There are lots of girls named "Crimson" or "Bama" here in Alabama (I know, shades of Harvey Updike). Even had a girl going thru recruitment last year named Krimson White.
Oh dear...

Like Lorelai and Rory. I had to look that one up because for years, I didn't get it. :p

"It's a nickname - his name is William."
"How is "Liam" a nickname for 'William'?"
"Um, last four letters of 'William'."

It makes much more sense to me than 'Bill'- my husband's nickname.

You know, I used to babysit for a Liam. It never occurred to me that his real name might be William. I haven't spoken to that family in years but now I'm tempted to e-mail the mother and ask.

SWTXBelle 07-20-2012 07:48 PM

I have heard of people naming their boys Liam - not William, just Liam. I gave all my children names which could be shortened - none of them went by nicknames until #4. Guess I was just tired!

Well, Liam is an Irish Gaelic form of William (or Uilliam), much like Sean and Seamus are the Irish Gaelic forms of John and James, so I think it is a fairly common Irish name. (Think Liam Neeson.)

I do really like the name.

barbino 07-20-2012 10:55 PM

We have a Liam (about 10 yrs. old) in the extended family. My sister married into a huge Irish family; for holidays they often rent a hall because no other place can hold all the cousins & their kids.

SWTXBelle 07-20-2012 10:58 PM

Liam really suits him.

His father shortens it to "Lee" - so we have "Jackson and Lee".

Sounds like my family...only we don't rent anywhere. If we all have to get together, we go to my uncle's place because he has a lot of land. All the elders sit inside and the other 3/4 of us all sprawl outside. :o

greekdee 07-23-2012 02:17 PM

Liam is getting popular in my area, too -- and as SWTX Belle said, it's not always being used as short for William. Just Liam.

Switching to girls names, I have all boys -- but had one been a girl, she would have been Allison. Mine are in their mid to late teens now, but Allison would still probably be the name I'd choose...though in recent years, I've fallen in love with the name Charlotte.

Hmm...Allison Charlotte...Charlotte Allison. If I went with Charlotte Allison, her full initials would be CAM, and wouldn't Cam be a cute nickname? Seriously, tho, why am I going here? I'm hot flashin' these days..

agzg 07-23-2012 03:09 PM

I have no idea what I would name a kid, but I can guarantee you it's not what Live-in wants to name a kid. If his names are still on the list we will just not be having them.

What names does he have picked out?

Pirouette 07-23-2012 06:03 PM

This weekend was BIL's girlfriend's baby shower. At the end, she announced the name for their daughter: Kassidy Grace, Kassi for short.

I've always liked that name...so much that it's the name my husband and I were going to name our son if he had been a girl (well, Cassidy Grace, Cassie for short). Looks like we'll have to come-up with a new name for a girl if I ever get pregnant again.

IndianaSigKap 07-23-2012 06:18 PM

I have always liked Violet as a first or middle name for a girl, giving a nod to Sigma Kappa.

One is Mackenzie. Another is Cadence. I think they're completely stupid and insufferable. I quite literally cannot utter either of them without rolling my eyes. I should note that I think they would be fine for others (I'm not about walking up to people and being like "Your name is Mackenzie? That's a really stupid name."), I just cannot imagine a time where I would ever think "Hey, yes, this name is totally a reflection of the person I hope my child to become and my personality as well. Let's use this name." Also, I cannot imagine screaming either of those names out the back door.

Our list of "do not names" is getting longer the longer we wait to form babby since we have so many redundancies in both of our families.

This ended up being my father/daughter dance at my wedding. It was perfect :)

The whole crowd didn't realize the song until the first "Georgia..."...and then there was a collective "AAAAWWWWWW!!!!!"

Husband and I were at a cocktail party last week and the subject of naming children came up. The guests were a combination of new grandparents and parents with preteens. Admittedly this is a very west coast crowd (so no "southern multiple naming" is generally done here).

I will say that one of my children does have my maiden name as his or her middle name. General consensus: misspelled names, cutsy names put kids at a disadvantage. As one grandmother (newly minted) said that she was grateful that the first set of names were rejected...if it was a girl the thought was: Bambee.

I'm not saying what the last name is except to say that this child would have had every teacher fighting for laughter control. The parents settled on Rebecca or Robert.

Cadence? as in music cadence?. Seriously?

Kevin 07-24-2012 01:35 PM

^My wife and I have agreed on a general rule for naming. If it looks stupid as Dr. or Justice (name goes here), that name is off the table.

Great minds...although we only put Chief Justice in front of our kids' names.

KSUViolet06 07-24-2012 02:44 PM

My local paper has a "new baby" insert every year around the holiday season. If your baby was born during the year, you can submit their photo, name, and birthdate for publication in the insert. There are something like 200 babies in it every year.

I make sure to get the paper when it comes out simply for the entertainment value of seeing what people are naming their kids.

Every year there are some really bad ones. The ones I remember the most from the last one:

Cassadee (dumb spelling version of Cassidy)
Jakkelyn (dumb spelling version Jacqueline)
Lamar-Trae
Taquaerius
Gucci & Gucciana (boy/girl twins)
LaTayshanique

ellebud 07-24-2012 04:22 PM

Slightly off but a friend of mine named her dog Bone quisha.

And lest some of you accuse her of racism or me of repeating something racist: Friend is African American so she said she could get away with it.

Oh...dog's call name? Rosie.

dekeguy 07-24-2012 04:55 PM

My brother and his wife are expecting their first in November. They remembered a list of names I proposed some time back and asked me to send them a copy. I'm not sure they remembered the context of my list, but here goes:

For a girl: Euthanasia
Mierda
Basura
Pneumonia

For twin girls: Conception and Contraception

For a boy: Scrotum
Merde
Bris
Gangrene

For twin boys: Oral and Anal

Somehow I suspect that they will choose something else.

IrishLake 07-24-2012 09:26 PM

dekeguy, lol. I would not be surprised if those were actual baby names somewhere.

We have friends who have a Cadence. She is aka Cady. Meh... not my favorite name.

We absolutely loved the name Ayla/Isla. It sounded horrible with our last name though. Just didn't flow right. If my husband has his way, and we have a 4th who happens to be a boy, he will be Tristan.

Concepción is not that uncommon for those with a Spanish or Tagalog speaking background. Though many of those ladies I know have gone by Connie, Concha, or a middle or Saints name.

I have a student this semester named Priscilla - I like it. Also Camille - thought about that for Cinderella.

Ahem.

I actually know a few girls named Kassi, one of which is my pledge sister. Although, Kassi is their given name. I guess I've never looked at it as an extremely unusual name. And at least it doesn't take a whole lot of brainpower to figure out how to pronounce it, unlike other misspelled names.

I don't think Mackenzie is horrible, but I do understand what you mean about never wanting to name your child that. I also would be quite opposed to the name.

And I would NEVER think of naming my child Cadence. I've never even heard the name before. Not thrilled with it.

I had read the bold, and I thought this was heading in a very different direction...

... I thought that, like those people who said they "test" the potential name with "Chief Justice" in front of it, you would test your potential names by imagining someone screaming them in bed.....

:o:p

And in thinking about this further... I suppose both of these names would fail that test.

I knew I liked you! The daughter I didn't carry to full term was named Priscilla, and I've also liked Camille/Camilla. One of the PNMs for whom I wrote a rec but went ChiO was called Cammy - it seems so friendly, but classic.

The first thing that comes to mind is Queen of the Desert. There's also the possibility of the nickname Prissy, or mean children calling her Pissy.

LOL! My sister's best friend in HS was Priscilla. Her initials were P.B. does anyone remember those P.B Max candy bars in the early 90's? They had a commercials "PB Max Don't mean..."with lots of things that P.B. didn't stand for like "portly ballerina" and would show a fat girl in a tutu. It was really a peanut butter square covered in chocolate. ANYWAY, we started calling Priscilla, "P.B. Means Prissy B*tch." I don't think she liked it, but we all thought it was HILARIOUS. Ahhhhhhh, memories. She was a prissy b*tch.

We had already planned on calling her Cissy as a preemptive strike.

And people who like Max or Maxwell - expect Maxi Pad nicknames.

Along with our version of the Dr./Justice test, that was the other test we had for kid's names -- the 7th grade test.

ellebud 07-25-2012 04:45 PM

The funny thing about the name Max..when I was a child it was a grandpa name. When my son was born Max and Maxwell was a trendy happening name. (Maxwell Schwartz for example..). Nowadays, in these parts half the dogs are named Buddy or Max.

Husband's brother's wife WAS nicknamed (by her mother) Prissy. And no, her name wasn't Priscilla or anything like that. Her mother just liked it....Prissy that is...as opposed to (swear) her father's nickname for her...Muffy...from Muffin. Again...no relationship to the real name.

He was very agreeable about the boys' names but it took forever to name the girls! I swear that we will have at least one more girl, though, and I know what I want to name her even though he doesn't care for the name because his hippie cousin suggested it. She will be:

CHESSA

Daughter #2 is Francesca. My mom and sister-in-law started calling her Chessa almost after she was born. As she's gotten older it's been shorten to Ches. Her friends at school sometimes call her Fran or Frannie (which I can't stand) and I asked her why she doesn't correct them and suggest Chessa or Ches. She said no, only family members can call me that.

carnation 07-26-2012 07:58 AM

I posted that 10 years ago and we have had so many adoptions fall through at the last minute that we can't even count them. Foster family gets the kids back even though they signed off on them, birthmother gets the kids back even though the first judge said no, kids are put into permanent foster care, you name it. The age range what we would accept has risen greatly now and it finally looks like something may happen for us this year.

Sometimes older children do want their name changed to start a whole new life. I know what one of my suggestions would be.

We always had interesting names where I trained, but my husband and his friend Cliff tried to get every mother to name their babies after them, whether they were boys or girls. Cliff's answer for a girl was ShaCliffa. SMH, luckily none of the women took the bait. Stephen swears someone named their daughter Stephanie after him. He does have a big ego.

Friends of mine adopted a daughter from foster care after fostering her for 3 years. She's 12 and one of her requests for things she wanted to do after her adoption was final was to change her name. Her birth parents were horribly abusive and they still live in the area. Not only does she want a new name so she can have a fresh start of sorts, but she doesn't want them to try and locate her (which would be easy as her birth name is very unique and it's not hard to figure out her adoptive parents last name and look her up.)

Pirouette 09-09-2012 02:51 PM

Also bumping cause my husband and I have decided to try for baby #2 soon!

As a college instructor, I have seen my share of names. Each year, I scan my freshman class lists for interesting/classic/unusual names.

A name that CONSTANTLY comes up is Tiffany, even after 7 years. What has changed, though, is the spelling.

I am (for good or bad) a purist when it comes to names, so tweaks/clever spellings/phonetic spellings horrify me. But--to each his own!

Here are some of the spellings of Tiffany I have seen--and continue to see:

Tiffany (the classic) Tifany
Tiffanee

IrishLake 09-09-2012 03:25 PM

My good friend is pregnant with her 4th. They don't know babys gender yet, but it's name is Brady no matter what. I don't think I care for that.
