If you notice, she si posting less here! She went to another Site.

Some just want to beat the dead horse/dog/cat.

Ding Dong, Ding Dong, either the bitch is dead or it is time to eat and close this thread!;)

Drolefille 09-11-2007 06:26 PM

Wow. Now you feel the need to try and "brag" about your members? What ever happened to just keeping to yourselves? If you're really the "kindler, gentler" site you won't keep coming back to GC to bemoan the alleged loss of people from these forums. It's simple, leave and make your point that way. If your forum is that much more appealing people will go there on their own (and I'm sure you PM them enough anyway).

That stands for you and your co-creator. Obsession isn't just a cologne.

I'm starting this thread so that both new and old GCers can post about the community and whether new membership to the site should be encouraged or discouraged.

The reason I think that this subject needs discussion is because I have seen a number of new posters (like myself) get their a$$ handed to them because they were trying to meaningfully contribute to a conversation, but used the wrong word or were not able to give as much insight as some of the veteran-posters.

I'm sure that some moderator will think this is an attempt to personally attack and delete this thread, but I honestly think there needs to be a conversation about being nice to new posters. Yes, we don't know everything, but just because we're new doesn't mean we don't have anything to contribute. I've even read in other threads that we (new GCers) should refrain from posting for a matter of months before contributing our own thoughts. How lame would that be and how many great minds would be deterred from becoming involved in GC chat if they had to go through the motions so that they were deemed worthy to contribute?

I understand that a lot of new posters start discussions that have already been discussed (and many of you find that annoying) or say things that you may agree with as a whole but don't think are 100% right, but what good does it serve to rub it in new posters faces and possibly drive us away from the site altogether? But maybe some of us want to start a new discussion on an old topic because we don't just want to read a thread back from 2002 and call it good. Maybe we want to have a dialogue and that is why we came here to a FORUM.

So do the new GC people need to just suck it up and get whipped into shape? Should GC have stages of membership where you have to earn your right to post (members for 1 month get 1 posting a week/day or something)? Should old GCers have a little more patience and just laugh at all us newbies on the inside, knowing we will eventually learn?

Lest we forget, here is the beginning of the thread :p

And so what if she's over at the other site? More power to her!

It's funny, no one's really crying over them except the same person. I don't see anyone else complaining.

If GC becomes a ghost town, I'm sure we'll notice. In the mean time we don't need someone telling us how empty it's becoming when we're talking a handful of active posters who've actually left - something that happens regularly anyway.

AOII_LB93 09-11-2007 07:24 PM

Wow...see what happens when I go to work again?:) Could someone PM me with what happy pony rainbow land is if you don't want to post it? I must have missed that part of the convo. :o

SWTXBelle 09-11-2007 07:48 PM

Someone needs an award . . .

. . . . for coming up with the name Happy Pony Rainbow Land . ..I'm gonna check and see . . .

eta - I believe our winner is AChiOSnap! Correct me if I'm wrong, but according to my search, she came up with Smiley Happy Pony Rainbow Land on 4/4/07.

Happy Pony Rainbow land is the site that BatShit and Earpie created together where everyone is welcome to post about anything they want - so long as they agree with Batshit and Earpie, and it qualifies as sunshine up the ass.

It's almost exactly like GC in format, and in fact they stole several announcements and posts from here. They didn't even bother to change "GreekChat" to their forum's name, they just cut and pasted.

Anyone who they feel is being attacked here, they PM (Subject: Tom Earp, I'm sure) to come over to their site. Funny though, most of those people who have become active posters over there are still just as active over here.

GC really IS like crack, apparently - the methadone just doesn't do. They need the real deal.

kathykd2005 09-11-2007 07:57 PM

I still post here because I like to think I'm resilient. :) Maybe I'm just kidding myself, though. Maybe it really is just the crack factor.

I went over there...and wow...just wow - what drugs are being doled out upon membership? Yeah, you're 48, 500lbs, married to a goat with herpes? You should totally go through recruitment!

Granted not everything here is rainbows, puppies and sunshine....but sh*t neither is life. As far as being attacked, crap it's an internet message board. If what is on the internet bothers you that much, maybe don't leave the house because real life might just come bite you in the ass.

Those that find it easy to mesh with the GC culture are people who have thick skins, know their shit and either lurk for a long time to get the feel of the place, or they do their searching and research so they avoid posting things we've all seen a million times.

My advice for newbies - lurking is the best advice that I can give outside the words USE SEARCH. If I was showing up as a newbie, I'd try and watch the atmosphere, suss out what the place is like, then start posting on a few innocuous social threads in Chit Chat before I'd jump into serious conversation that I might not realize the history to in this place.

If you're coming on here because you have a specific question, make sure it hasn't been answered before (it mostly likely has; be creative with searching). Be polite when you ask. If you get snarked at, ignore it - even better, check yourself. You might be a trainwreck waiting to happen.

*Use of the word 'you' is strictly for demo purposes only. No specific 'you' is being addressed. If you think you're 'you', then you're mistaken. You're not 'you'.*

Truer words were never spoken. I realize I haven't been registered here for a long time, but I lurked for a good year or something like that before joining to ask a question. Before I posted that question, I did my research, went to the website in question, sent an email, and THEN came and posted. What was the result? I got support and extremely helpful advice about how to proceed. No snark, no nastiness, nothing.

It's not necessarily that people are mean, but when you (again, a GENERAL you) come on, post something that could easily be answered by a search, don't take the time to browse around the site but leap straight to posting your new thread, and compound those sins with unintelligible grammar and attitude when called out on stuff instead of attempting to explain yourself in a clearer, more reasonable manner, well, you're asking for it. And for pete's sake, don't take things so personally. It's the internet.

ETA: Clearly this thread has gone other places since Jen posted, but I wanted to get in my two cents.

FYI SWTXBelle, I totally insulted you in a chitchat thread by calling you a piss-poor mother. What, my degradations aren't good enough for you?

I would also like to propose that we no longer use the word pony in relation to that other site. I happen to like ponies. Can we use goat instead? Happy goats and rainbows land. Where they have to bribe people to go over there because otherwise no one would give two shits. If it's so great, why aren't they staying there? Why are they still here?

God I go to Florida for a week and miss out on all the fun. Teh Cult lives on in spirit.

SWTXBelle 09-13-2007 07:00 AM

Hey, AlexMack, if we change it to goats, aren't we revealing too much ritual???
And BRIBES? There were bribes? Jeez, all I got was pm invitations . . .

The sites serve two purposes for me. I like GC for the more innocuous stuff -- reading others' recruitment stories, participating in polls, etc. But when it comes to posting personal information, I prefer the other site. I'd like to think I'm welcome in both places.

Posting personal info in there??? Hmmm. I think you'd be better off keeping personal info way away from there. The horse's ass of Happy Rainbow Pony Land loves to get all the personal info she can to stalk people. Just warning you. Don't piss her off or she'll do public record searches on you and your family. She's done it before.

I personally am so happy that HRPL exists because it keeps the one who shall not be named far away from me and far away from here.

If you've been over there, you've seen that what she means by "personal info" is her Sorority Shopping persuit. Yes, I said it.

Wow. You found A spelling mistake I made. Congrats.

That doesn't mean that you're not still a sorority shopper.
