That was actually an area that was "hightlighted" to me when I took a tour there. They seemed super proud to not have a strong greek system. (they being UCSC) I found that a bit strange that it was a point mentioned on the tour.

Are there any Cal Greeks here? I've searched the board and I haven't found any :(

Beach views
 

Many California campuses have great beach views. I am biased, but I think that UCSB's ocean views are beyond compare! The best views are from the 8th floor of the library, in my opinion. Any other UCSB grads or students out there? (the view from the 8th floor inspired my son, who had previously had his heart set on attending UCLA, change his mind. Now he wants to be gaucho, like his mom!:):):)....Dad is a bruin::p

UGH that disgusts me! I seriously want to look into that. That's so wrong. I'm sure it was the individual tour guide who said that, and it wasn't part of their training.

This is a place with a banana slug (or some like-sounding icky bug) as a mascot, the school thinks its clever, and no football team.

Another school where Greeks have almost totally fallen off the radar: Humboldt State, only a few houses left.
When I was looking at grad schools and for a student life activities internship I did a search within the university's website on Greek life. What came up was stunning. Several houses used to be there, it had a very active system, but wild parties and the like led the school and the city to basically shut the door.

It had to be just the individual tour guide who said that. I was kinda shocked at the crappiness of that statement. She said it when she saw some girls wearing their letters leaving the little student area with the student store and places to eat.

As in Cal Greeks, are you talking Berkeley or California in particular?

Ha, too bad that tour wasn't last week! I saw a tour last week go by all of the tabling for spring recruitment. That tour guide couldn't have said that amidst that scene!

I am not in a sorority just yet, but CSU, Stanislaus only has 2 national sororities and i think about 3 national fraternities and of course some locals. the greek life here is not at strong as other schools but i know it is huge at UC, Santa Barbara and I think CSU, Fullerton. Also, after visiting Chico and Fresno State, I would say the greek life is really good there. To be honest, I am really contemplating transferring to a school with a good greek system.

I attend Fresno State and we have six national sororites and about 9 national Fraternities. Being Greek makes school so much more enjoyable. Plus you are more involved. Chico's Greek community isn't as big as it used to be. My best friend goes there and they seem to be much more seperate. They don't really have that many socials or anything.

I currently attend San Jose State University and am a part of Sigma Pi (Beta Eta Chapter). The greek system is not bad, but they aren't as big as other schools that I've seen. There are about 8 NIC's and 5 NPHC.

At Berkeley we have a pretty good greek life! About 12% of the students here are greek... which isn't very high, but it's not bad. We have 12 Panhellenic sororities, 36 IFC fraternities, 9 National Pan-Hellenic fraternities and sororities, and 8 Cultural fraternities and sororities. Then we have a bunch of service/professional fraternities and sororities. There isn't really any anti-Greek feeling on campus, but in my area at least, we don't grow up thinking that going to college and rushing for a sorority go hand in hand. I didn't even know much about greek life at all until I came to college.

I know that at one point (around the 60's-70's) Berkeley's sororities really suffered in membership because at the time, it was really cool to be anti-establishment and sororities were seen as something to be avoided. But membership is going strong now.

Also, most of my California high school friends who went to other colleges went greek (one is a Kappa Kappa Gamma!).

I need to check out the campus there. I just have not really taken the BART up to that neck of the woods :)
