Y'all actually have a Family Law class? We sort of do -- it's taught by an adjunct, and from what I've heard (and seen), she's not a terrific lawyer in practice. I'll probably not take her class although family law is something I'm going to focus on out in the real world.

Question: For your MSW/JD program, do you have to have any child counseling experience? It just seems that those types of lawyers (in Oklahoma) are often placed into positions where they're expected to make decisions that their education (not including child psychology) has not really prepared them for. This has been a constant source of frustration from the point of view of the represented parties.

How do you only have 2 substantive plus LRW? Everybody up here thinks we get off easy with 3 substantive plus LRW.

Kevin 12-05-2005 04:35 PM

I'm an evening student. I have a real job during the day.

AHA. I thought you were going full-time.

Nah, my father's assistant quit on him, so I got the chance to be a legal assistant during the day in the practice I was hoping to inherit (which all is going smoothly). My foot's in the door with the client base, I'm learning how to manage a law firm, I'm learning how to deal with clients, and I have an excellent rapport with the relevant judges and their staff.

I'm pretty well paid for what I do, and I get to spread all my study stuff out on the conference room table -- the free coffee has been of use as well :)

Basically, I'm going to be taking 3 classes a semester plus summer school. I'll be done in about 4 years.

It's a pretty enviable situation really :)

Sorry, I don't think I was entirely clear. I was talking about the schedule my wife had when she got her master's in political science. A couple of the classes the poster mentioned sounded similar.

I'm not in law school yet. I'm currently going through the application process. I'm doing legal-related work right now, working for a legal organization doing public/media relations relating to policy matters, and some editing. I'm looking to start law school next fall at a place to be determined. Hopefully I haven't led people on here to believe that I'm a law student. That would be getting just a tad ahead of myself.

When I said I'd spoken with a family law practitioner, it's part of my effort to pick the brains of law student and lawyers. I want to have somewhat of an idea of what I'm getting into. I probably spoke to around 30-40 people in different parts of law and law school before I even made the decision to apply. I understand that you can't be totally prepared until Day One, but I figure the more info the better.
