Representing the SWAC!
Jackson State University!
The home of the world reknowned, summa cum laude of bands, The Sonic Boom of the South! Tower of Power (saxophone section) Jackson State University, Mississippi's only comprehensive university, was the place for me. I had my pick of east coast schools and offers of scholarships if I majored in engineering (WTF). I always knew I wanted to attend an HBCU because I figured I would be in a majority white work environment. When Jackson State offered the academic scholarships for its new Mass Communications program, I jumped at the chance. :) I'm SO glad, I went to JSU! :D |

Don't act crazy! You know about the BAYOU CLASSIC!!! It's what you all in 'sippy try to duplicate for Labor Day weekend....JUST TRASH!
It's the CLASSIC that EVERYONE tries to duplicate! You know it was the idea of the visionary Eddie Robinson of GRAMBLING STATE! If it wasn't for the Bayou Classic, SU wouldn't be recognized NOR BLACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL! YA'LL BETTER GET YOUR BLACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY BOOKS OUT! This history was written by BLACK folks... there aren't any lies there! |
Say what?

These classics were not as en vogue when I was in school as they are now. Aside from the Bayou and Florida classics, I don't recall anything along that line. The other games were HUGE campus rivalries. I dislike the idea that many HBCUs move their games to (mostly) Midwest and Northeast cities and call them classics. Maybe the universities need the cash. As long as the fans travel and the teams get paid this trend will continue. When did the SU/GSU game move to the Super Dome? I don't remember them playing in Nawlins when I was in college. Anyway, don't hate that other schools are on the gravy train. It was bound to happen sooner or later. |

SWAC rivalries have existed for decades. I can appreciate all of them. But for me none compare to JSU/ASU, whether it is called a classic or a regular end-of-season matchup. Continue to support the BC. We'll see if your Louisiana schools will be worthy this year. I think I hear those 'skeeters buzzing again. :D |

National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week, 2006
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America Education is the cornerstone of a prosperous and hopeful Nation. By providing a quality education, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) help students achieve their dreams and realize the promise of America. During National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week, we recognize the significant contributions of HBCUs and underscore our commitment to helping these distinguished institutions in the pursuit of educational excellence. Our Nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities are places of higher learning and achievement that prepare new generations of Americans to become responsible leaders in their communities and around the world. HBCUs enable students to gain the skills necessary to compete for the jobs of the 21st century. My Administration is dedicated to ensuring the continued success of HBCUs and securing the constitutional guarantees of liberty and equality to all Americans. The President's Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities has worked to help these institutions benefit from Federal programs, obtain private-sector support for their endowments, and build partnerships to strengthen faculty development and cooperative research. In addition, the HBCU Capital Financing Program provides HBCUs with access to funds for the repair, renovation, and construction of educational resources and facilities. During National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week, we celebrate the enduring importance of HBCUs, and resolve to continue to support their critical mission. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 10 through September 16, 2006, as National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week. I call upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this week with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities in recognition of the vital contributions of HBCUs. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-first.
