Black School Bus Driver Reports Kids In KKK Robes At Bus Stop

POSTED: 6:44 am EDT June 25, 2004
UPDATED: 8:08 am EDT June 25, 2004

OCALA, Fla. -- A black school bus driver filed a complaint with authorities after seeing two children dressed in Ku Klux Klan robes and carrying a cross at one of her stops.

Claudette Johnson told the Marion County Sheriff's Office that she spotted the pair Wednesday among a group of students waiting for the bus. Johnson made eye contact with the two as the other students boarded her bus, but said the robed students did not speak.

The children in robes then crossed the street and handed the cross to another child, who dragged the cross away, the complaint said. They stood between 5 and 5 1/2 feet tall and weighed about 100 pounds, according to Johnson.

The hair-do from hell
By Elizabeth Hopkirk, Evening Standard
29 June 2004

She had hoped to look like Beyonce Knowles.

But what should have been a relaxing trip to the hairdresser turned into a nightmare for 22-year-old Ebony Glanville.

The student suffered what appeared to be an allergic reaction to hair dye used during her trip to the salon. Her scalp, face and eyes swelled severely within a few hours of the treatment.

Today, almost two weeks later, Ms Glanville is still taking steroid medication. She now plans to sue the salon she claims is responsible.

She said: "I left the salon at 8pm on the Friday and the next day my scalp started itching and I saw blood and dye on my headscarf.

"I went to hospital and they gave me some tablets, but when I woke up on Monday the top of my head was three times bigger than normal and my eyes were swollen as well.

"I looked like Frankenstein's monster. I could hardly see anything and I was really scared because I truthfully thought I was going to stay like that. I thought I was going to go blind.

"I wanted to look like Beyonce not ET." She added: "My mum calls me the Elephant Man. I have hardly spoken to anyone because I could see from the corner of my eye that people were giving me funny looks."

Miss Glanville paid £140 to have her hair dyed and micro-weave hair extensions added at Doreen Hair Fashions in Finsbury Park. She added a ?5 tip.

The owner of the salon is out of the country but a member of staff claimed Miss Glanville must have been allergic to the black dye used.

Miss Glanville, who lives in Stonebridge and is studying counselling, said she was still feeling the after-effects. "I am on crutches because I get weak. The dye is still in my system. My eyes are jet black. It looks like someone's punched me in the eye.

"When you go to a salon you put your trust in them. I have spoken to a solicitor and they are going to try to sort it out. I want an apology and compensation."

A spokesman for Accidents Direct, the compensation claims company contacted by Miss Glanville, said: "She definitely has a case."

The Doreen salon website says: "We do our upmost (sic) best to make you feel beautiful ... all of our customers leave with beautiful hair and most of all, a smile on their faces."

yea man..that's sad, but i'm not sure how much of a case she has.....can you actually sue someone for YOUR allergic reaction?

That's what I was thinking, but you never know in this country.

TheEpitome1920 06-30-2004 12:32 PM

Arent you supposed to do a strand test with dyes anyway??? That's really unfortunate.

vanda 06-30-2004 12:38 PM

That happened to a lady here a few years ago. Her eyes swelled shut and she had severe breathing problems. It wasn't her first time using dye but the dye she had purchased was old ( That's why you don't buy dye from the dollars store). They said the chemical compund for the dye had broken down because it was too old. I believe some doctor offered to give hair grafts after her scalp healed for free.

ImaDiamond 06-30-2004 01:01 PM

Re: the price of beauty..

Maybe she had a reaction to the medicine that was given to her at the hospital and not the dye. I mean, I know she said her head was itching and what-not, but whatever was in the medication could have given her a similar reaction as well. Just a thought.

Steeltrap 06-30-2004 01:07 PM

On Ms. Glanville's injuries

Usually, a reliable hairdresser does a patch test to make sure there's no dye sensitivity. My biological sister's been a cosmetologist for 30 years, and is a rather expert colorist (see my pic in Look at Me for proof).

And as an aside, many salons also make clients sign liability releases in case something like that happens.

Yes you can. Hair color and relaxer products specifically say "DO A PATCH TEST BEFORE USING TO AVOID AN ALLERGIC REACTION".
This applies to both professional and at home products. As ST pointed out, a "good" stylist will do this before applying new products.

Ditto.

The botton line is that these hair care products contain some SERIOUS chemicals and can have an adverse reaction to some people.

I'm quite sure that Steeltrap's sister can attest to this - the field of Cosmetology does have a scientific/medical component and a person cannot graduate from a reputable cosmetology institution without having that down pat. I've had this same conversation with one of the hair stylists that works at the salon that I go to when I get my hair done. It's a serious issue. It's very important for a person who is taking a series of medications to inform the hairstylist b/c you never know what kind of chemical reaction will take place with the hair products and the medications. Some people are lucky, and others are not so lucky. Ultimately it is up to the hairstylist as a TRAINED professional to make the proper assessment and to offer the best possible recommendation allowed.

Neosoulchild 06-30-2004 03:07 PM

So are they supposed to do the spot check on a day before you actually get your color? I've had color many times and they have never done this for me. :(

http://biz.yahoo.com/rc/040630/healt..._viagra_1.html

WASHINGTON, June 30 (Reuters) - Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE - News) is warning pharmacists that fake Viagra tablets have been sold through at least one retail pharmacy in California and likely a second, U.S. regulators said on Wednesday.

The Food and Drug Administration said it and Pfizer "are analyzing the counterfeit product to determine its true composition and whether it poses any health risks."

 Why in the world would anybody want to buy fake Viagra?

RedefinedDiva 06-30-2004 06:45 PM

That's the same thing that I was thinking, neosoulchild. I mean, I understand what people are saying about the strand test, but most people don't want to wait. Often times, allergic reactions don't occur until later that night or the next day. And not to put down certain people, but some of the folks seen in our Hot Ghetto Mess posts don't appear to be the type that would be patient enough to wait for strand tests. :o I have never been to a salon and had a strand test performed for relaxer nor color. It is also the responsibility of the client and stylist to be aware of the medications, other services recently performed, etc. that may interact.

One thing's for sure: She looks like that movie "Mask."

Yes...there is no age limit on buying pregnancy tests, condoms or other birth control, etc. Only cigarettes and alcohol. Pregnancy tests run around $10 for two now too. How did she figure out she MIGHT be pregnant to begin with? Obviously her cycle had started or was about to start....

what a sad terrible mess for this girl and her family.

That's standard police blotter stuff that you still see in many small-town and community newspapers. Police reports, as are lawsuits and other legal documents, are public records.
