but I love the meaning behind the green and white.

I've always thought of pearls as beautiful (but it's such a PITA to clean pearl jewelry :( ).

Now, giraffes... not so much. They're not exactly cute and cuddly.

ElieM 06-22-2011 09:48 PM

my bio-sister loves giraffes, and has a whole bunch of them, including stuffed ones in my niece's nursery - they are pretty cute
