I'm happy for Penn State! I've always liked them among Big 10 teams for some reason. I think it would be fun if Penn State and Texas got a National Champion matchup! :)

Man, Texas/Oklahoma was a pretty exciting game today. So glad we stuck it out! Gotta admit I am a bit worried about Texas Tech next week....

breathesgelatin 10-26-2008 01:15 AM

OK, so what happens if Texas, Alabama, and Penn State all go undefeated???

This isn't even considering the possibility of some other smaller teams going undefeated...

Kevin 10-26-2008 11:18 AM

Penn State's schedule is *by far* the weakest -- and they don't even have to play a conference championship game.

Heck.. the MAC compares favorably to the Big 10 this year.

IMHO, the voters would put Texas and Bama in ahead of Penn State, and for that matter, maybe even a 1-loss team from the Big XII or SEC should go ahead of PSU.

CrackerBarrel 10-26-2008 11:47 AM

I think Penn State has punched their ticket to the NC game now, I hope Iowa or MSU can knock them off, but I doubt it. I think Texas is a lot more likely to lose, maybe TTech this weekend, then TTech still has OU. And I like the east champ from the SEC (GA/FL winner) over Bama in the SECCG. So I would guess it comes down to whether a 1 loss Texas or a 1 loss GA/FL team goes to the championship. I think the SEC team since they would have lost earlier.

And either Texas, Florida, or Georgia would smear Penn State all over the floor. Watch PSU's game then watch the Florida/Kentucky game from yesterday, the speed difference is ridiculous.

I hope to god that we've learned our lesson about putting Big 10 teams in the BCS championship game.

Wow, whole lotta haters with southern drawls in this thread talking smack. Penn State can't control how competitive the other teams in their conference are playing year-to-year, but it's not like they've never competed against rival conferences and gotten a taste of the SEC/Big 12 "mojo". Their bowl appearances just since '99:

Outback Bowl, Jan. 1, 1999 vs. Kentucky Wildcats (SEC), PSU 26 KU 14
Alamo Bowl, Dec. 28, 1999 vs. Texas A&M (Big 12), PSU 24 A&M 0
Capital One Bowl, Jan. 1, 2003 vs. Auburn (SEC), PSU 9 Auburn 13
Orange Bowl, Jan. 3, 2006 vs. Florida State (ACC *cough*), PSU 26 FSU 23
Outback Bowl, Jan. 1, 2007 vs. Tennessee (SEC), PSU 20 Tenn 10

When Penn State's at the top of its game, I'd put them up against any team in the country. Especially if they're playing for JoePa's last season, they'll kill themselves to bring that man a win.

Season's not over, who knows who will end up where, I'll be happy if they at least just give JoePa the Big 10 Title. But if they earn the BCS slot, believe that they won't fear the competition. You all don't get to enjoy the beauty of a snowy winter day down there, we'll be happy to bring the white out down and give you a little taste of holiday cheer. :)

I remember that Outback Bowl against Tennessee. Everyone was talking about Southern Speed before that game but we won it with Northern Power and beat them down into submission.

Nothing is guaranteed but I like PSU's chances against the SEC.

Tennessee isn't a fast team, so people were just picking up on the talk left over from Florida/OSU the year before. Southern speed refers to the Florida schools, Georgia and LSU more than anywhere else.

And it's just that I think that the big SEC schools (this year Bama, UGA and UF) have a slightly better defense than OSU and offenses leaps and bounds ahead of the Buckeyes. It would take in the high 30's to mid 40's for PSU to beat any of those three teams and I've seen nothing that would indicate that they could score more than about 17 on anyone with a pulse.

Penn State will choke.

Pat Devlin should have kept his committment to Miami because JoePa will screw him up as a QB.

Ahhhhh....talking about JoePa like that is a sin!-At least, it is considered one by many Penn Staters. I'm hoping Penn State makes it to a bowl game....

Ugh. I'm so depressed. At least I know Tech will not be ranked #1. I am really hoping now that LSU picks off Alabama.

I'd also like OU and OSU to both beat Texas Tech, but I haven't really thought through the implications of that... sigh.

CrackerBarrel 11-02-2008 01:01 AM

I think one of OU, OSU or if they slide through, Mizzou, beats TTech. You're looking a PSU v. UF title game square in the face right now if they can both take care of their business, because the way they're playing now Florida will destory even Bama (the "best" team in the country) in the SEC champisonship game.

As much as it sucks, I think I agree with this. Unless TTech gets beaten twice.

Is Boise State still undefeated? LOLZ.

DoubleTDG 11-02-2008 02:48 PM

I must say I am so proud of my school!!! I was most worried about the Texas game and now we have OSU and OU which as long as the Raiders keep their heads on straight should not be a problem. Now if they get the least bit cocky then they might be in some trouble.

It makes sense though. OU was ahead of Tech and you knew that would change and Florida obliterated a way better conference opponent and looks like the best team in the country right now.

Kevin 11-02-2008 07:09 PM

I disagree as I don't think Georgia is the second coming of Christ that the preseason polls thought they'd be.

It doesn't really matter what the rankings are now. If any of the top-5 win out (except for Penn State, who I think will stay at #3 because of their soft Big 10 schedule), I think they're in the NCG. I also think, for the same reason that USC's slow creap back up to the top won't go much farther. If you're a USC fan and you don't like that, watch some replays of the Oregon State game and then reevaluate your opinion.

I'd be disappointed to see anything but a Big XII v. SEC championship this year.

No it doesn't. OU lost to (at the time) #5 Texas. Texas lost to (at the time) #7 Tech... Texas should be lower in the polls.

The counterargument to that is that Texas lost in a nailbiter at home while Oklahoma lost on a neutral field by a fairly convincing margin.

It doesn't really matter at this point.

Why USC gets to jump several places after beating hapless WSU last week is absolutely mind boggling though. The Pac-10 is bad. Very bad.

I don't see anyone beating Penn State (I hope they do, just seems unlikely at this point) and there's no way the voters deny JoePa the chance to go out on top with a title, no matter how weak the Big 10 looks. I do think Tech will lose at least one (if they only lose to OU you have a mess of a three-way tiebreaker scenario in the Big XII South too), but right now if I had to guess the best odds are the SEC Champion v. Penn State (unless Bama loses before the championship game and still beats FL or FL loses again). Why? If Bama wins they're already number 1, if UF wins they will have a neutral site win against the #1 team in the country on championship saturday which will be enough to jump the other 1-loss teams. And USC fell big in the BCS this week and they have no impressive teams left on their schedule, so barring a lot of losses above them they finish ranked about where they are now.

Thanks for that flow chart Kevin. I have saved it and will send it to my son and husband who have been discussing the possibilities.

Wow, what a game Saturday night. I jumped from my seat when I thought that Gideon (that poor true freshman safety for texas) caught the interception, but then dropped it. I'm sure he's lost a lot of sleep since then:( But, certainly Tech deserved it, Texas shouldn't have spotted them 19 points in the first half of the game, they are too good of a team to make up that difference.

We missed the first 1/2 because we were at my son's highschool game, which was a DO or DIE to make the playoffs for the 3rd straight year, and WE DID!!! :) Woohoo! We then hurried home to watch in amazement as Texas went down:(:(

My oldest though, who goes to Florida and had 1st row seats in the endzone, was happy as punch!! If someone can tell me how to post a picture, I can post the one he texted me of Tebow scoring!!! Woohoo!!

If, somehow, Florida ends up playing Texas, I don't know what we'll do, but we sure as heck will break open the piggy bank to go as a family with one son wearing blue and orange and one son wearing burnt orange. Wow!!

I'm sorry to say to those Nittany Lion fans, that if they make it to the national championship and go up against any of these teams at the top from the big 12 or the sec, they are going to lose. It would be one more travesty of not having a playoff system. At least it won't be perennially over-rated USC!!!

OHNOITSJESS 11-03-2008 02:26 PM

Well, the rushing the field thing was really, really embarrassing for Tech. I gotta say. I obviously root for UT, but my boyfriend grew up in Lubbock and both of us rather like Lubbock, Tech, and the Tech campus except when it comes to Tech sports. But for example we'd root for Tech against any other Big XII team except Texas. We really felt the rushing the field thing was just classless. I do think that getting cocky is going to be a concern... OU looks pretty good after Nebraska, and OSU doesn't look half bad either.

I had the same reaction to the supposed Gideon interception. The commentator called out "INTERCEPTION" and my boyfriend and I were jumping up and down and hugging and freaking out. What a disappointment! Man oh man. I know we let Tech get up too much in the first quarter, but we made two HUGE mistakes there at the end with Gideon not getting the interception and the other guy missing what should have been an easy tackle on that last Tech pass.

I don't think it's really possible. I can buy the scenario of TTU losing to one or the other or both of OU and OSU. But UT losing to TAMU? Unlikely. First off, we lead the series with them by like a ridiculous amount. I know people always say "oh, it's a rivalry and anything can happen blah blah blah" but frankly TAMU has been sucking it up this year and UT has been looking pretty darn good.... I mean, yes, anything is possible, but I really do think UT will win out now.

Don't you think that UT has enough key injuries to give TAMU a fighting chance? The strength of UT's defense is its line -- and both of your best linemen are out with injuries. Is there enough depth so that their presence won't be missed? Is that even possible considering the two guys I'm talking about are probable first rounders?

I think there will be an effect, sure. You're going to notice those guys gone on the defense.

Consider also that the game is in Austin, that we're coming out of a 2-year losing streak in a series where we have historically predominated, that we're going to be fighting hard to survive, and that A&M's record is 4-5 and 2-3 in the conference.

A&M just plain sucks this year, sorry to say.
