Ohhhjjjjenthal as reality TV star

Reality TV truly sucks hot a** if this comes to fruition. And from what I understand, this is a network specifically aimed at "us" -- http://www.uatvn.com I can't determine, however, if it's black-owned, but if it is, Bob Johnson gets some company in the hall of shame.

Oldest person in US dies.........

MARY DOROTHY CHRISTIAN died Sunday at the Creekside Care Center in San Pablo, where she had lived since 1992. She had come down with a cold that turned into pneumonia, said nurse Ester Aballa.
“She would be 114 in two months, and she kept saying she wanted to make it,” Aballa said. “I guess it was just her time.”
The Gerontology Research Group identified Christian as the oldest living American in November following the death of Mary Parr of Florida, who also was 113. The title brought Christian a brief celebrity that she enjoyed, according to relatives.
Born June 12, 1889, in Taunton, Mass., Christian moved with her family to San Pablo. She was a teenager working at an East Bay chocolate factory when she watched flames engulf San Francisco following the 1906 earthquake.
She married in 1907 and had two sons, whom she outlived. Following a divorce in 1922, she worked several jobs, including elevator operator and department store saleswoman, before retiring in 1971.
Relatives said Christian lived alone until she turned 102 and refused to be taken in by family members. She indulged cravings for Kentucky Fried Chicken and Hostess Twinkies as long as she was able, they said.
A niece, Marge Parks, said Christian was sometimes confused about the time and her whereabouts but nearly always remembered relatives’ birthdays and anniversaries.
Christian is survived by two great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The oldest living American is now Elana Slough, 113, of New Jersey, who was born 26 days after Christian, according to the UCLA School of Medicine, a member of the research group which tracks the ultra-old. The oldest living American man, 112-year-old Fred Hale, lives in New York.
The world’s oldest person, according to the Gerontology Research Group, is Kamato Hongo of Japan, who is 115. The oldest person on record was Jeanne Calment, a Frenchwoman who was 122 when she died in 1997.

Mandela's Ex-Wife Found Guilty of Fraud

By SAHM VENTER, Associated Press Writer

PRETORIA, South Africa - Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the ex-wife of former President Nelson Mandela, was convicted Thursday of theft and fraud involving $120,000.

AP Photo

Madikizela-Mandela — whose financial adviser, Addy Moolman, also was convicted — could be sentenced to 15 years in jail.

The trial marked the latest setback for Madikizela-Mandela, who had played a role in the nation's successful anti-apartheid campaign led by Nelson Mandela.

Madikizela-Mandela, 64, and Moolman sat next to each other as Magistrate Peet Johnson read his verdict for two and a half hours.

He said Madikizela-Mandela had not been honest to the court and that her evidence that she did not know about the fraud was "totally improbable." On the theft charges, Johnson said she was an accomplice to Moolman.

Madikizela-Mandela and Moolman had both pleaded innocent to 60 charges of fraud and 25 of theft involving $120,000 at the African National Congress (news - web sites) Women's League, which Madikizela-Mandela leads.

The prosecution said letters on organization stationery that bore Madikizela-Mandela's signature were used to fraudulently obtain bank loans in the name of bogus employees, including her daughter, Zinzi.

The theft charges relate to money deducted from the bank accounts of loan applicants for a funeral policy that the prosecution says did not exist.

Concluding her testimony last month, Madikizela-Mandela said she signed the documents, handed to her by her secretary, without checking them.

Outside the court, Madikizela-Mandela was met by a group of about 30 students, chanting "Viva Winnie viva," with raised fists. She smiled at the group and raised her fist in return.

One young man who did not wish to be identified said he was disappointed by the judgment and claimed the African National Congress had deserted Madikizela-Mandela. He said all she had been trying to do was help the poor.

"I don't think she deserves this type of treatment," he said.

The trial started in July 2002, and proceeded in fits and starts, with 23 witnesses testifying for the state.

On Thursday, Madikizela-Mandela was convicted of 43 counts of fraud and 25 of theft, while Moolman was found guilty of 58 counts of fraud and 25 of theft.

Madikizela-Mandela is still known to her supporters as "the mother of the nation," even though she also was convicted in 1991 of kidnapping and assault, and sentenced to six years in prison. Her appeal saw the sentence reduced to a fine.

Nevertheless, she has been sharply criticized by the African National Congress party, which leads the country.

for all of you b-ball fans...Detroit in Da Houze!!!

Big Ben receives an unprecedented 96.7 percent of the vote
Pistons' Wallace Wins Defensive Player of Year

NEW YORK, April 20 -- Ben Wallace of the Detroit Pistons was named the 2001-02 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, the NBA announced Saturday.
Wallace, a 6-foot-9, 240 pound center/forward, averaged 13.0 rebounds per game and 3.48 blocks per game joining Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Walton and 12-time NBA All-Star Hakeem Olajuwon as the only players in NBA history to lead the league in rebounds and blocks in the same season.

Ben Wallace ruled the paint in 2001-02.
Allen Einstein/NBAE/Getty Images
Abdul-Jabbar led the NBA in rebounding (16.9 rpg) and blocks (4.12 bpg) in 1975-76; Walton accomplished the feat in 1976-77 14.4 rpg, 3.25 bpg); and Olajuwon led the NBA in both categories in 1989-90 (14.0 rpg, 4.59 bpg).

In the most convincing Defensive Player of the Year vote ever, Wallace received 96.7 percent of the votes (116 out of a possible 120) from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Dikembe Mutombo of the Philadelphia 76ers and the Lakers' Kobe Bryant were the only other players who received votes. Last season, Wallace finished fifth with six votes.

Wallace is the first player other than Mutombo or Alonzo Mourning to win the Defensive Player of the Year Award since 1995-96 (Sonics' Gary Payton) and the first Piston to win the award since Dennis Rodman in 1990-91.

Wallace helped the Pistons to their first Central Division title since 1989-90, the year Detroit won its second straight NBA championship. This year's team improved from a 32-win season last year to a 50-win season this year, the first 50-plus-win season for Detroit since 1996-97.

Wallace also led the club's defensive surge as Detroit held its opponents to 92.2 ppg (sixth in the NBA) this season as compared to 97.3 just a year ago. The Pistons also finished best in the NBA in blocks (565).

Wallace grabbed an NBA season-high 28 rebounds in a 109-101 win versus Boston on March 24 and blocked an NBA season-high 10 shots on Feb. 24 at Milwaukee.

The six-year NBA veteran, who went undrafted out of Virginia Union '96, also averaged 7.6 points on .531 (255-for-480) shooting with 1.73 steals per game over 36.5 mpg in 80 games (80 starts). He ranked second in offensive rebounds (318), third in defensive rebounds (721) and 14th in steals (138).

The 120-member voting panel consisted of 35 national media members and 85 media members who cover the NBA.

Why OJ, Why????

OJ: No Plans for Reality TV
Apr 24, 2:01 PM EST
(Associated Press) -- Contrary to widely circulated reports, O.J. Simpson said Thursday he has no plans to star in a reality TV show but might consider becoming a news commentator for actor Robert Blake's murder trial.
"I have no plans in any way to do a reality show even though people have approached me about it," Simpson said in a telephone interview from his Miami, Fla., home. "I'm not looking to do anything. I don't have agents out there looking for something for O.J."
Simpson said he has been contacted about a reality show that would chronicle his day-to-day life but he's not interested.
"There's no plans in the Simpson family to have any cameras coming in our house," he said.
But Simpson said he knows where the new reports came from. He is aware of video footage which was shot during his travels to a series of hip-hop concerts in 2001 and 2002.
"To be honest, this footage would get pretty boring," he said. "Maybe for a half hour it would be interesting but not for a series."
He said the videos show him arriving at airports, signing autographs and talking at hip-hop concerts.
"I had a lot of fun," he said. "We were welcomed everywhere. But this was not meant to be shown anywhere except as rebuttal to those who say I'm a pariah."
Urban Television Network Corp., a Fort Worth, Texas, satellite and cable channel, and Miami production company Spiderboy International said they are planning to create 13 one-hour episodes of the show using the archived footage of Simpson.
"We've got everything done, the reality show is coming," Spiderboy founder Norman Pardo said Wednesday. But Simpson's lawyer said he had not been contacted about it.
Urban America has about 70 affiliates and reaches 22 million households.
As for commenting on the Blake case, he said he has been contacted by TV outlets which he declined to name.
"I'd love to do it," he said. "I think I have a lot of insight. I don't know if he's guilty or not but I know there's no such thing anymore as innocent until proven guilty."
Blake is accused of murdering wife Bonny Lee Bakley in Los Angeles in 2001.
Simpson, a football Hall of Famer, was tried and acquitted of murder after the 1994 slayings of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, but a civil jury later held him liable and ordered him to pay the victims' survivors $33.5 million. He has not worked since then because any money he makes could be seized to satisfy that judgment, which remains largely unpaid.
"I'm well aware of my situation," he said Thursday. "I didn't commit the crime, and I don't think these people deserve anything. I'm not putting myself in a position of having to give them anything."

Cameras are rolling in New Orleans on “The Playmaker,” a pro football drama starring “Soul Food” hunk Boris Kodjoe and “Drumline” leading lady Zoe Saldana. Boris stars as T.K. Marsalis, a gifted athlete whose dominance on the field appears to be his ticket out of the inner-city. But an unexpected event forces Marsalis to leave the two loves of his life: his girl (Saldana) and the game. Years later, he returns -- with a new name, Lazarus Jordan – as a member of a pro team’s practice squad. Inspired by the tough-as-nails coach (Alec Baldwin), Jordan rises through the ranks and challenges the teams’ star (played by San Francisco 49ers star Terrell Owens).
As his popularity grows, Jordan must face up to the mistakes of his past in order to claim his future. One unique thing about “The Playmaker” is that the movie is being executive produced by two NFL players: Green Bay Packers defensive end Joe Johnson and New Orleans Saints tackle Norman Hand. NFL Hall of Famer Jim Grown appears in the film along with Jason Taylor of the Miami Dolphins and Lisa Guerrero from “The Best Damn Sports Show.”

Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run DMC has shelved plans to collaborate with 50 Cent. The two rappers had been talking about going into the studio to hook up a tribute to Jam Master Jay, who was 50’s mentor. But 50’s been so busy that he and D haven’t found the time to record. So, DMC is going to do the record solo. Meanwhile, DMC is real excited about another collaboration that did come together. The Run DMC rapper worked with Kid Rock on a joint called “Find My Way” which will be the first single off of his solo album, “Chex, Thugs, Rock & Roll.” DMC says Kid Rock is “the greatest musician/producer/writer” he’s ever known! Kid Rock doesn’t like DMC to say that, but D said, quote: “This guy helped me write it and played every instrument on the record. He's not just some white guy rapping, he's a musical genius."

Oprah doesn’t actually sing on the album (called “1, 2, to the Bass”), she recites a Maya Angelou poem over a music track composed by Clark and Quincy Jones. The first single from Stanley Clark’s new album is a remake of the Robert Flack / Donny Hathaway standard “Where Is The Love” featuring Glenn Lewis and Amel Larrieux.

Comedian Jamie Foxx arrested after alleged scuffle
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Comedian Jamie Foxx and his sister were arrested early Saturday after allegedly refusing to leave a casino and then fighting with police officers called to escort them out, authorities said.

Foxx, 35, and Deidra Dixon, 25, refused to show identification when they entered Harrah's Casino about 4 a.m., then argued with security guards who ordered them to leave, said police Capt. Marlon A. Defillo. He said the two walked inside to a gambling table, then fought with police officers who were called to remove them.

Dixon struck one officer in the face, Defillo said. He said the officers used pepper spray and handcuffed them.

Foxx, booked with trespassing, battery on officers and resisting arrest, was released on $1,900 bond. Dixon, of Tarzana, Calif., was booked with trespassing, simple battery on officers and resisting arrest.

A call to Foxx's publicist, Matt Labov, was not immediately returned Saturday.

Foxx was in New Orleans for filming of the movie Unchain My Heart. A woman who answered the phone for the company handling publicity for the film declined to comment and would not give her name.

Foxx, who lives in Hollywood, created and starred in The Jamie Foxx Show (1996-2001) and has appeared in other television shows and movies, including 1999's Any Given Sunday.
