Well really if you listen to the lyrics, Taylor's dad DOES approve of her gettin' that white dress, apparently ("And said, marry me Juliet, You'll never have to be alone, I love you and that's all I really know, I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress, It's a love story baby just say yes"). See, it's all better now. ;)

But my original point still stands. No one consulted HER, he went and talked to her dad and now he's telling her to buy a white dress. Why is Juliet not included in the decisions of her own life, let alone clothing? I just find it antiquated that in 2009 the idea of women waiting to be asked (after their father's give permission) is supposed to be cheesy feel good music. I can just imagine the response of my step-father if some guy asked for permission to ask for my hand in marriage. It'd be along the lines of "if you think asking me is part of the process, you obviously don't know my daughter well enough to marry her."
Also the amount of women who look good in a white dress is low. I'd never wear a white dress, and if people think I'm the Whore of Babylon for wearing ivory so be it. In many cultures the "purity" of a woman was tied to her head covering, and not the dress color.
Also, the lack of knowledge about Shakespeare kills me. Juliet was forbidden to be with Romeo and was then promised to Count Paris, and then you know, they commit suicide. I can only pray the next pop love song is about Sylvia Plath or Virginia Woolf and how they got together with a handsome poet and lived happily ever after.
