I used Control F to find all the Ala. girls and it came up with 532. Seems like your number is pretty good. I never hand count if I can help it - I always get distracted and lose my place!! Technology can be a great help for people like me!

I did some break down of the Alpha Phi pledge class. Out of a total of 118 new members, here is what I got:
Alabama=22 Illinois=13 Georgia=10 Florida=9 Texas=8 Maryland=7 California=6 Indiana=6 Colorado=5 Ohio=5 Massachusetts=4 Tennessee=4 Virginia=3 Connecticut=3 Pennsylvania=3 New York=2 New Jersey=2 North Carolina=1 South Carolina=1 Wisconsin=1 Utah=1 Arizona=1 Kentucky=1 Oregon=1 Total=118 *About 1/5 of the new members are from Alabama *About half of the new members are from Southern states |
Two of my Alabama rec girls went Gamma Phi! I am over the moon! :) Two others went Kappa. It looks like the other four withdrew or were released.
Congratulations to all the new members, chapters and parents who survived this week! |
Congrats to all the moms & new pledges!! SewSheKnits...congrats to your DD...I have 5 cousins (all sisters) who were Kappas at Alabama back in the day...all the way from the early 80's to early 90's. She will have a ball :)

Is there an official quota number determined at University of Alabama? Various numbers have been posted on this thread.
|
I don't think they've posted that yet. I'll try to find out.
|
Quota was 117
AXO 113 ADPi 121 AGD 112 AOPi 119 Alpha Phi 118 ChiO 112 TriDelt 115 DG 123 DZ 117 G Phi 150 Theta 119 KD 106 KKG 118 Phi Mu 117 Pi Phi 116 Zeta 118 |
I am told that quota was 110 with the option to extend bids to 7 upperclassmen.
Pi Phi pledged 117, not 116. |

For sure 107 freshmen and 10 upperclass women. Some chapters did not optomize their upperclass quotas.

That makes 2,011 bids from a reported pnm pool of 2,113. That would be an amazing placement percentage if correct!
|
not sure where you get that number. The UA press release on their web site says 1896 total bids.

I have it all in a pivot table and can pull it for you :) ETA: I keep seeing 1896 as the final number, but my list is 1895. I either accidentally cut someone out or there's just a discrepancy here. Sorry either way :/ |
Quota was 107+10UC

^^ Can upperclassmen be quota additions?

2113 registered, 32 no shows

Mountain Brook, Vestavia, and Hoover are considered Birmingham -- sometimes girls from these areas are listed as Birmingham. Homewood also -- and there are several more communities in the B'ham area on the list. It is my understanding as well that quota was 107 + 10 upperclassmen. |
Yes, y'all are right--I got my 7s and 0s mixed up. But I still stand by 117 Pi Phis because that's what the regional site is telling me! Maybe that's your missing number, lovespink.
|
I noticed there are 44 states listed. Does anyone know how that compares to previous rushes?
|

For example, if the “general” quota is 107 and “upperclassmen” quota is 10, and a chapter only pledges 105 freshmen (by choice let’s say) can they pledge 12 upperclassmen (two being quota additions)? And as such, would the numbers be noted as 105 (quota) and 12 (upperclassmen)? Or would two from the “upperclassmen” pledges be counted toward the “general” quota number for the chapter? Thus 107 "general" quota and 10 "upperclassmen" quota. |
Well, I'm glad I spent hours and hours going through that horrendous list to get a workable spreadsheet for some comparisons, only to find myself beaten to the punch!
The only thing I'll add: The only states NOT represented on this list are: ID 0 ME 0 MT 0 ND 0 NM 0 SD 0 OK, one more add. If my numbers are accurate, 2113 registered, 1896 pledged = 89.% pledge rate from the start. I think that is REMARKABLE. Some girls didn't make the cut because of grades, and others dropped out for their own reasons. That leaves a precious few girls who really ended up on the short end of the stick. And considering there were snaps (I'm seeing too many discrepancies of a few girls for that not to be true), hopefully some of of the girls who ended up homeless due to no fault of their own got picked up at the last minute. |

However, I did repull and got the same 116 again. It was just a few manipulations of Excel cells so I doubt I made the same mistake twice. I feel so bad for whatever NM was left off that published list!! :( |
So happy - 2 of my rec girls joined Delta Zeta!
My list - Alpha Gamma Delta - 1 Alpha Omicron Pi - 1 Delta Gamma - 1 Delta Zeta - 2 Gamma Phi Beta - 1 (my favorite) Kappa Kappa Gamma- 1 Pi Beta Phi - 1 |

Life after an Unsuccessful Alabama Rush Experience
it's not fair or true to scare these girls into accepting bids from a house they don't want just because they will never get the chance to be Greek at Alabama again. I know a good handful of young women (at least 10) who were not successful during Fall Rush 2012 but were very successful during informal Spring Rush. In addition to meeting girls in a more organic situation, there was no pressure and therefore they made better choices and no one regrets their decision. They are all truly happy in their sorority today. While this can't possibly work for everyone who had a less then stellar Fall Rush experience, there is still hope for the Greek life after an unsuccessful Fall Rush.
|
It saddens me to read about girls that feel trapped by their bids. Recruitment is such a perplexing time. It occurred to me today while I was at dinner and heard someone complaining about a situation that I chalked up to our crazy city called Austin. Perception is such a strong emotion and such a strong motivator. Perception is reality.
At every campus across American you find chapters who have many girls on their lawns and for someone in the group (I would go as far to say this happens to every single chapter on every single competitive campus) it simply was not her first choice, but for many, it is their dream house. It makes it so hard to guide women into choices because one thing we don't have a visual on, is the heart. What rocks one girl, can turn off another. Some girls want the familiarity of what they have always known, some want a different view point so they can grow into who they want to be. So actives can prepare all week long for these lovely women to come see what they have to offer but behind the fancy straws, the perfect cupcakes, and the coordinating outfits, is a chapter who at the end of the day, can't orchestrate a song that sings to every heart. |
