It's sort of cute that chapters have their own local symbol, but to stick true to Sigma we all are proud of our symbol the Sailboat and that is our 'only' symbol.
This is the same for Alpha Chi Omega & our symbol, the lyre. Traditions are very hard to break, though, for many chapters - it is hard to find a huggable, cute lyre to give on bid day, big/lil night, etc. Heck, it is hard to find ANY lyre's that aren't connected with Christmas!

Also, the angel is not and has not been a symbol of AXO. Many people assume that the angel is associated with us, because so many of them are holding lyres!

the symbol on some campuses (campi) is the wart hog but on
others it is the pangolin. Recently, though, the Tasmanian
debbil has emerged

Quite a random thought:
A Christmas ornament with an angel holding a lyre would be a really nice gift for a mother with one Pi Phi daughter and one AXO daughter.

As I said, it's quite a random thought :)

I had a question for the ASA's out there. I know some chapters use the ladybug only, some use Raggedy Ann only, some use both. Are they both officially national or is it sort of like an assumed thing or an adopted thing (sort of how the Panda for AOII and the turtle for DZ is the "unofficial" yet everyone uses it- I have actually heard many variations on this info as well, please school me if I am wrong).
Ladybugs and Raggedy Ann are both unofficial. Most chapters use ladybugs, but not all use Raggedy Ann for the same reason as DG - copyright laws. There aren't any ladybugs on our website either. Our official symbols are the Crown, Palm Tree, Phoenix & Star.

we use pandas :-) random, but cute!

Or for Carnation when she finally gets an AXO into the fold!! :D Always pushing my agenda, you know! ;)

On that note... I thought I remember reading/hearing somewhere that Pi Phi never officially had an angel - just the arrow. But I can't remember my own name most days :o

No, dangit!! I get a Pi Phi first, then I can have an Alpha Chi!;)

I do know an elderly Pi Phi in town who has an Alpha Chi daughter my age, I could get one for her. Although the granddaughter will rush in the fall and is likely to pledge a third group.

I've read in Pi Phi information that the angel isn't official but I doubt that anyone will try to suppress it. It's not like you can find a ton of cute arrows around--an arrow's an arrow!

Today we sometimes use a goat (or a ram if we can't find an appropriate image on greek101 or whatever) to designate our worst sports team. We generally have a Team A, Team B, and...The Goats.

At West Point the cadet who graduates last in the class is called the Goat (named after their archrival's mascot).:)

An old joke...

Thanks for clearing that up about the mascots. I often wonder why our official symbols aren't known more. For instance, ZTA is known pretty much for having the crown, yet we are not. When I was initiated I received a lot of Palm Tree stuff, however the palm decor is pretty big now. I wonder how our unoffical mascots got started with ASA. Anyone know?
