Yeah, that is a common misconception. I'm pretty sure that the Old Row fraternities and sororities have to go about a process to be considered an "Old Row" house. Somone can correct me.....but I'm pretty sure that is how some friends at Alabama described it.

 I read somewhere that the "Old Row" fraternities and sororities were labled as such by the whole school; had functions together called "Old Row" and even had "Old Row" specific T-Shirts.

From what little I understand, it's basically a group that pays into a fund for a big party or two. It may also have something to do with the infamous "Machine," which doesn't exist. (Yeah, right).

macallan25 05-20-2007 10:35 PM

Yeah that is basically what I heard.......and I think they get t-shirts or something as well.

This is true! Each function gets a t-shirt. It's one huge band party once a year, if I remember right. I think they pay extra dues to fund the partay.

Who are the "old row" fraternities and sororities? I've heard the term tossed around a lot, but have never really seen a list. (The whole concept of that totally fascinates me...so different from most other campuses!)

::thinks hard for a moment::

Sororities:

*KD
*DDD
*AGD
KKG
Phi Mu
A Chi O
Chi O

* = First Circle sororities. They have their own functions as well.

Fraternities:

DKE
SAE
Sigma Nu
KA
FIJI (but they go by Phi Gam at UA; they hate to be called FIJI)
Beta

susan314 05-27-2007 11:45 PM

Interesting. Thanks for the list.

(Fascinating that not only is there a group of sororities, but also a group within the group. So different from what I've seen on any campus I've worked with.)

I was under the impression that the Phi Gamma Delta chapter at the University of Alabama wasn't allowed to use the moniker FIJI. Correct me if I'm wrong.

and kkgphib could you share you those links with me as well, I'm a nut for Alabama greek life.

Not allowed by who? The school? It's a national nickname.

Was that maybe the chapter that's been talked about that disaffiliated with National, but still uses Phi Gamma Delta as their letters? I'm confused as well.

sebeutaw 06-03-2007 12:55 PM

They are affliated with the nationals but just do not like FIJI. They prefer Phi Gam. My brother and father are members of the chapter. They are the Theta chapter and were featured last year in the magazine for making some major milestone in years (cant remember). Its them and I know some Phi gams from UGA that also prefer Phigam over FIJI.
Sidenote the only time i have ever heard them use FIJI is the annual FIJI Island party in the spring....

Yes, he's correct. They are a really strong chapter but just prefer to go by the traditional Greek letters.
