On a positive note, Anna, our US laser radial sailor did so well in the breeze that she is back in first and so far ahead of the 4th place boat that she is guaranteed a medal even if she bombs the medal race which is scheduled for tomorrow!!

Best of luck to her to bring home the GOLD!!!

LttleMsPrEp 08-18-2008 12:26 PM

Gymnastics fans i'm sorry for the spoiler but has anyone checked out this article??

http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/bei...v=ap&type=lgns

Personally I think it sucks but like Nastia said I guess it really doesn't matter to her since she won the most important individual medal of all..

It is obvious that something really needs to be done about the Code of Points that was changed after Paul Hamm's disputed gold at the Athens Olympics. Not only is this a terrible way to break a tie in gymnastics, but it isn't very fair.

Also, the code of points should not be rewarding a gymnast who falls on her second vault for a medal instead of the one who stuck both of her landings. Just because there was more difficulty, doesn't mean that it should have been scored better.

Can you tell I am bitter about the scoring this year?

Gymnastics once had ties also, so I don't understand the need for tiebreakers now.

LttleMsPrEp 08-18-2008 01:37 PM

I'm still bitter about Cheng Fei getting a medal for falling over Alicia Sacramone who didn't.. not to mention that the gymnast that happened to edge Nastia out of the uneven bars title is one of the "women" at the center of the age eligibility dispute.. something really needs to be done about the scoring.

My mom has a theory that the reasoning behind giving He the medal over Nastia was probably "home court" advantage other than her scores being "closer to a 10".. either way the scoring has really made me bitter towards the judges.

"home court" advantage
My husband and I have been fuming about this througout the whole Olympics, not only in gymnastics, but in diving as well.

We have been yelling at the tv at various times. I have made the observation that they would have to land on their ass to not win - well, I guess they can do that too and still beat us!!

That is disgusting!!!! I can't wait to watch tonight to hear Bela's reaction to the scoring;)

My thoughts exactly!!! It was touching that he got teared up while discussing what happened with Alicia Sacramone and the vault finals and how it wasn't right to "rip her off twice"

ANd as far as diving?!?!?! i noticed too there were def. times when Guo and Wu made bigger splashes upon entry than what they were supposed to and still got over 75 points.. whereas when other countries did the same thing the judges were no where near as lenient on their scores

AOII_LB93 08-18-2008 02:59 PM

My husband and I were both discussing the diving scoring...we think it has a lot to do with the judges having preconceived notions of the divers before they dive. Unless Guo or Wu had really effed up, they got much higher scores for comparable dives than other divers...seems a little unfair if you ask me.

We do too. My husband was fuming that any time there is subjective "scoring" it shouldn't be considered a sport:rolleyes: Forget that these girls (and guys) are amazing athletes!!

He thinks only sports where someone crosses a line first or wins more points, like in tennis, should be considered "true" sports!! I think it's just sour grapes!! He hates for the US to lose.;)

BEIJING — What started out as a simple baseball game Monday night almost turned into an international incident.

By the time the United States was done with a 9-1 victory over China, there had been:

• Three ejections,

• Seven hit batsmen,

• Two injuries,

• And an assortment of hard feelings.

Girl from my hometown won a silver; fantastic news for her, and I know my hometown is pretty excited about it.

The judges in gymnastics are biased and the scoring is wrong, IMHO. At first, I didn't understand why the US coaches didn't file for a protest for Alicia yesterday. But when Tim explained it tonight about filing a protest, it makes much sense. But, the results were not right.

I 100% agree with Bela. Many people would say that "that is that", but sorry, the judges were showing favoritism towards the Chinese.

CutiePie2000 08-19-2008 01:04 AM

Yay! Simon Whitfield got the silver in the Triathlon. YAY!

I def. agree and it's kind of sad but it's making me loose respect for the judging committee. I understand that to prevent bias you don't have judges from the same countries at the gymnasts but when the judges that are left are people from countries that have never won an olympic medal in gymnastics it's ridiculous. Nastia didn't have mistakes that were as noticeable as He which is what IMHO should've been the "tie-breaker" since they aren't allowed to double medal..

SOPi_Jawbreaker 08-19-2008 09:07 AM

I don't understand why the tie-breaker is to drop another set of scores. I understand the reason for dropping the highest and lowest scores is to get closer to the median score. However, wouldn't it make more sense to break the tie by adding back in the highest and lowest scores, so that the tie-breaker score is based on all six judges instead just three judges.

GO U.S. Women's Soccer!

GO NATASHA KAI!

I've always been so fascinated with that girl's tattoos -- check 'em out here: http://www.vanishingtattoo.com/tattoo/celeb-kai.htm

OUCH!

sunnyhibiscus 08-20-2008 12:27 AM

Poor Lolo Jones. I want to give her and her family a big hug.

It's good ones for the women's balance beam final and Johnathan Horton on the High Bar final. I won't spoil it.

And the Spanish synchronized swimming pair tried to wear lights on their costumes, but the officials would have none of that. Good move. Here's more about that.

That 15 year old Japanese girl (Koko) looks just as small as the Chinese girls. I still don't think they are as young as people think they are.

ETA: I hate how Shawn Johnson walks. But yay for Gold & Silver!!!

The judges have been showing favortism for the Chinese in many events. This year's Olympics have been a joke. :(

It's a bunch of hooey. They deduct the next lowest score...WTF? So, the 14-year old had an 8.9 and Nastia had a 9.0. Nastia was basically punished for having a higher mark. How does that make any kind of sense?

sunnyhibiscus 08-20-2008 10:00 AM

Cheng Fei received too high marks in the Balance Beam Final. The fourth place finisher, Anna Pavlova, lost out by .05. Not to take anything away from Cheng Fei or the Chinese gymnasts, but Anna should have won the bronze medal. Cheng Fei's mistakes were grater in magnitude than Anna's.

With the diving contest last night, the judges gives 10s on the Chinese divers, and they have some minor mistakes, like flat feet in the dives.

That is an exaggerated walk that most gymnasts have done for years in meets. I remember doing it also as a young gymnast.

I was with you there... until I looked at the Chinese platform divers. The girls are 15 and 16, and look considerably (that being a relative term at 15-ish) older than the gymnasts. And the divers are also teeny-tiny.

How appropriate Nastia chose "Once Upon a December" for her balance beam routine. I loved that song and I love Anastasia the movie!

AGDee 08-21-2008 06:50 AM

Mr. Lightning Bolt is such a prima donna.. I'm over him!

sunnyhibiscus 08-21-2008 09:59 AM

Sad day for US Softball. They lost to Japan for the gold medal.

Usain Bolt's performance was sick. If he would run the 40 yard dash, we would run at 3.5 seconds!

IOC's Rogge's comment about Bolt's showboating ill timed?

BEIJING — Jacques Rogge is so bought, so compromised, the president of the IOC doesn’t have the courage to criticize China for telling a decade of lies to land itself these Olympic Games.

All the promises made to get these Games — on Tibet, Darfur, pollution, worker safety, freedom of expression, dissident rights — turned out to be phony, perhaps as phony as the Chinese gymnasts’ birthdates Rogge was way too scared to investigate.

One of the most powerful men in sports turned the world away from his complicity. Instead, he has flexed his muscles by unloading on a powerless sprinter from a small island nation.

Rogge’s ripping of Usain Bolt’s supposed showboating in two of the most electrifying gold-medal performances of these Games has to be one of the most ill-timed and gutless acts in the modern history of the Olympics.

“That’s not the way we perceive being a champion,” Rogge said of the Jamaican sprinter. “I have no problem with him doing a show. I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters.”

Oh, this is richer than those bribes and kickbacks the IOC got caught taking.

All the powerful nations — including the United States — have carte blanche at the Games. They can pout and preen, cheat, throw bean balls, file wild complaints, break promises that got them a host bid, whatever they want. They can take turns slapping Rogge and his cronies around like rag dolls as long as the dinner with a good wine list gets paid.

A single individual sprinter? Even if you don’t like his manner, that’s whom Rogge deems it necessary to attack, to issue a worldwide condemnation?

“I understand the joy,” Rogge said. “He might have interpreted that in another way, but the way it was perceived was ‘catch me if you can.’ You don’t do that. But he’ll learn. He’s still a young man.”

Perceived by whom? Old fat cats making billions of Olympic dollars on the backs of athletes like Bolt for a century now? They get to define this? They get to lecture about learning?

Bolt is everything the Olympics are supposed to be about. He isn’t the product of some rich country, some elaborate training program that churns out gold medals by any means necessary.

He’s a breath of fresh air, a guy who came out of nowhere to enrapture the world with his athletic performance and colorful personality. This is no dead-eye product of some massive machine.

He was himself, and the world loved him for it.

BUSTED!!

Seems that there's finally substantial proof that the Chinese gymnastic team lied about their ages: Hacker exposes alleged Olympics age fraud.

It will be quite interesting to see what's done about it!

pbear19 08-21-2008 02:19 PM

There's something very 1984 about the way online data on the Chinese gymnasts is being removed, and how the government is trying to rewrite history as regards to their age (allegedly). Creepy.

Wow...all I can say is there was no doubt in my mind they were younger than they were saying!! How'd they think they were going to get away with this???

nittanyalum 08-21-2008 02:43 PM

China should never have gotten the Olympics in the first place. Nothing about anything that's occurred this entire time has surprised me.
