We've got one like this out on the family ranch. This is no girly sorostitute car. 1979 Land Rover Defender. Sits 9 people.

edit: There's a newer version of it and it's not as manly, but pretty close.

What's the big deal in the south about "croakies"? Those things, or things just like them, have been around since the 80s or so, and no one I know would call them preppy or anything. In fact, a lot of people up here in the northwest, and people in California, use them while doing outdoor activities like hiking or playing beach volleyball. It's just interesting to me that they're seen as preppy in the south.

I've never thought of them as preppy. Just convenient to hold your sunglasses.

Also, you're a douchebag if you own Croakies and don't fish or ski.

The way they're used is what differentiates them.

We use croakies to hold onto expensive sunglasses when we're out sailing or fishing in the Gulf/Atlantic or even at the pond at home. Even then, outdoorsy stuff is very Southern preppy...look at the brands..Carhart, Patagonia, North Face, Kavu, etc, etc.

Quoted for truth.

It's too common nowadays though.

I sail and use "croakies" - but all of us on the boat quickly fashion them out of electrical tape and attach the ends to our glasses. Not very fratty (not that I'd give a rat's @ss), but certainly practical after losing a few pairs of expensive sunglasses overboard.

Ok, the north-south, dressy/not dressy for football games differentiations I think we've all gotten to understand the gulf of experience that exists.

But are we now really going to "tier" which outdoor activities are better than others? So only fishing and skiing count? And is that snow skiing or water skiing? Can someone who's kayaking down the rapids in WV wear croakies and not be a douchebag? What about hiking/backpacking in the Appalachians?

Can you only be on a boat with a fishing pole or a ski lift to wear croakies and not be a douche?

They're very popular for skiing out here. And Seattle is boating heaven, so spare me the talk about water sports, too. And you think people on the west coast don't wear designer sunglasses? I'm not sure why you think the way you use croakies is different, unless you're referring to the guy in the photo above that's wearing it along with his button-down and tie. I don't see that very much up here, I guess.

that's funny :)

I don't get what the deal is with croakies either - give me a break, they are a device to keep you from losing sunglasses. Buying designer croakies like VV is STUPID. They give them away free at events! But, that might not be fratty ;)

And to think that I was always taught that those who truly have don't need to constantly remind and rank.

Why, yes. It is so very true. Bless their hearts.

Too bad I traded the ML500 for that British piece of crap.

SEC Domination... Mercedes MLs are made in Alabama

More than that, such action is bad form as is belittling others based on their class status. The American version of noblesse oblige.

Carhartts are SOUTHERN PREPPY? I can't wait to tell all the rednecks in my life that they've been fashion plates and trendsetters ahead of their time for Southern Preppy Frattiness all throughout the Pacific Northwest, the Rockies, and Alaska.

Here's just one of their men's clothing options

http://carharttimages.carhartt.com//...id=250&hei=250

I wonder if women will wear these fleece lined bib overalls with leg snaps to SEC rush instead of Lilly Pulitzer sun dresses? They'd look fierce with some pearls.

http://carharttimages.carhartt.com//...id=250&hei=250

That seriously made my day, unintentionally of course.

DSTCHAOS 04-02-2008 09:23 PM

With exception for the $72 flame resistant relaxed fit jeans, it's pretty inexpensive. None of the stuff looks "Southern preppy."

These guys will turn anything into a status symbol and a sign of "frattiness" and "Southern preppy."
