Do you guys think this could potentially shut down the entire greek system at SDSU? Or am I getting really out-there with my fears?

I mean we have enough problems with being pegged as a party school.. this just makes it even worse.

To be blatantly honest I think all of the shenanigans would be a whole lot worst if there wasn't a greek system. The system keeps it contained to some degree.

You can't say something cryptic and then not tell us! That is unfair. At least give a hint.

Hahaha. Or not. People will freak out.

Anyway. I remember when I first joined a sorority and my big sis told me about how at a meeting with some other sororities' sisters, this girl was talking about how she and several of her sisters would go into the bathroom before meeting to do coke.

:-/

It totally freaked out my little 18-year-old mind. Obviously I don't know if its true, but jeez, after this...

Please don't alude to stuff if it's just gossip. kthx! :)

Wow. You certainly know how to have pride and smear the reputation of your own GLO with comments like this.

DeltAlum 05-07-2008 09:22 AM

There will certainly be calls to shut down the system.

It could happen, I suppose.

I wonder how much effect this will have on other campuses across the country, and whether there will be other sweeping investigations elsewhere -- and dread what some might find.

I will never be sorry to say that I'm an Alum from Theta Chi at San Diego State. I publish the San Diego Area Theta Chi Alumni Association website, and take pictures at Founder's Day and other events like BBQ, tailgates, etc. Kind of like a historian who keeps getting elected :)

I don't pretend to speak for the Alumni Association, the Active Chapter, or the Grand Chapter - just myself. Because this board is mainly read by people in the Greek system, I would like to share my thoughts. One thing to know is that the San Diego alumni association had taken many painstaking efforts over the years to institute an alcohol-free house, zero-tolerance for underage drinking in any case, drug use, drug posession, hazing, and violation of risk-management and best-practices in operations according to National. This from a decades-long effort to prevent exactly this kind of thing from happening.

The undergraduates had the benefit of a very engaged alumni association - and I met more of the actives last month at our annual Founder's Day dinner. If these allegations turn out to be true (and it looks like the evidence may be overwhelming) - then I and probably a hundred other alumni are going to feel personally betrayed. The guys knew what we had been through, and what cost we'd endured to preserve our brotherhood and charter at SDSU.

Hell, we would have expelled them and reported them to the police if they were dealing or using drugs in the house; which is the major physical asset we posess.

I took down the alumni website tonight temporarily - as we have newsletters going back over 10 years with people's e-mails and professional updates- etc; and 60 years worth of scrapbook photos up there. Until I hear more, I'm assuming that it's over.

National Headquarters suspended the chapter today, the school also. We thought the trouble was going to be during the building-phase when the chapter would have to operate out of on-campus facilities. Re-colonization is a very tough road, and there is no guarantee the school or the Grand Chapter would even consider it. Putting myself in their shoes - I don't know I'd be receptive. Maybe 5 years - or more...

Sorry that this post is all from my perspective - and a little whiney. But this came as kind of a shock today - and it's like this chunk of my life has been ripped out by some punk kids that I extended a Helping Hand to...

Rick;
Thank you for your thoughts and comments.
And IMVHO, this board is open to all those initiated into a GLO.
Perhaps I now have to add: And in good standing.:o:(

One other thing to remember is that there are a lot of Alumni Association and Athletic Foundation supporters who also run and support their chapter's Alumni Associations who lobby strongly for them. If they make the "few bad apples" case, and fully support efforts for rooting it out - then I think the Greek System at SDSU will be the stronger for it.

Good question. I guess my answer is "I hope not".

I may have missed something. Has there been any comment that the groups were acting together as an organized conspiracy or were they their own "businesses" with similar product?

From what I have seen posted on GC, seem as if TPTB are starting to not only look at RM issues harder but acting on them as well.

I agree with your thoughts DA, more is coming down the road.

Especially once they dump the kid's cell phone who sent out the "mass text message". Won't be hard to find every one of his "regulars".

I don't blame you at all, Rick, and I really feel for you and your fellow alums. I would feel the exact same way.

I recall one of the articles saying the connection's been made with some over-the-border "cartels" who were the initial major suppliers, and then some of the selling was done in "resale quantities" to other students, making another level of suppliers and pushers on campus.

96 arrested in San Diego State drug bust

SAN DIEGO -- The undercover officers started to appear at San Diego State fraternity parties about six months ago.

They dressed like students, complained about their parents and professors, and talked freely and knowingly of things of great interest on campus: music, sex and drugs.
Soon they were accepted, with no questions asked. They were spotted at student hangouts on and off campus. They swapped cellphone numbers with other partygoers. They text-messaged their newfound friends.

The real students appeared to accept the pretend ones -- most but not all of whom were men. On a campus of 34,000 students, blending into the crowd was not difficult. Neither was collecting evidence of drug dealing and drug use.

On Tuesday, authorities announced that 96 young men -- including 75 students -- had been arrested on a variety of drug charges as a result of Operation Sudden Fall, which infiltrated seven fraternities on Fraternity Row and Fraternity Circle. Officials said the name of the operation referred to the prospect of sudden death from drug usage......

.....Although the investigation was widely praised in San Diego, the nationwide group Drug Policy Alliance blasted it as "sensationalistic" and futile. The group believes in the decriminalization of marijuana and favors increased drug education and treatment over mass arrests.

"College students on any campus in this country are easy pickings," said Margaret Dooley-Sammuli, the group's deputy state director for Southern California. "But these types of arrests are not the best use of the DEA's resources. They should be targeting large-scale traffickers and distributors."

According to the DEA, the seized evidence included 4 pounds of cocaine, 50 pounds of marijuana, 48 hydroponic marijuana plants, 350 Ecstasy pills, 30 vials of hash oil, methamphetamine, psilocybin (mushrooms), various illicit prescription drugs, a shotgun, three semiautomatic pistols, three brass knuckles and $60,000 in cash.

Officials put the value of the seized drugs at more than $100,000. They said the marijuana was high-grade and probably grown locally because marijuana smuggled from Mexico is usually of a lower quality.........

And the comment section is a read unto itself.
