You were right and I was wrong. Quota at MSU was 50 according to the Student Affairs Office. Sorry..

It's sad but not suprising. It's been that way for as long as I can remember. Some women just don't match even if quota additions are done. (Quota additions can only be a certain % of Quota. I don't have my Green Book so I can't state what that % is supposed to be.) It hurts like hell and everyone feels bad but it happens. I know that Angie (Assistant GA) has been working very hard to minimize it but it's difficult.

The other side is that while the chapters love getting the NMs, several of them feel that they are large enough. I am not starting a debate about the quality of sisterhood of a 200(+) member chapter. There are just other logistics that go into it all.

Personally, I haven't heard from my neighbor yet who was going though. She stopped talking to her mom midway through because she was driving her crazy. ;) Neighbor didn't stop talking to her dad though and he said that she was invited to pref by her two favorites!

Just a note: there are no greek houses on the Horseshoe. The Horseshoe is the historic part of campus and the housing there is mostly for Honors College students. You mean Greek Village. I don't know about spaces being available but someone at SC can chime in if there are any left.

aopirose, Thank you for that helpful background. My initial reaction was probably partly due to an awareness that other campuses do things differently. For instance, the University of Kansas -- admittedly not as competitive as most SEC schools, but by no means totally laid back -- explains on one of its Greek life pages

"Although the Panhellenic Association would love to be able to guarantee every prospective member a place in a chapter, there is no guarantee in the first three rounds of recruitment that a prospective member’s chapter rankings will match with the chapters’ “lists.” However, we can guarantee a prospective member a spot in a chapter during the final round, Preference Round. We have a system of Maximizing Your Options that is offered to every prospective member that is still in the process on this day. This means that if a prospective member ranks all of the chapters that she attended on Preference Round, she is guaranteed a spot in one of those chapters. For example, if she attends three Preference Round Events and lists all three chapters, she will be guaranteed a place in one of those chapters. If she attends two events and lists both chapters, she will be in one of the two chapters. If she attends one chapter and puts that one chapter on her Preference Card then she WILL be in that chapter. However, this does not mean that she will automatically receive her first choice in all cases. If a prospective member attends three chapters and only ranks two of them on her Preference Card, she is not guaranteed a spot in any of the chapters."

So I have to recognize that LSU's Panhellenic has chosen what seems right for them, just as other Panhellenics (and the University of Kansas is not the only school with a Maximizing Your Options policy) may take a different route.

My friend'd little sister that was going through at UT-Knoxville ended up going Phi Mu and she is so excited. I am excited for her & for Phi Mu because she is an awesome girl!

I was in Columbia a couple of weeks ago and finally got to see the new Greek Village in person. All of the houses are so beautiful!

BrownEyedGirl - there was one house that was a bit bigger than all of the others but did not have letters on it yet. It is still under construction. Do you know what it is? I think it was next to DZ.

I love the rainbow over the Kappa house! That was taken prior to landscaping--the yard is beautiful now. Your secret is safe with me, BrownEyedGirl!

Actually, the map is a little outdated/incorrect. The Chi Psi's have built on the other side of the DZ house. The Chi Psi's are where the b'ball court is on the map. Lambda Chi Alpha hasn't started building yet and I don't know what their plans are, so the house shown on the map is not there! I'm not sure of the "pecking order" or even if there are any lots left. PKTKKG would be able to give you better info.

OOPS!! I always seem to confuse Univ. of Southern CA with Univ. of South Carolina - my bad!

The photos are WONDERFUL!!! Do you have one of the ADPi house, by any chance? One of our GC sisters collects photos of them!

Maybe, in LSUs case, it is time to expand on the Soroity level?

If there are that many women cut, they cannot all be so bad as not to be asked to join. These numbers could supprt a total New Soroity. There are to many Great Soroitys not to have another on Campus.

While I do not have figures to back me, it seems from reading so many posts, that greek Figures for Recruitment are on a slow but steady climb, system wide.:)

This is inspite of rising costs at Colleges, and the economy.

It also seems that more and more schools are coming to the realization that Greeks are an intregal part of the College Scene!

Especially when so many Grads and Donors to the College are Greeks!:cool:

i agree with this policy. I think if a PNM goes to all the preference parties she's allowed to or gets invited to if not the maximum, and lists them on her bid card, they should not be denied a bid. Just my opinion.

Yeah, one of the Chi Psi's at USC explained it to me... apparently there are some chapters that are so strict about it they call themselves "lodgers." Interesting, though, considering their construction sign had a big "Chi Psi" on it. Their house is definitely ENORMOUS, though. Rumor has it they had so much money from alumni (Chi Psi is the oldest fraternity on campus, believe it or not) that they helped SAE fund their house. I don't know how much of that is true, but it came from a Chi Psi, so I would assume it is.
