I was at a birthday party for one of my friends last night and got to talking to a whole bunch of nervous mommies!!! All of their daughters leave in the next week or so for rush! Most to Texas schools, but a few out of staters including Georgia, Alabama, and one to Florida. There are girls from our local hs currently at Georgia and Alabama, so these moms feel a little bit assured that their girls will, at least, have a fair shot, but the girl going to Florida is ON HER OWN!!! Brave!!!
It was fun to listen to them talking about clothes and rounds and such. I'll let y'all know results when I hear, and if I get any good details, I'll pass them along.:) |

I am writing a rec for a girl from my hometown going through recruitment at Georgia. I'm excited and curious to see how a northern gal will fare at big southern recruitment! |
I have a guy friend whose daughter is going through recruitment at Univ. of Tennessee. She's a Kappa legacy. Last time I saw her she was 5 years old!

my daughter is going through rush at Southern Miss right now ... and I am so very nervous!! She got online last night to talk about it a little (against rules ughh) but I was happy she got the chance anyway! lol
One girl told her sorority XYZ girls are all backstabbers... (she knew this girl from her HS volleyball team from 2 years ago) and she even went so far as to have her friend tell her these girls are backstabbers too! Sorority XYZ is her #1 choice... and I am afraid I may not have stressed how important it is not to talk about other sororities during rush. So I told her these girls are probably just bitter because they got cut from XYZ and not to listen to them. I am so very nervous because she told me a Phi M was talking to her and explaining how tough it is to be a legacy and how much pressure there is to join your moms sorority but not to let that be the detirmining factor in her decision... to me it seemed she was trying to tell her they didnt want her???? IDK maybe, maybe not... ok I am rambling ... nervous mom here. |
Hang in there PhiMu88! This is one of the toughest weeks for a mom! Not knowing what is going on is so hard! With cellphones, IM, etc people are in instant contact with each other these days. Then along comes recruitment and we are thrown back to the dark ages when all we had were the dorm phones and talked to home once a week or so! It is hard to adjust...
Keep us posted on her results! |
Deep breaths phimu88! Good luck to your daughter! :)

Do I need to be a Statistician to figure this out? 1st let me say I hope I don't do or say anything on here to embarass my daughter. I have so many questions about what is going on. Can someone help me do the math? She is at Rush right now. She had to choose 5 out of 7 sororities that she wanted to go back to today. I don't have any idea if those same 5 would invite her to come back. This no cell phone rule is KILLING me because I usually talk to her 50 times a day, and of course she usually comes home at night. Can anyone tell me a little more about what happens next? She would never tell me anything that she is not supposed to tell so any clues from you all would be great.

There are no guarantees during recruitment, so the 5 GLOs your daughter chooses as the ones she wants to go back to may not be the ones she is invited back to (and it's possible for her to not get any invitations, but we hope that doesn't happen!).

Sorry . . . but you asked. ;)
The number of possible parties depends on where she is going through recruitment. In regard to Pref, generally it's 2 or 3 parties (this also depends on her university). Regarding your double-blind question, the PNMs know who invited them to parties, and the GLOs know who accepted their party invitations. Unless something is said at the parties (which I think is not allowed), neither should know the other's choices (there are vague ways of communicating how much a PNM likes a GLO and vice versa without breaking the rules). The actual bid matching process is kind of confusing to explain, so I won't try. However, the GLOs get the list of their NMs before the NMs find out where they got a bid. I can't imagine not being able to know any info--look how impatient we get for info in retro recruitment threads!!! Hang in there, momof3--we're rooting for your daughter to find her home away from home. :D |
Momof3,
First, Recruitment is a mutual selection, and as MSKKG said, there are no guarantees. Second, if you are use to talking to your daughter 50 times a day, someone needs a hobby. Thirdly, the number of parties and details change by campus. Fourthly, the search function is your friend on GC. Lastly, be there to support your daughter, but don't live vicariously. Take a deep breath, pour yourself a glass of wine and turn on the Olympics, because at this point, recruitment is out of your control. As you said, you don't want to embarrass your daughter. |

dorm phones hahaha I remember those! Funny how much things have changed so quickly... well I got a quick call ... she got invited back to her top 5 choices!! :) Tomorrow is skit and she has to choose 4 houses. She is confused and doesnt know who to cut out. She said she would try to figure it all out and really think about how she felt at each house. Today seriously felt like one of the longest days of my life! Tomorrow will probably be worse. I have my usual 3 pm tee time though so that may help! I will keep ya'll posted. One of her best friends was cut from 2 sororities today... one being Phi Mu ughhh ... I just dont want her to cut Phi Mu thinking that she and her friend have to join the same sorority. I dont care if she doesnt want to join Phi Mu for her own reasons, but not for something like that... Momof3 ... it sounds like our girls might both be at the same school, they certainly are on the same schedule and even have the same numbers to choose and cut hmmmmmm .... |
OK, I know this won't make Jill's list, but I was excited to hear from some friends of my daughter (I'll call her BabyFlamingo) who are at Oklahoma State. Today was bid day. 3 of her friends went ZTA, one went Gamma Phi, and one went KKG. BabyFlamingo will be participating in recruitment at another university later this month. I will start a thread for her when things are under way. By the way, quota at OState was 48.
