Yes, XOAlumXO, you got it!

“Project Greek Island,” the ultimate bomb shelter, designed and intended to house Congress in the event of a nuclear war, is now open to the public. The facility, built under The Greenbrier resort, was planned by the Eisenhower Administration during the Cold War. Russia had detonated an atomic bomb in 1949. Nuclear war was a real possibility. Our government wanted a shelter for Congress if such a war ever happened.

Name the only mother - daughter combo who have both served on the Governing Council as National Officers:

a.) Winnie Bowker & Saranne "Punky" Penberthy
b.) Elizabeth Dyer & Margaret "Margy" D. Lyon
c.) Mary Ruth Ferris & Vickie Ferris
d.) Jobelle Holcombe & Winnie H. Bowker

ChiOqt 11-07-2003 02:38 PM

That's a hard one...I"m just going to guess B??

NutBrnHair 11-07-2003 02:51 PM

Good guess, but nope...not B. (Elizabeth Dyer was Margy Lyon's aunt.)

CardinalSM 11-07-2003 03:00 PM

I'm going to guess A.

Way to go, CardinalSM...you are correct! Saranne "Punky" Bowker Penberty is the daughter of Winnie Bowker. Winnie served as S.N.V. from 1954-1970 and as S.H. from 1970-1976. Punky served as S.N.V. from 1994-2000.

Correct, QT! Thirteen is it! (This summer it will become 14.)

ChiOqt 11-09-2003 10:42 PM

What Chi Omega helped in the early establishment of the PHC and earned the nickname "Dean of the Greeks"?

A. Ida Pace Purdue
B. Mattie Craighill Nicholas
C. Clara Earle
D. Mary Love Collins

CardinalSM 11-10-2003 03:06 AM

oooo I think it is A) Ida Pace Purdue. . .

NutBrnHair 11-10-2003 09:48 AM

OK...I'll guess D. I know MLC was a big deal with NPC, but that might have been in later years. Oh well, just a guess!

ChiOqt 11-11-2003 01:23 AM

I'm guessing C.

NutBrnHair 11-11-2003 02:01 PM

No, C is a true statement. In 1978, to celebrate Zeta Gamma Chapter's 50th birthday at the College of Charleston, the chapter donated gates to the college. The gates have the letters chi and omega in gold in the center.

Guess again.

ucfcutie 11-11-2003 11:32 PM

I am guessing E!

You're RIGHT, ucfcutie -- you go, girl.

Every quarter hour from the time when they serve as a campus-wide alarm clock until they say "goodnight" at ten, the Beta Bells ring over Oxford. The Beta Theta Pi campanile was presented to Miami in 1939, a hundred years after the fraternity was founded in the original West Wing of Old Miami.

Time for another question?

The only S.H. to enter the Omega Chapter during her term as National President was:

a.) Mary Love Collins
b.) Elizabeth Dyer
c.) Elizabeth Orman
d.) Roselyn Dabbs

XOAlumXO 11-16-2003 04:27 PM

Mary Love Collins

No, XOAlumXO...it's not Mary Love Collins. She served as S.H. from 1910-1952 and after that held the titles of Administrative Councilor and President Emeritus until her death in 1972 at the age of 90. (Yep, she was around a looooong time!)

xok85xo 11-18-2003 02:31 PM

I know it wasn't Roslyn Dabbs, so i'm going to say Elizabeth Orman?

xok85xo is correct. Elizabeth Orman passed away while serving as National President in 1979. (I remember wearing a black felt square under my badge for a week.)

? ? ? ? ?

The Chi Omega Foundation, the fundraising arm of the Fraternity, began in what year?

a.) 1930, to oversee the funds raised to build the Greek Theatre at the Univ. of Arkansas
b.) 1945, as WWII drew to an end and in preparation for Chi Omega's 50th anniversary
c.) 1978, which makes this year the 25th anniversary of the Foundation
d.) 1992, at the NAtional Convention when plans for the Memphis Executive Headquarters were revealed

xo_kathy 11-19-2003 04:10 PM

Ladies, it is a sad day on the Chi Omega board. Our dear newcomer, NutBrnHair, bastion of Chi Omega knowledge, may have messed up her facts...BUT, I will trust that our dear sister simply made a typo in the D answer.

From chiomega.com

"Founded in 1982, the Chi Omega Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization and contributions are tax-deductible as allowed by law."

;) :D

::::::laughing::::::

I'm busted! Yikes, okay -- that will teach me to ask questions without double-checking!

I believe what happened was that in 1978, National organized the charitable scholarships (like the MLC for graduate study, etc.) into a group...that was actually the forerunner of the "Foundation."

More than you wanted to know?! :)

Way to go, Kathy -- good answer! Okay, I need a break! Someone else ask.

XOAlumXO 11-19-2003 04:46 PM

Heehee! Nutbrwn, you're allowed this mistake...after all, I don't think I have EVER met anyone who knows so many XO facts!!

Nor have I! :) I also should point out, just now as I was trying to find another question to ask (to give NutBrn a break!) I saw this on the timeline on the website:

"1977
Chi Omega Foundation established"

See, you DO know what you are talking about. The questions needed the word 'established' or 'founded' to make it not a trick question! ;)

OK, this is probably an easy one...
Where was the first alumnae chapter?
A. Lexington, KY
B. Memphis, TN
C. Fayetteville, AR
D. Dallas, TX

XOAlumXO 11-20-2003 02:11 AM

I am guessing "D." It's been awhile since I read our handbooks they handed out our pledge semester, so don't be suprised if my guess is off.....

NutBrnHair 11-20-2003 05:50 AM

Oh heck, I'll pick "C."

Correct, xo_kathy! Jan is one cool lady! She has volunteered thousands of hours.

OK, Kathy...ask another question.

Let's Learn About MLC

Which of the following statements about Mary Love Collins is correct:

a.) She smoked cigarettes with a long, slender cigarette holder
b.) She moved the mailbox at her house on Weebetook Ln. to the corner that touched Grandin Rd., since it was a more prestigious address for the Chi Omega HQ
c.) She was afraid of airplanes and refused to fly
d.) All of the above

CardinalSM 11-25-2003 10:16 PM

OK so I am going to be the weirdo who says all of the above because that has never been an option before! This is what I do in accounting class and it works most of the time :)
