This was my first recruitment on the advisor side and also my first recruitment at IU, so I'm not sure what is completely "normal" for their recruitment. But yes, I think some of her placement numbers are a bit low.

Not my chapter, obviously, but from counting heads in Phi Mu's pictures, looks like they took ~45

ladybug12 01-11-2012 03:07 PM

50 for Phi Mu

APhi4Ever 01-11-2012 03:11 PM

Does anyone know how many Alpha Phi took?

Totally possible that several houses took only in the 30s range given the small sizes of several houses on that campus. Very happy for TPA--great job, ladies!

Is it common at IU for girls to have full schedules all the way through and still not get a bid?

Supposedly this happened to a girl on my friend's floor and it makes me scared since I'm going there next year and want to rush

KSUViolet06 01-16-2012 10:19 PM

Are you sure that this actually happened? You said "supposedly."

I say this just because sometimes those things go around as rumors just to freak people out.

Last year (winter 2011) a girl I know from my city did go through recruitment at IU and she went to three preferences and did not receive a bid. So I know it can happen. She had 12 chapters at 14 party, 7 at 8 party and three on preference.

With RFM, I would think it could statistically happen if a woman was going to three chapters with similar return rates and be near the bottom of all three lists who were allowed to invite a higher percentage of PNMs back. The three my girl went to did have similar return rates when I was at IU, so I assumed they might be similar now.

Now do I think this is norm, no. But it could happen and has in a handful of situations. I still believe that if a women ranks her chapters carefully and keeps an open mind, she can have a successful recruitment at Indiana.

i don't think my friend would make it up...she said the girl had a full list every day but still didn't get a bid and i guess was pretty upset and cried to my friend about it

Also ive heard of girls getting cut by every house before 3 party

Is IU really that competitive??? cause these stories make me super nervous

Yes, it is really that competitive. That's why you need to KEEP AN OPEN MIND.

Do a search here on GC about IU and bed quota. That will give you an idea of why it's considered competitive. Quota is the number of girls that each chapter can give bids to during recruitment. At almost all colleges, quota is figured by dividing the number of women eligible to receive bid by the number of chapters. Therefore if there are 250 women and 10 chapters, each chapter can give 25 bids. IU does not operate that way and there are multiple threads on here which explain it.

In one word: yes. Not to be offensive, but put your big girl pants on and realize that it's not always rainbows and butterflies and participation trophies. Not everyone gets bids. Keep an open mind, and your chances are better.

And there IS expansion, both now and upcoming at IU so there will continue to be more opportunities, although not in the traditional IU style. Open mind Open mind Open mind.
