So... anyone out there an SEC fan?! All I ever see on here is Big 10 stuff. I'm all about my SEC football (roll tide!) and I like the ACC a lot too. Anyone else?

I got a really special treat this weekend and got to go to the UF/FSU game in Gainesville with one of my good friends :) She goes to FSU and had an extra ticket. So much fun! And I'm a Nole Sympathizer and a Gator Hater so it was extra fun.

I'm an SEC fan...well, an LSU fan. I'll root for other SEC teams in bowl games or against non-SEC teams. I figure they must be mad about Meyer going to Ohio. Seriously, if UF was too stressful for his health and family, Ohio State won't be?

Cen1aur 1963 11-28-2011 05:27 PM

I was disappointed that Ohio State lost against Michigan, but it was still a very good and close game.

I'm an SEC fan! I cheer for SEC teams when they are playing outside the conference and not playing Kentucky.

Despite the fact that Kentucky football didn't have much of a pulse this year, it's happy times here in Lexington presently because Kentucky beat Tennessee this weekend for the first time since 1984!! :D GO CATS!!

Also, you are right, Urban is a ferocious recruiter, that is one of the reasons BGSU hired him way back when, when he was an assistant coach at Notre Dame. Hoke at Michigan may have been able to get some Ohio kids this year, but hopefully not so many next year, except maybe in Toledo. Or the ones that Urban doesn't see fitting into the program.

Problem is, most kids have signed commitment letters for next year already. One from our high school signed his commitment letter for Michigan State in late August/early September. You might be right for the year after that though.

I think with Hoke and Urban, we could see a rivalry like in the Bo/Woody years, which would be huge fun :)

GatorDG 11-28-2011 08:14 PM

Obviously from my name, you can tell I am a Gator fan. LSU and Bama in the National Championship game!! Anything else would be a disappointment for a good game. Sorry UGA, I do not see the upset. In case you did not notice the only decent team in the east was USC and you lost to them. Heck, you only beat us by 6 and we were just plain awful this year.

As far as Urban: I cannot speak for the rest of the Gator Nation but I am really disappointed and feel betrayed. When he resigned he said that it was because he just could not find the balance between super intense coach and family man. We loved him at UF or at least did. When he came out and said 'the last year has taught him how to balance family and coaching' I had to laugh out loud. How in the world could 8 months as an ESPN commentator teach him how to balance? Maybe he is counting the coaching he did for his son's high school team.

When Spurrier left, in true Spurrier style, he told it like it was; he wanted to move on to another challenge. We still love Spurrier, even though he is coaching in our division of the SEC. We look at Urban the way the LSU folks look at Saban - a man whose word is not to be trusted.

Maybe Urban could not take the intensity of the SEC and felt he needed to go to the Big 10 where things are not as intense :)

AGDLynn 11-28-2011 08:30 PM

He could not deal with LAT (Life After Tebow).

tootiepie2 11-28-2011 08:33 PM

Hopefully in a few years after they rebuild the team it will turn out as good for you as it has for LSU. For a while there was a lot of bitterness toward Saban and dislike for Miles. Now we can look back and see how lucky we are. I don't think to many people would trade Les for Nick now!!!

Sorry for not being more specific-the kids who have signed early signing period national letters of intent for the 2012-2013 year are off the board. But there still are some highly recruited kids who may have given verbal commitments that are not binding, but have not signed their NLI's. Coaches can and do poach these kids, or the kids change their minds for a variety of reasons before the regular signing period. Not too surprising when some kids give verbal commitments during their sophomore year of high school, for heaven's sake.

1) If I was a Gator (I'm not), I'd be annoyed, but college coaches being disingenous is hardly surprising unfortunately.

2) While we are discussing Florida, let me say a BIG thank you to to them on behalf on my beloved Denver Broncos for Tim Tebow. I didn't think God cared about football - apparently I was entirely mistaken because I just can't think of any other way to account for why he keeps winning games. It defies all football logic. Of course, the next game could change everything. ;)

3) Great teams playing each other do not necessarily make for great football games. Case in point: Bama and LSU. That would NOT be a good game unless something radically changes with one of them in a month. It wasn't a good game last time. It set new standards for boring. 5 field goals in 4 quarters and an overtime isn't a good game. I'd rather be forced to watch Dune five times in a row. I'd rather watch 6 straight hours of golf or ice curling. I'd rather call the last game good, give LSU the BCS trophy and be done with it.

4) On the topic of new coaches: If there are any out there that need a job, the Pac-12 suddenly has two openings, and I'm thinking a third may open up by the end of the week (the first two offer better weather). Conversely, if any Big East teams are in need of coaches - we've now got a couple available.

What TP said, for the most part. I have a hard time cheering for LSU at any time, unless they were playing Ohio State.

AXOmom 11-30-2011 02:09 AM

So as of today the Pac-12 has fired 4 coaches this season (3 in the last 2 days). Just curious if any football trivia buffs out there know the record number of coaches in a conference to lose their jobs in one season cause I'm thinking we're pushing it.

Official news out of Washington State, Mike Leach has been hired as the new head coach! I'm not sure how I feel about this considering his history, but I think it will be good for the school. Time will tell.

I may be in the minority, but I think Leach got shafted/blackmailed at Tech what with Craig James, his son, and the university officials and all.

Numerous players (past and current-when the investigation really heated up), as well as many coaches and members of the medical staff backed up Leach's side of the story about the "electrical closet" and the claims that Adam James was "locked and thrown in there like a caged animal." I also believe the team medical staff and head doctor backed up his side of the story as well.

Anyways, I think that's a solid hire. He'll bring some excitement back to the program and put the fans in the seats. Expect a lot of points on the board next year! His offenses at Tech were really fun to watch.

True. And goodness knows that WSU needs all the excitement it can get. It has been a rough decade for the Cougs and this announcement has everyone excited about Cougar football for the first time in awhile.

WCsweet<3 12-04-2011 12:53 AM

Didn't have an opinion either way, but WHO HITS A KICKER! I mean damn.

thetaj 12-04-2011 01:00 AM

He barely touched the kicker but he shouldn't have been that close to him anyways.

AXOmom 12-04-2011 03:09 AM

Okay, I HAVE to know - who hit a kicker....what happened???

AXOmom 12-04-2011 03:24 AM

Never mind, just caught up on Sport Center. Crap, why does all the interesting stuff happen the minute I step away once for a staff Christmas party. Note to self: Saturdays should be devoted entirely to college football- no exceptions.

AOII Angel 12-04-2011 04:08 AM

Awesome game. It's really hard for teams to keep the momentum up against the Tigers for more than a couple quarters. I'm glad I wore my Honey Badger shirt. Very deserving MVP.

AGDLynn 12-04-2011 09:09 AM

At least, UGA can say they allowed LSU to become the 1st SEC team to not score a 1st down in the 1st half.

Congratulations.

AGDee 12-04-2011 11:00 AM

*sigh* Sad day in Michigan. So close... but where was Michigan State's defense??? And that probably knocks Michigan out of a BCS bowl invitation. *sigh*

AOEforme 12-04-2011 06:21 PM

I still cannot believe that game happened the way it did... I keep going back over it and keep coming to the conclusion that there is no way we could have won.

We don't have cable at my house (I am a poor medical student and my roommate and I were not willing to pay $120 a month) so we set up both the ACC and Big 10 games streaming on the internet, one to a large computer screen and one to our TV. Between the streaming onto the computer and the streaming to the TV, the Big 10 game was running a good 2 minutes behind the actual time. My roommate was watching on Game Cast, so she was enjoying herself at the end because she knew it was going to work out for me and I was rolling on the floor in misery.

She deserved some enjoyment though, because she's a V Tech fan and that did not go well. :( Oh well, they are a young team and next year should be great for them.

I really wanted them to win, especially because an WVU v. V Tech Orange Bowl would have been incredible.

irishpipes 12-04-2011 09:27 PM

Words cannot even express the outrage at Oklahoma State. Talk about getting screwed. OSU won the Big 12 which was the #1 BCS rated conference. This selection is just wrong and shows the unbelievable bias towards the SEC.

psusue 12-04-2011 09:28 PM

What the heck is the TicketCity Bowl?! Is this a joke? OSU got the Gator Bowl and we beat them. We got passed over for the Meineke Car Care Bowl for crying out loud! Not happy about this. The players didn't deserve this. At least the stadium is nice...

I hate OSU and I agree. I forget who said it but someone mentioned that LSU has to beat Bama twice to be national champs, while Bama only has to beat LSU once. That just seems ridiculous. Yes, I know they are the two best teams in the country. I just think you should have to win your conference to play for the national title.

Although I despise Les Miles and LSU, I'll be rooting for LSU just because it seems more fair.

GatorDG 12-04-2011 09:38 PM

I am so sorry psusue. I am sure the reason is to try to whip up some interest for TV ratings for the Gator Bowl. They are probably counting on the UF/Urban/OSU bringing in viewers. From my point of view, who the heck care who wins between two 6-6 teams. I am not sure any time that goes 6-6 should even be in a bowl!!!

cheerfulgreek 12-04-2011 09:42 PM

I totally thought State was going to beat Wisconsin. They didn't.:(

I mean I figured we'd get a not great bowl selection, but I was was expecting the Meineke Car Care Bowl at least... I mean for awhile it was simply a joke that we'd have to go to that one, and then we got passed over for it. Womp. Thanks for being so nice about it though. And good luck! As bad as it would be for the Big 10 if UF won, I am pretty well conditioned at this point to root for any team facing OSU. ;)

No, it shows a bias towards Saban. The SEC has been decided. What is the point of replaying LSU v Alabama? LSU is the SEC champion. LSU is the SEC West Champion. In what way could Alabama be the National Champion just by beating LSU in one game? Oklahoma St is the Champion of another conference, so if they beat LSU in a NC championship setting, there would be none of these complications, though the AP would still likely split the title. Dumb.

Nope, the Cotton Bowl is still alive and well. It's just a non BCS bowl now.

AOEforme 12-07-2011 06:16 PM

Montee Ball was selected as a Heisman finalist! I'm so happy for him! He found out on his twenty-first birthday too, which just made that day more perfect.

I was reading SI today and this made me laugh:

"Mr. Mandel, I am new (legal) citizen from foreign country, learning English and American sport. Please explain me how team can be national champion but not conference or division champion. In my country thing like this do not happen.
-- Chartah Varhta, Akron, Ohio

I can't possibly explain it, but this may be the most insightful summation of the BCS I've ever seen."

"Baylor we are, and Baylor we will always be." My freshman year, our team went 4-8 and no one thought we had a chance. Everything has changed in these four short years, and I'm happy to have called myself a fan throughout it all. Sic 'em Bears and congratulations to RGIII!

Hey! That "rodent" from LSU is an amazing football player that no one expected to even be invited to the Heisman Awards. BTW, Honey Badgers are not rodents.
