Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the nation's largest African-American women's organization, is hosting its 48th National Convention in Philadelphia, July 27 - August 2, 2006, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Delta members representing chapters in 46 states and several foreign countries will convene at the biennial meeting.

One Mission, One Sisterhood: Empowering Communities Through Committed Service is the theme for the national convention, whose purpose is to address issues relevant to African-American women, their families, and respective communities. Throughout its 93-year history Delta Sigma Theta has clearly distinguished itself as a premiere service organization that boldly addresses the challenges facing global communities.

"After 85 years, we are delighted to be returning to the hometown of our beloved first national president, Dr. Sadie T. M. Alexander," said Dr. Louise A. Rice, Delta's 23rd national president. "The last time we convened here for a national convention was in 1921. We look forward to being in Philadelphia later this month with more than 12,000 of our members represented."

Dr. Alexander was the first black woman to earn a Ph.D. in the United States, the first black woman admitted to the Pennsylvania bar, and the first black woman graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

During the convention, Delta's national leaders will present updates on major initiatives in the areas of education, economic development, political awareness, health and wellness, social justice, and art and culture. Its healthy lifestyles task force will address the high incidence of obesity among women by urging Delta members and all women of color to achieve healthy weight goals. Delta's Social Action Commission will focus on race and poverty as they affect African-Americans.

Founded in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a public service organization composed of college-educated, predominantly African-American women. The Sorority has more than 900 chapters in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Republic of Korea. More than 200,000 women have been initiated into its ranks.

African American sorority gets shopping day at Macy's

Bring extra, extra Cash:D

Never underestimate "the power of networking and the sisterhood."

That's how Rita Waters of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority explains how the group, which calls itself the nation's largest African American women's organization, got a special members-only shopping day set aside for itself at the new Macy's store in Center City on Saturday. The four-hour event will be four days before the Aug. 2 public opening of Macy's on Market Street.

About 12,000 women, and a few thousand spouses and children, are expected to attend the six-day sorority confab, scheduled to start Friday at the Convention Center.

Waters, a West Chester resident who's the convention coordinator, said the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau tried unsuccessfully to get Macy's to stage the special event. Three weeks ago, a member who is an auditor for the chain spoke to her boss, who pushed the idea up the chain of command until it was approved, Waters said.

Besides a 15 percent discount on purchases, the sisters will get a "light brunch," Waters said. "I think Macy's saw the opportunity."- Tom Belden

This will be my first official event with my new chapter and I am soooo excited! I even got my official chapter shirt to wear at Convention.

BTW, the hostess chapter's Welcome Event starts at 9pm so I would think some sorors would be going to that before the get together at Soror LadyGreek's spot.

Yep, I will need to make an appearance there also, so I'll probably go from 9:30-10:00. However, my room will be open.

All I ask is that y'all don't get any Philly Steak grease on my materials :D

The Relaunch Party featuring Jaguar Wright, found on the Urbanphilly.com site, is the work of a couple of Ques. They want the word to get out to all Ques and Deltas to patronize this event.

Inquisitive06 07-30-2006 09:10 PM

Wishing you guys much success on your convention. I was going to try to get up to Philly to catch up with you ladies (including my Aunt and several cousins) after our Centennial Convention.......but I am too tired right now. (LoL). Hope you all have fun.

BTW, I met some Delta's at our convention here in D.C. and they were mad cute!;)

Story about convention (Philly Inquirer)

Sorority brings Delta affection to City of Brotherly Love

Lloylita Prout
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

It's not the Red Cross. So what organization is being represented by the women in those crimson red and white t-shirts?

It is Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. And those women - over 12,000 of them - are in the city through next Wednesday for their 48th National Convention. The last time Deltas were here for their convention was 1921.

"One Mission, One Sisterhood: Empowering Communities Through Committed Service" is this year's theme as the members of the nation's largest African American women's organization attend workshops, meetings, and elect officers. The group this year is stressing a healthy lifestyle, which is synonymous with one of the initiatives of this city and its mayor.

At this morning's convention kick-off, Delta's national president Louise A. Rice personally challenged Mayor Street - in a red tie for the occasion - by presenting him with a pedometer "to see who has the greater number of footsteps by the end of next week."

But she soon found out that she chose the wrong competitor. Mayor Street walks to and from work and gets in walking time on the weekend, too.

Besides a health initiative, Rice said the organization felt a "particular kinship" with the city as this is the hometown of the sorority's first national president, Sadi T.M. Alexander.

Alexander, who was the first black woman to receive a Ph.D in the U.S., served from 1919 to 1923. She was also the first black woman to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and to be admitted to the Pennsylvania bar.

And Delta women - Shirley Chisholm, Ruby Dee, Lena Horne, and Sheryl Lee Ralph - continue make significant accomplishments.

Looking beyond the revenue the convention will bring to the city, Mayor Street cited the city violence and how the sorority's presence could influence youngsters "to stay in school" and "work hard".

"When they see you, they see possibilities," he said.

Since its founding in 1913 by 22 Howard University students, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has expanded to more than 900 chapters in the U.S, England, Germany, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. And representatives from those chapters will not only work and learn during their stay but have fun, too. Also on the schedule is a Greek step show Saturday, a gospel concert with Kurt Carr, and Kim Burrell Sunday, and a gala on Monday with performers Harolyn Blackwell, Lala Hathaway, Angie Stone and the Clark Sisters. The public is welcome to attend these events.

More information about the sorority and its national convention can be found at http://www.deltasigmatheta.org or http://www.deltasigmatheta.org/convention06/index.html.

There is another story about the convention but I'm going to post that on another thread.

orighu 07-31-2006 05:14 PM

I'm back and boy am I tired....

I want to say I had a great time, although I was only there from Friday late afternoon - today. This being my first convention it was very overwhelming. I had tears during the opening ceremony:o . I tried to do all I could and didn't spend too much $$ at the vendors. It was just simply wonderful being with all my Sorors! I can't wait til 2008!!!:D
