So Excited!!! My friends Sally, Debby and Carrie are currently tied for 3rd with the Austrians with 6 races under their belts and 4 more to go! Keep your fingers crossed!!!

Word is that the conditions are dicey - very little wind with huge current so they sometimes feel they are going backwards, all it takes is making the wrong choice as to which side to go up and the entire fleet can get inverted - In the first race they went from 2nd at the 3rd mark to 14th by the finish.

AND YES that relay was so exciting!! My husband and I whooped so loud when they won that it scared my dogs to death!!!

I read this morning that her condition has improved, but I'm sure the rest of the country will still be praying for her and for her family. :(

We're six hours behind the East Coast, so it's hard as hell not to read the updates or pay attention to the tickers on the sports channels. Hell, we were watching the LLWS West Regionals and we knew about the 4x100 win 4 hours before it was aired here.

Putting all that political crap aside, I'm very proud of China and her people. They've been very supportive of athletes of all nations, not just their own, they should be commended for that.

Those girls are NOT 16. Hell no. I wouldn't be surprised if come 2012, those same girls appear again but with their ages modified.
Seriously. The age thing sucks but you can't prove their real ages if the government controls every aspect of their training.

Even my husband, who hates watching women's gymnastics said, "I don't for one second believe that these girls are 16. Not possible."

Total BS if you ask me...but hey, China, go ahead and falsify your stuff...

For any gymnasts who don't medal, they can go and get jobs in Cirque du Soleil afterwards. :)

Speaking of Cirque du Soleil, does anyone know when/if rhythmic gymnastics will be shown on NBC? Sadly since I moved I don't have cable and I am trying to avoid buying it because I'm so broke.

Or will it be available online?

I guess I can go search this out myself. I'm just worried because it's a "less popular" sport but one I really enjoy watching.

Looks like it will happen very early Friday morning, US time. http://www.nbcolympics.com/rhythmicg...cs/index.html# (ETA - sorry, those are just the qualifying rounds. The finals are Saturday morning - and I'm sure that's the part that will be televised, at least in bits http://www.nbcolympics.com/rhythmicg...les/index.html)

I don't know if it will be on NBC or not, but I am pretty sure they usually show at least little bits of it. I only had cable for a couple of years, I don't believe I've ever had it during the summer olympics and I know I've watched rythmic gymnastics many times.

And the US mens' gymnastics team just won bronze!!!

Those boys did a really amazing job, to come in and medal after having lost the Hamm twins and keep their composure even with all the heavy hitters around was just awesome. I was so proud watching them:)

I think I had heard that this was the first time competing in the Olympics for all of these guys. I thought it was really impressive how well they did under the pressure...being consistent and sticking the landings.

Yeah, this was the first time competing in the Olympics for all of them -the maturity they showed was, like you said, impressive.

I'm soo proud of them for getting bronze.. i was a little worried while they were on pommel horse because it looked like the nerves were getting to them but they def. rocked it out which is pretty awesome of them since it's their first olympics.. hopefully the women's team can follow suit.

***btw last i checked (about 2 a.m.) the U.S. was leading the medal count!!!

Yup! We're at 21 right now, one up on China who's at 20.

Cute little singer during the opening events mimed the song.

Not surprised. Modern Chinese are really obsessed with "projecting the right image" and this includes looks. Lookism is RAMPANT there. My mom told me that she read a story about a petite, yet slightly chubby girl being rejected for a job because of her height and weight. I think the position was PR-related. Even normal people, not from mainland China are criticized for their looks. My mom is constantly bugging me to get rid of some freckling on my face (acne scars from when I was a teen)! If it doesn't bother me, why should she care? And my mom isn't even from mainland China.
