1. had problems buying a house in a black neighborhood? Oops sorry, you would never live next to such hoodlums.
My parents could NOT buy a house in an area of my town when my brother and I were infants.. and why? Because the current owner was not caucasian and TOLD THEM that he didn't want his house going to some "white uppity people". That was the only part of town that they could afford at the time that wasn't section 8 housing. So guess what IT DOES HAPPEN!
2. been followed around the store by a black person?
I ended up growing up in a prodominetly black neighborhood. All of the business were owned and operated by african americans and my friends were not white. I still remember being told not to go into the drugstore on the corner by my friends cause I wasn't welcome to shop for candy there. They had to take my money and buy some for me. The woman who owned the store taunted those kids for even being my friend.


Now, I know it goes both ways, believe my I do. I have family in Arkansas where there is segragated schooling still (YES IT IS TRUE!) AndI have seen to many ignorant people say things, but you are just as ignorant if you think that someone that is not white cannot be racist.
All it takes is education so that hopefully all of our children won't be.

I am of Irish and American Indian decent. If you look at me you think that I am just white. My great great grandfather helped work the railroads and was treated worse than most could imagine. He was murdered by those he worked for because he asked for a raise to help his growing family. The could off him, not get in trouble and hire someone else instead of giving him a nickel an hour raise. My great grandmother was Cherokee Indian. Her family was part of the trail of tears. She couldn't even vote.
I do not blame an entire race for this, although the leaders were of European decent probably (how should I know!) and I do not blame the government and say I need retribution. I am me... all of me. I prove my worth every day with the choices I make in my life. I hope upon my judgement day when I stand before the lord God he sees me as Sarah, not a caucasian whose ancestors had problems. They aren't me and I am not them. I didn't suffer, they did. It takes a bigger person to forgive someone for something than to hold grudge.

it was, wasn't it? I was trying to remember because I didn't think everything I'd written was in the posted thread...but I couldn't remember the thread...it was deleted? That sucks...it should have gone into the Archives as the greatest day in GC history. Don't you love arguing stimulating topics? So frequently anything that requires much thought on here goes dead in a day....while fun game has nearly 1,000 posts right now. I sit here at work and just hope something intertesting will survive, but it doesn't.

no Honeykiss, i was not directing it towards you, but neicy. I think you have made some very valid and interesting points. I hope I did not offend you. I was just very aggravated when I read that post asking those questions. I remember the pain of not getting my hair done with my friends growing up because they didn't do white girls hair. I just wanted to have cute hair like my friends!! Remembering that and reading that post really rubbed me wrong.


On another note. I showed this thread to my friends, two that are not caucasians (one is hispanic american, the other is african american) and they had to laugh because they said that they know members of their own ethnicities that are racists... it isn't just a white/black thing.

Actually, neicy, in my city, since it is a city, not some podunk town where just anyone can do hair and nails, you have to be LICENSED. You have to be BOARD CERTIFIED and that means you have to learn to cut any type of hair. But, those women had no problem doing my hair in the privacy of their own homes, just in their place of business. And when you were eight could you do your own hair? If so you could have been a hairdresser at twelve I am sure!
So, I am sure they were not just keen on doing black women's hair, because there were many times they did my hair IN THEIR HOMES ONLY. They didn't want me in their business because it looked bad.

This thread is so interesting. It's good to have something really open your eyes and wake you up.
Recently I've been reading books about political correctness and free speech on campus, and this racism issue was brought up.

I admit that I believe non-whites can be racist, even to their own race, but if Neicy and others do not feel the term racist should be applied to blacks, then what is the big deal? is calling someone prejudiced less meaningful than calling them racist?

It hurts to think the way people have treated others in the past. Just yesterday I saw a story on a show Culture-shock (Canadian). It visited this small town to explore a story about slavery. Supposedly there was a community of about 200 slaves that lived there....
this is notable for 2 reasons 1) Canadians learn very little about slavery other than it was an American thing(but it wasn't, it happened here too) 2) there is an unmarked [supposed] burial site for many of those former slaves referred to as N*##@r Rock (it amazed me how easily they could say that word) which some would like to become a memorial

Anyway, the point is that many ppl of all races/cultures do not accept things that have been done in the past, but more and more are trying to understand and find out their truth.

Sure reverse-discrimination occurs as in the leading story, but discrimination against minorities is still much more prevalent in our societies.

I'm sorry if i seem to be jumping all over the place, there is just so many ideas brought up by this.

Okay, I can agree to disagree, Neicy. Obviously someone not giving me the same graces as another person because of the color of my skin is not racist to you. Perhaps, it is just prejudist, either way I agree to disagree.
