For what it's worth, there are people on both sides of the spectrum. Some glare at skinny people others glare at overweight people. As stated some people are ridiculous to thinner people. One time I remember eating an ice cream cone with a friend. Someone walked by and commented that we were just going to throw them up later anyway. Other times there are people who are ridiculous to overweight people. Others look at an overweight person and actually do comment on their food. I had a coworker when I worked at a coffee shop who would give sugar free/non fat milk to anyone she determined was over weight.

Really what we need is to address body image, obesity, and eating disorders. All three are a problem. We need to teach healthy eating and how to be confident with who you are.

And back to the thread at hand...

Really, you are old enough to be in college and haven't figured out that certain brands are in style while others are not. Labels shouldn't mean anything, but in fashion they do. I doubt that every piece of clothing you wear needs to be designer. Pepper in a few of these brands amongst regular polos and solid tees. BTW, this is the wrong thread for this discussion.

Lol i guess I'm not really into fashion. One of my brothers finally told me the reason: its to look like the well-dressed classy better man we all strive to become one day. Its also to make first impressions, good lasting impressions. Thanks I'll make sure to pepper some into my wardrobe. Lol

So sick of hearing this!

Ditto to the skinny bashing. Someone once told me I looked like an "anorexic monkey," when in fact I'm just naturally thin.

Another thing I'm sick of hearing: (upon learning I'm a nursing student) With your grades, why don't you want to be a doctor?

Ah, totally agree! I hate when people act like being a doctor is the ultimate end goal for all science and healthcare learning, any anything else is just a step down.
"Oh, I thought you were pre-med because of your major." I practically hear the disappointment trumpet when people find out I'm going for a Masters or PhD and not an MD. It's not that I couldn't be a medical doctor, it's just not what I want to do, and I'm sure many nurses are the same way.
Related to that: "Are you going to do cancer research?"
No. I'm going to study plant problems, not people problems, because that's what I find more interesting. Cancer is not the only important field of research in the world.

This.
Always the disappointment when finding out that I don't want to be a therapist or clinical psychologist, but am getting my Masters in psychology. Like it's the only road to take upon graduation.

Be happy as a woman that it has gotten to this point. I can't tell you how many times as a physician I have been called a nurse even after I have introduced myself as the patient's physician. People naturally assumed that if you were female you weren't the doctor. That is going away. It's a good thing, so take the annoying, "Oh you're so smart; you're not pre-med?" with it. It is a step in the right direction for women.

In my opinion, it will be hard to achieve this goal with the way-past its expiration date Polo and with Vineyard Vines.

And to tie this back into this thread:

I'm tired of the word "classy," use of which is almost always anything but classy. And really, it's a word men should never use.

At the moment, the phrase "oooohhh, you have the BAD kind of diabetes".
I never knew there was a "good" kind?

I used to get the "Oh you're so smart; you're not pre-med?" all the time.

My response was "Nope. I'll make the drugs - you can push 'em."

I like to say "People are still going to call me 'Dr. [GeorgiaGreek],' but nobody will ask me to examine their weird rash or suspicious mole."

christiangirl 11-12-2012 05:19 PM

"Are you ok?"

NO. If my face said anything close to "I'm ok," you wouldn't be staring at me with startled pity. I'm sick. I'm exhausted. I hurt everywhere. Stop asking if I'm ok!

"States have started petitions to secede from the United States.."

WHAT?! I am Republican and was upset about the election, but this is just ridiculous. We need to come together as a country, not try to do silly things like this.

^^^^Even better than my all-time fave "I'm moving to Canada."

YES. If you're opposed to universal health care, that is the PERFECT place for you.
