Exactly. I'm not going to lie and say that NOTHING was ever said about other sororities. But I had never heard of songs being created for the sole purpose of bashing another chapter.

Idiot girls RECORDED IT, and put it on the internet. Once again, I hope they do face disciplinary action!

I completely agree. To what extent they should be disciplined, I'm not sure. But this was ridiculously stupid, and if nothing else, they probably embarrassed at least a few of their chapter sisters. That alone would make me think twice about posting something online for the world to see.

It's like the people who post pictures of themselves smoking pot (or worse) on Facebook. Who are you trying to impress?

I'm probably the most sarcastic, doesn't-take-many-things-too-seriously kind of person, but I wouldn't spend my time coming up with a song such as this. I think I would have rather put that time to good use and actually thought of ways to get those PNMs that everyone is after.

And if a few girls in my chapter decided together, late on a Wednesday night, when they had nothing better to do, that they wanted to write a song like this about another sorority, and they had an inside joke going that no one else knew about... that's fine. But if they posted it online, I would be mortified. And I would definitely want to do something to show them that it's the wrong thing to do.

Write a silly song with friends = fine.

Write a silly song and record the performance of it = possibly still harmless.

Write a silly song, record the performance of it and post it online = stupid and asking for trouble.

Write a silly song, most of which was recorded in the front yard of the sorority house, the other parts being taped in front of other chapters' houses, as they were insulted and flicked off = there are no words for how dumb and disrespecful that is.

We have sarcastic girls, we just never had these types of songs. I don't think we'd even have what I'd consider a "rival" sorority, we know we're competing, but we do our own things. I'm not criticizing those who do have these songs because that is their campus culture. I'm simply unfamiliar with them because we never had them. While people may say mean things once in a while on my campus, they'd never write and produce a full-fledged song about it. I don't think we could get people on our campus to join if we did. The local girls would see us as petty and not want to go greek at all. But that is just my particular campus. Whatever works on others' campuses is what works.

We wrote lyrics to songs that mentioned other orgs on campus for Greek Week, etc. but I can't imagine dancing in front of another org's house and flipping it off, etc. - let alone videotape it AND post it online! Definitely crossed the line. You can be funny and mention other groups in a song but outright cursing and flipping off their house is just... WOW. I'd be surprised if their national office hasn't at least spoken with the chapter's EC by now...

Is it a fact that the ORIGINAL video (without the subtitles) was posted online by the DGs at UF?

I've read nothing that suggests that, but somebody can correct me if they know this to be the case.

You're right that it hasn't been said whether or not they themselves posted the original video. However, they had to have sent it to someone (not just recorded it) or at least weren't very careful with the flash drive/CD/whatever the video was saved on....

I agree with those who say most chapters have somewhat disparaging ditties about other groups. It's just one of those childish parts of the competitiveness of a Greek system. It's the classic "We're better than you" mentality.

Not knowing what to expect, I started watching the video before it was taken down and had to scramble to hit the pause button because my young son was in the room. The extremely crude language is a far bigger issue than the making a typical anti-other sororities song IMO.

No org, especially on the I/Natl level, wants to be identified with that sort of language or behavior. Once something is posted on the internet for the world to see, it becomes a reflection of I/Natl. Most, if not all GLO's have internet policies that specify internet postings should reflect positively on the members and I/natl and not be obscene. I'm not saying all sorority girls are Miss Prim 'n Proper, but this crossed the line big time.

If anyone would have referred to me as a "baby [fill in the mascot here]" when I was a pledge I think I would have barfed right on their shoes.
Bravo. I thought I was the only person who hated this trend.

I feel sorry for the chapter's executive board who are likely dealing with the school and their national office over this. Merry Christmas to them...

Blue Skies 12-22-2009 12:41 PM

I think that the video's hilarious, but for heaven's sake, don't these girls know how to keep something behind the scenes? What else can't they keep secret?

I think that it's completely pathetic that it made it out onto the web for everyone to see. It's not that hard to keep certain things reasonably private.

I'll second that!

Realistically, what do y'all feel might be - and not should be - the punishment (if any) for the women responsible for the video?

I call for a writ of "girls will be girls" and a slap on the wrist.

An apology for bad taste would be appropriate.

No makeup or fake bake at fraternity parties/bars for a month. Get Medieval!!

If they do get terminated, I guess they'll find out if they're popular for themselves or popular because of the sorority they're in. Won't that be a fun afterschool special for everyone?
