As I had some personal issues come up, I decided to change course (again ) and am looking at a pre-master's course to start this coming summer. (2.75 gpa, GRE or MAT, 2 recommendations and a statement of purpose) This way I can re-adjust to school without so much pressure. If I can handle it, I can transfer my status to degree seeking or transfer the credits to another school.

I never know what to write for the statement.

This is week 3 of official teaching in my masters programme. I must say, it's like boot camp. Monday I spent all afternoon lying on my back underneath a 17th century dining table, looking at woodworm damage. Today we hiked up and down Stirling Castle looking and critiquing reconstruction. We've got to have our dissertation subjects sorted out by next week (thankfully, mine is good to go, w00t!). Missing my fiance terribly, but loving Scotland. The resources for study are amazing, and having so many significant sights to study and significant collections (public and private) so close is *awesome*.

nikki1920 10-12-2007 03:58 PM

That sounds like so much FUN!! What are you studying again?

neosoul 10-12-2007 07:51 PM

heh, it is a *ton* of fun, and moreso because there's only 4 of us and two lecturers, but it means we can't just putz around. The official title of my degree is "Master of Letters in the History of Art: Decorative Arts and Design History". Basically...we cover everything from tapestries to tea kettles to tables to silverwear to paintings. At the moment, we're cranking through the 16th century, focusing on British and Scottish country houses for examples. We're lucky to have the Burrel collection 15 minutes away, Stirling castle 45 minutes away, Kelvingrove museum is a 2 minute walk (literally), Edinburgh is a 2 hr drive, and London is an hour long 99p Easy Jet flight away. Location, location, location. :)

AUDeltaGam 10-31-2007 05:24 PM

I will be starting my Ed.S. in Administration in January '08 :)

KSUViolet06 12-12-2007 12:33 AM

My first semester of grad school is 2 days away from being over!

BetteDavisEyes 01-01-2008 12:33 PM

I'm almost done but not quite. LOL!

I graduate with my Masters in Education in May this year (God willing) but I have decided to continue my education by going for a Reading certificate (which I should have by summer 09), then a Reading Credential (which I will have by fall 10) and finally, a Masters in Reading (which I will have in summer 2011). Oh boy. I'm a sucker for educational punishment.

Drolefille 01-01-2008 02:00 PM

I got a 4.0 last semester. *Does the happy dance*

IlovemyAKA 01-02-2008 11:56 AM

I took the GMAT. I applied for an MBA with concentration in Health Administration. My BS is in Health Services Administration.

update... it's been about 3 weeks and SCHOOL IS OFFICIALLY OVAR!!!

ShyViolet 01-16-2008 03:29 PM

Well, I'm bang on target for finishing on time. Seven months and two weeks to go until I'm done with my PhD. I can't wait! I'm in the middle of the third-year-freak-out, currently trying to determine the location of four paintings in the Royal Collection so I can see them, analyse them, and write Chapter II. I've got my two biggest chapters (III and IV)written, and just have two smaller ones, and the intro and conclusion to finish. I also have an article in the works. I'm also applying for postdocs, which seems really scary. Whew. I need more chocolate. ;)

Anyone else on the home stretch of a PhD and freaking out about the real world??

XOMichelle 10-26-2008 02:37 AM

this is awesome! 4 years later, I log in and my thread is still going strong. :-)

bump.

swedishkd87 10-28-2008 05:18 AM

Hey! I just got my graduate school applications in for the fall of next year. I'm applying to MS and MPH programs in Public Health. I hate the waiting process...it's so nerve-wracking!

squirrely girl 10-28-2008 11:13 AM

i remember the waiting process as being pretty painful too! luckily my first response was an acceptance so i calmed down really quick! best of luck to you.

swedishkd87 10-28-2008 04:46 PM

Awww thank you so much! Yeah, I'm hoping that I hear back soon so I can calm down a bit. I'm studying abroad this semester, so it's a pain that I can't check my mailbox...but I'm not expecting to hear back till around mid-December for some of early ones and then February/March for the rest.

DZJess 10-29-2008 01:41 AM

GRE

Im taking the GRE this year or next and hopefully will be attending Columbia for conservation biology!

swedishkd87 10-29-2008 10:38 AM

Best of luck on the GRE! It's not too bad :)

nauadpi 10-29-2008 10:46 AM

My life is getting really crazy. I am trying to finish up my dissertation, as I plan to try to defend it on Dec. 2nd. Hopefully I will have my PhD in Space and Planetary Sciences by the end of that day.

(honk, honk) <----my horn

Go you! Congratulations

You'll do fine!!! Remember, your the EXPERT in your project ;)

Just go in there and exude confidence when you defend!!! I was nervous, but I got my hair and nails done with a excellent looking suit before I defended...

And as far as writing, hopefully your program will give you leeway... Make sure you dot your "i's" and cross your "t's" to the format of your university.

And Space and Planetary sciences... You go girl!!! Not too many women in that field of science... Does that mean you go to Mauna Kea? ;) :)

I wish I was at Mauna Kea, but I actually don't do any observational work. Everything I do is in a lab or looking at remote imagery from other planets.

As for my defense and dissertation, I am really just going to be happy when it is all done, but to make things interesting I am actually going to be 24 and a half weeks pregnant when I defend.

KSUViolet06 11-07-2008 12:33 AM

When I first posted in this thread I was just looking at programs, now I'm in my 2nd year. I was looking back on this thread and can't believe that the time has gone by so quickly. I also think it's interesting that I ended up in a Counseling program when I initially was looking to get an MA in English. I think I made a good choice though, since I love talking to people and helping others, so why not get paid for it?

ShyViolet 11-11-2008 10:04 PM

To nauadpi: I'm soo jealous! ;)

I wish my viva (our equivalent of the defense) was that soon! I just submitted my doctoral thesis on Friday (in its 400-page glory) and have yet to hear when I will be viva'd. Is it standard in your programme to have such a quick turnaround between submitting and defending? I may have to wait anywhere from 4 weeks to 3 months (the maximum time the examiners can take to read the thesis). Hopefully it's sooner rather than later...

Best of luck!!

OUrs we have to give it to them 3 weeks ahead of defending. Mine will end up being a bit closer to 2.5 weeks before defending, but not too bad. Part of my dissertation have already been published in peer review journals, so that helps make the process so quick. Also my dissertation will be more on the 250 page length. This helps to cut down the time they need to read it.

I know how you feel! I finished my MA thesis at the end of September and I should be finding out how I did by the end of November and my graduation is 10 December! That is one thing that drives me insane about Ireland, the forever waiting time between exams/submission and results! Congrats on finishing up the thesis!

nauadpi 11-18-2008 03:56 PM

Well I officially got my dissertation into my committee on Friday, and today my information showed up on the calendar of upcoming PhD dissertation defenses... It really is going to happen, 2 weeks from today.

nauadpi 12-10-2008 07:23 PM

It is official... I defended my dissertation on December 2nd and passed... I have since then made corrections to my dissertation and turned it into the grad school today... I am done!!!

KSUViolet06 12-10-2008 08:06 PM

I just finished all of my finals. Yay.

DreamfulSpirit 12-17-2008 03:26 PM

I'm excited!!! I just got my acceptance letter into a graduate certificate program through East Carolina University!

Its for Community College Instruction and I hope to use this as a stepping stone into a masters in Adult/Higher Education. To me its weird to say I'm a grad student now lol!

KSUViolet06 01-25-2009 11:34 AM

Just started a new semester. One of my classes has a GROUP term paper? Um, what??

I'm not loving the idea of writing a paper with 4 other students.

swedishkd87 06-01-2009 09:40 AM

I'm officially attending BU for my MPH! :-D

PhoenixAzul 06-01-2009 11:29 AM

Wow, holy old thread batman! I just read my post about being in my 3rd week of school. I graduated in December with Merit, just barely missing Distinction. Loved the programme and my lecturers, and even though my thesis damned near killed me...wouldn't trade it for the world. Anyone thinking of going abroad for their MA/PhD, do it! Absolutely do it!
